Book Synopsis The Miniatures and Meters of the Old English Genesis, MS Junius 11 by : Seiichi Suzuki
Download or read book The Miniatures and Meters of the Old English Genesis, MS Junius 11 written by Seiichi Suzuki and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old English Genesis is the sole illustrated Anglo-Saxon poem. In full appreciation of this unique concurrent execution of visualization and versification in a single manuscript, this multidisciplinary work explores the pictorial (Vol. 1) and the metrical (Vol. 2) organization from both synchronic–structural and diachronic–comparative perspectives. Among the most significant findings of each volume are: The first twenty-two images in the Old English Genesis originated on the whole from the Touronian Bibles; and the underlying classical Old English and Old Saxon meters were interactively reshaped through mutual adaptation and recomposition aimed at their firm integration into a synthesized Old English Genesis. While each part is solidly embedded in the respective scholarly tradition and pursues its own disciplinary concerns and problematics, vigorous formal and cognitive reasoning and theorizing run commonly through both. By way of mutual corroboration and integration, the twin volumes eventually converge on the hypothesis that the earliest portion of the extant Old English Genesis (lines 1–966) derived from the corresponding episodes of an illustrated Touronian Old Saxon Genesis in both pictorial and metrical terms.

Book Synopsis Medieval Historical Writing by : Jennifer Jahner
Download or read book Medieval Historical Writing written by Jennifer Jahner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History writing in the Middle Ages did not belong to any particular genre, language or class of texts. Its remit was wide, embracing the events of antiquity; the deeds of saints, rulers and abbots; archival practices; and contemporary reportage. This volume addresses the challenges presented by medieval historiography by using the diverse methodologies of medieval studies: legal and literary history, art history, religious studies, codicology, the history of the emotions, gender studies and critical race theory. Spanning one thousand years of historiography in England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, the essays map historical thinking across literary genres and expose the rich veins of national mythmaking tapped into by medieval writers. Additionally, they attend to the ways in which medieval histories crossed linguistic and geographical borders. Together, they trace multiple temporalities and productive anachronisms that fuelled some of the most innovative medieval writing.

Book Synopsis Linguistic Emotivity by : Senko K. Maynard
Download or read book Linguistic Emotivity written by Senko K. Maynard and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguistic Emotivity explores expressive and emotive meanings in Japanese from the perspective of the Place of Negotiation theory. The Place of Negotiation theory provides a framework for understanding how linguistic signs function in the place of communication (in cognitive, emotive, and interactional places). The theory finds the indexicality of a sign fundamental and views meanings as being negotiated among interactants who share not only information but, more significantly, feelings. Using analytical tools recognized in conversation and discourse analyses, the book analyzes emotive topics (vocatives, emotive nominals, quotative topics, etc.) and emotive comments (da and ja-nai, interrogatives, stylistic shifts, etc.) in contemporary Japanese discourse. It argues for the importance of emotivity in Japanese, in the context of the Japanese culture of pathos. Linguistic Emotivity challenges the traditional view of language that privileges logos, form, information, and abstraction, and instead, it proposes a philosophical shift toward pathos, expression, emotion, and linguistic event/action.

Book Synopsis The Psalms Commentary of Gilbert of Poitiers by : Theresa Gross-Diaz
Download or read book The Psalms Commentary of Gilbert of Poitiers written by Theresa Gross-Diaz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1996 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes available to scholars the unpublished proto-scholastic "Commentary on the Psalms," composed by one of the outstanding figures of the early twelfth century, Gilbert of Poiters (Gilbert Porreta). The commentary had its origins in the atmosphere of experimentation which characterized the schools of Laon, Chartres and Paris in the first decades of the century. Its unique "mise en page," its methodology and its connection to other texts - especially glossed classical texts, the "Glossa ordinaria" and the writings of Peter Lombard - are explored. Gilbert's "Commentary" is a text critical for the understanding of the development of the discipline of theology in the twelfth century schools.

Book Synopsis Self-assessment Based Mini-after Action Review (SAMAAR) Methodology by : Angelo Mirabella
Download or read book Self-assessment Based Mini-after Action Review (SAMAAR) Methodology written by Angelo Mirabella and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research was conducted as a pilot effort in proparation for anticipated future research applications of the self assessment based mini-AAR (SAMAAR) approach. The approach combines the Army's Socratic based after action review with the Delphi technique. Delphi elicits independent judgments from experts before bringing them together to solve problems as a group. In the SAMAAR approach, trainees, at the end of an excerise day or shift fill out rating forms to assess the units training progress and then convine with their completed forms to participate in a mini-AAR. The mini-AAR is preliminary training review carried out by small groups prior to an end of exercise after action review. SAMAAR was developmentally applied to Division Artillery Staff training at Fort Hood. The approach was judged by training participants to be a feasible and timely way to support training feedback."--DTIC.
