Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican Papers The object of these publications is to draw the attention of the mercantile and industrial classes in the United States, to the national importance of the Mexican question; and to place before them information respecting Mexico, her peo ple and her institutions, with the view of correcting public opinion on some highly important points, which, in my judg ment, are entirely ignored, or thoroughly misconceived. These subjects will be explained with reference to the vital interests the American people have in Mexico, not omitting to touch, suggestively, upon those intimate relations which, sooner or later, must be established between the two republics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers Relating to Mexico At present, however, we are waiting for the beginning of the evacuation. When that beginning shall have come, the government will cheerfully hear sug gestions from any quarter calculated to reassure the restoration of tranquillity, peace, and constitutional domestic government in Mexico; but until we shall be able to refer to such a beginning any proceedings towards negotiation would only tend to confound public Opinion in the United States, and to render the situation of Mexico more complicated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican American: A Paper Prepared for the U. S. Commission on Civil Rights, 1968 The enactment of various items of civil rights legis lation at the Federal and State levels and the introduction of new programs designed to reduce poverty and inequality have been accompanied by growing frustration on the part of many Mexican Americans, who can perceive little or no improvement in the general status of the community. A survey conducted in l96h among unemployed Mexican Americans in Los Angeles revealed that close to 90 percent had noticed no results whatsoever from civil rights or Fair Employment Practices Commission (fepc) legislation anywhere. This is understandable: a special census of East Los Angeles, which is about percent Mexican American, showed that between 1960 and 1965 real income in the area dropped, home ownership declined, and housing deteriorated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Austin Papers, Vol. 3: October, 1834-January, 1837 While waiting for the passage of this law Austin busied himself with the affairs of Texas. He published his Exposicio'n dl dlico sobre los Asuntos de Tejas, which was designed to convince the authorities of the continued loyalty of Texas, and to some extent had that effect; and he developed a plan for the opening of a government road through Texas to Chihuahua. This road had for its immediate object the diversion of the Santa f -north Mexican trade from St. Louis and Independence, Mis souri, to Texas; and for its ultimate object it probably had in view the establishment of indissoluble economic ties between Texas and the North Mexican States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexican and Central American Antiquities, Calendar Systems, and History: Twenty-Four Papers For a number of years English - speaking students of aboriginal American history have given much attention to the archeology and especially to the glyphic writing of the semicivilized peoples of middle America. Researches relating to the latter subject are of exceptional importance, not-only because of their bearing on native history, but on account of their application to the problems of the origin and development of writing in general. Investigations regard ing the American glyphic system have been greatly stimulated in recent years by kindred researches in various parts of the world, and more especially by the remarkable results achieved by Egyptologists, who, through the discovery of the Rosetta stone, have been able to present to the world historic treasures of the greatest value. Although there is no prospect that an American Rosetta stone will be found, since only one well-advanced system of writing had developed in the New World, the present investigations alongthis line are well worth the attention of the American Government. The position of the Atlas seems to be taken from a hasty glance at the letter of our Secretar rather than from mature reflection on its principles and a care 111 attention to the facts which it has set forth as true; or, perhaps, from a habit of reliance on the well known caution, correctness, and force of Mr. Webster's state ments and conclusions, when made by him as his own, and when personally liable before the tribunal of high public senti ment for whatever may prove unjust or inconclusive. The true question is not whether Mr. Webster's letter is written with as much eloquence as a state-paper will ordinarily allow, for in this respect Mr. Webster could hardly fail to be himself; but, whether talent and force of manner shall take the place, in the judgment of the country, of truth and justice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-1930s to the late 1950s, Mexican cinema became the most successful Latin American cinema and the leading Spanish-language film industry in the world. Many Cine de Oro (Golden Age cinema) films adhered to the dominant Hollywood model, but a small yet formidable filmmaking faction rejected Hollywood’s paradigm outright. Directors Fernando de Fuentes, Emilio Fernández, Luis Buñuel, Juan Bustillo Oro, Adolfo Best Maugard, and Julio Bracho sought to create a unique national cinema that, through the stories it told and the ways it told them, was wholly Mexican. The Classical Mexican Cinema traces the emergence and evolution of this Mexican cinematic aesthetic, a distinctive film form designed to express lo mexicano. Charles Ramírez Berg begins by locating the classical style’s pre-cinematic roots in the work of popular Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada at the turn of the twentieth century. He also looks at the dawning of Mexican classicism in the poetics of Enrique Rosas’ El Automóvil Gris, the crowning achievement of Mexico’s silent filmmaking era and the film that set the stage for the Golden Age films. Berg then analyzes mature examples of classical Mexican filmmaking by the predominant Golden Age auteurs of three successive decades. Drawing on neoformalism and neoauteurism within a cultural studies framework, he brilliantly reveals how the poetics of Classical Mexican Cinema deviated from the formal norms of the Golden Age to express a uniquely Mexican sensibility thematically, stylistically, and ideologically.
