Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From murder and matchstick men to all-consuming fires, painted women, and Great Lakes disasters--and the wide-eyed public who could not help but gawk at it all--"Milwaukee Mayhem" uncovers the little-remembered and rarely told history of the underbelly of a Midwestern metropolis. "Milwaukee Mayhem" offers a new perspective on Milwaukee's early years, forgoing the major historical signposts found in traditional histories and focusing instead on the strange and brutal tales of mystery, vice, murder, and disaster that were born of the city's transformation from lakeside settlement to American metropolis. Author Matthew J. Prigge presents these stories as they were recounted to the public in the newspapers of the era, using the vivid and often grim language of the times to create an engaging and occasionally chilling narrative of a forgotten Milwaukee. Through his thoughtful introduction, Prigge gives the work context, eschewing assumptions about "simpler times" and highlighting the mayhem that the growth and rise of a city can bring about. These stories are the orphans of Milwaukee's history, too unusual to register in broad historic narratives, too strange to qualify as nostalgia, but nevertheless essential to our understanding of this American city.

Book excerpt: Jeffrey Dahmer was one of the most fascinating, memorable, and gruesome serial killers in American history who took the lives of 17 young men and boys between 1978 and 1991. Once he was captured and arrested in his one-bedroom apartment in Wisconsin on the evening of July 22nd, 1991, the true nature of a quiet chocolate factory mixer was exposed, after which he was aptly named The Milwaukee Monster and The Milwaukee Cannibal. His MO included date rape, necrophilia, and cannibalism, which shocked the world and his family. While Jeff was always known as a loner with some strange hobbies, no-one could have guessed what was festering inside a sad and neglected mind, particularly after puberty. He had mastered the art of diffusing any suspicions about his behavior, using sarcasm and self-pity to earn the trust of almost everyone that he had ever encountered. He was especially good at getting strangers to come home with him, whether it was for business, pleasure, or both and enjoyed the thrill of hunting for the best looking guy he could find for the purpose of "keeping them with me for as long as possible". This meant boiling, bleaching, and painting their skulls, which he was planning to turn into a shrine to help him "feel more at home", and preserving their hands, bones, and genitals. He also kept a stash of Polaroids in his bedroom, which depicted the sickening dismemberment process of several victims and served the purpose of pornography for him. At first glance, his apartment looked quite normal, complete with plants, a tropical fish tank, framed art, and a sofa to relax on, even though it had a strange smell. But officers soon realized that this was nothing more than a façade, discovering a freshly severed head as they plucked open his fridge, complete with a drip-tray. Detectives described the crime scene as the dismantling of a horror museum, where they carried out boxes, drawers, a refrigerator, a freezer, and barrels filled with human remains, some fresh, some mummified, and some neatly wrapped for later consumption. In this book we discover just what the man who got a 900+ year prison sentence got up to in his spare time, and what shaped him as a person. This series is written in the classic cut-and-dry factual narrative that True Crime fans enjoy, leaving out distractions, opinions, and unnecessary embellishments. Were there any warning signs of his behavior? How did he get away with murder for 13 years? How were his victim's bodies never discovered?Which victims did he cannibalize, and why?Why necrophilia? What was his motive? Let's investigate and find out!

Book excerpt: Some evils are meant to belong to the land of lore: where horrible monsters exist only to bewitch and unsettle the mind. But there are real horrors in this world, and the thing of nightmares can often exist right outside your door. Unfortunately, the only way to extinguish this kind of darkness, is to examine it in the light. For the name Jeffrey Dahmer still exists in the lexicon of American history as an example of pure evil and the proof that monsters truly do exist. Having murdered and dismembered seventeen men and boys between 1978 and 1991, the legacy of the cannibal next door still fascinates many who seek to understand where such brutality could come from, and how it managed to operate unchecked for so long. In Jeffrey Dahmer: The Milwaukee Cannibal, history takes a discerning eye to the life and behaviors of one of the world's most infamous serial killers. Giving consideration to Jeffrey's upbringing as well as his legacy, this biography offers new ways to consider and condemn the man inside the monster.

Book excerpt: Jeffrey Dahmer Milwaukee Monster: The Shocking True Story of Serial Killer Jeffrey Dahmer Known as the Milwaukee Monster and the Milwaukee Cannibal, Jeffrey Dahmer was one of the most well-known and prolific serial killers in history. Dahmer terrorized the Wisconsin city for thirteen years murdering seventeen known victims from 1978 until his capture in 1991. The name Jeffrey Dahmer is synonymous with the phrase serial killer and stands out due to his victim profile, M.O., and the excessively violent and bloody nature of his crimes. The homosexual Dahmer was different in the sense that all of his victims were men compared to the vast majority of male serial killers who tend to be heterosexual with female victims. This book charts the story of these brutal murders, and of a serial killer who personifies pure evil.

Book excerpt: ‘Every sentence is a delight in this taut and thrilling debut by Willa Richards.’ Elizabeth Wetmore, author of Valentine ‘Richards has flipped the usual narrative, centring not on the crime itself but on the loss that ripples from it.’ New York Times Book Review A remarkable debut novel for fans of Mary Gaitskill and Gillian Flynn about two sisters – one who disappears and the other who is left to pick up the pieces. In the summer of 1991, teen Dee McBride vanished in the city of Milwaukee. It was the summer the Journal Sentinel dubbed ‘the deadliest . . . in the history of Milwaukee.’ Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer’s heinous crimes dominated the headlines and the disappearance of one girl was easily overlooked. 2019, nearly thirty years later, Dee's sister, Peg, is still haunted by her disappearance. Desperate to find out what happened to her, the family hire a psychic and Peg is plunged back into the past. But Peg’s hazy recollections are far from easy to interpret and digging deep into her memory raises terrifying questions. How much trust can we place in our own recollections? How often are our memories altered by the very act of speaking them aloud? And what does it mean to bear witness in a world where even our own stories about what happened are inherently suspect? A heartbreaking page-turner, Willa C. Richards’ debut novel is the story of a broken family looking for answers in the face of the unknown.

Book excerpt: From the author of Lost Milwaukee comes an exploration of the criminal side of the Cream City. Milwaukee saw its share of violence as it transformed from frontier village to modern metropolis. The city was barely established when an argument over a bridge linking east and west was nearly settled with cannon fire. A local developer killed his estranged wife, severed her head, and burned it in the furnace of the apartment building he built. A wronged woman murdered her lover on a busy downtown street and was found innocent by a sympathetic jury. Another woman lethally poisoned her family and laughed about it in the press. From a robbery in which the bandits got away by stealing a streetcar to the attempted assassination of President Theodore Roosevelt, local historian Carl Swanson uncovers dramatic true stories of villainy and murder from Milwaukee's long-forgotten past.
