Book excerpt: First published in 1907, the publication of these Middle-English texts aimed to make the dramatic Harrowing of Hell and Gospel of Nicodemus easily accessible to students of English literature. Edited together using all known manuscripts, the volume includes the texts of the Harrowing of Hell and the Gospel of Nicodemus along with an extensive scholarly introduction on both texts. The Digby, Harley and Auchinleck manuscripts of the Harrowing are printed in three parallel columns to allow for fuller, comparative understanding, at once succinct and comprehensive. The Gospel is reproduced similarly with its Galba, Harley and Sion manuscripts along with an additional manuscript. Explanatory notes and glosses have been omitted owing to inclusion in a separate publication.

Book excerpt: Apart from Nicholas Love's 'Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ', the pseudo-Bonaventuran 'Meditationes Vitae Christi' was the basis for a number of other Middle English texts in verse and prose. The 'Liber Aureus and Gospel of Nicodemus', which survives in three manuscripts and a fragment, offers a distinctive contribution to the tradition that followed in the wake of the Latin text and provides a significant counterpoint to Nicholas Love's version. Whereas Love adopts from the 'Meditationes Vitae Christi' most of its rhetorical strategies characteristic of Franciscan devotion, the compiler of the 'Liber Aureus and Gospel of Nicodemus' systematically and deliberately removes these features and produces a translation in a plain style. At the same time, the compiler adds to the narrative derived from the 'Meditationes Vitae Christi' passages from the gospels as well as legendary materials. The 'Liber Aureus and Gospel of Nicodemus' is a theologically eclectic text that reveals the influences of both Wycliffite thinking on the centrality of the gospels and orthodoxy. This is the first edition of the text, and includes an introduction, commentary, appendices of marginalia and related texts, and a glossary.

Book Synopsis Pepysian Meditations on the Passion of Christ by : Mayumi Taguchi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle English prose ‘Pepysian Meditations on the Passion of Christ’ (PMPC) survives uniquely in Cambridge, Magdalene College, MS Pepys 2125 and has not previously been published. It is one of several Middle English translations of the Passion sequence of the pseudo-Bonaventuran Latin ‘Meditationes Vitae Christi’ (MVC). This part of the MVC circulated independently and in this form is known in modern scholarship as the ‘Meditationes de Passione Christi’ (MPC). The editors argue that although the Middle English version in Pepys 2125 followed the model of the MPC, it is probable that the translation derives directly from a recension of the MPC. Although the translator handles the original with a degree of freedom, the text is not indebted to other sources. The Introduction includes an extensive description of the manuscript which is a late medieval devotional miscellany, and a detailed account of the language of the PMPC. It also addresses the textual tradition out of which the PMPC grew and the work of the translator. The edited text is followed by a commentary, glossary and bibliography.

Book Synopsis Lay Readings of the Bible in Early Modern Europe by : Erminia Ardissino
Download or read book Lay Readings of the Bible in Early Modern Europe written by Erminia Ardissino and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this collection of essays is to bring together new comparative research studies on the place and role of the Bible in early modern Europe. It focuses on lay readings of the Bible, interrogating established historical, social, and confessional paradigms. It highlights the ongoing process of negotiation between the faithful congregation and ecclesiastical institutions, in both Protestant and Catholic countries. It shows how, even in the latter, where biblical translations were eventually forbidden, the laity drew upon the Bible as a source of ethical, cultural, and spiritual inspiration, contributing to the evolution of central aspects of modernity. Interpreting the Bible could indeed be a means of feeding critical perspectives and independent thought and behavior. Contributors: Erminia Ardissino, Xavier Bisaro, Élise Boillet, Gordon Campbell, Jean-Pierre Cavaillé, Sabrina Corbellini, François Dupuigrenet Desroussilles, Max Engammare, Wim François, Ignacio J. García Pinilla, Stefano Gattei, Margriet Hoogvliet, Tadhg Ó hAnnracháin, and Concetta Pennuto.

Book Synopsis Caxton's Golden Legend by : Jacobus (de Voragine)
Download or read book Caxton's Golden Legend written by Jacobus (de Voragine) and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is volume I of the first scholarly edition of the Golden Legend, the largest and most elaborate production of the first printer in English, William Caxton. It is an English translation of Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda aurea (ca. 1267), a collection of legends for the feasts of saints (the Sanctorale) and other major days of the liturgical year (the Temporale). The Legenda aurea was one of the most popular and influential books in the later medieval Western world; it circulated widely, and was repeatedly translated into many vernacular languages. This volume reproduces Caxton's original text of the Temporale with modern punctuation and capitalization, notes on content, syntax and lexis, a detailed glossary, and an index of proper names. Caxton's complex combination of sources is given particular attention: the principal one was a little-known reworking of the French translation made by Jean de Vignay, but he also used the Latin original and a previous English translation, the Gilte Legende, and made some personal additions. The Introduction considers the structure of the entire book that Caxton created, but focuses on the Temporale and the set of Old Testament legends that will follow in volume 2. It discusses their sources and language, highlighting the differences between the first two volumes and the notable number of new words and senses. It also gives a detailed bibliographic account of this printing in its historical context and descriptions of all surviving copies.
