Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely revised, updated, and expanded edition has been neces sitated by the many important newer discoveries that have been made since the publication of the first edition. That volume contained almost 2000 references from the 1600s to 1953. Since then and after an extensive search, I have accumulated some 3800 additional titles from the world's literature on Paramecium. After certain titles that largely represented abstracts and preliminary reports that were followed by full research papers were eliminated, approximately 4400 full titles from the 1600s to the present were selected for inclusion in this edition. Most of the titles in the Bibliography are the more recent ones beginning with 1953. I consider the Bibliography an important part of the book: A good title of a paper in a journal is a minature abstract of its contents. Thus, the reader who may be interested in obtaining additional information not found in the book may refer directly to the original source. A cursory examination of the Bibliography will reveal that parame cium research has extended into all branches of biology, including bio chemistry and biophysics. Like other areas of science, paramecium research has become highly specialized and fragmented. I have attempted to organize and present the basic information in one book. Because of space limitations, some items may have been dealt with briefly. It is in such instances that the Bibliography will be found to be invaluable.

The goal of this book is to inspire not only biomedical research scientists and university students, but also a variety of patients who suffer from PAK-dependent diseases and clinical doctors who try to cure or delay these PAK-dependent diseases. This book consists of 9 chapters which deal with different aspects of this kinase. These chapters are written by more than two dozen world-leading PAK experts. Each of these will provide updated biomedical information as well as future insight to a wide range of readers who are interested in this unique kinase and both its pathological and physiological roles as well as its functional evolution from its ancestral origins. This publication will be the very first book ever published solely focused on PAK family kinases Each chapter deals with the latest progress in PAK research written by a leading PAK expert with his or her own ideas and insight Each chapter of this book has been written in such a way that clinical doctors who seek the effective cure of these formidable diseases, in addition to research scientists and biomedical students will value this book This book describes in detail a number of PAK blockers which would be potentially useful for the therapy of these PAK-dependent diseases, and some of them are indeed available on the market inexpensively, without any side effect

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the long-term proliferation of cells is a seminal one. It has always been a hot subject in biology, a source of far-reaching hypotheses, even more so now when explanations for the mechanisms of cell prolifera tive mortality or immortality seem within our reach. A question which is still debated is whether an infinite division potential can be a normal trait or is always the result of modifications leading to abnormal cell growth and escape from homeostasis. In general, investigators have been advocates of one of the two extremes, universal limited or unlim ited normal proliferative potential. Since the long-term proliferative potential of cells concerns regulation of development, regeneration of tissues, and homeostatic control of cell growth, in brief survival of living organisms, and since the regulation of these processes is so different along the evolutionary scale, it is not surpris ing that there does not seem to be any universal trait. The question of whether cells are endowed with finite or infinite prolifera tive phenotypes has to be seen using the perspective of comparative biology.

Book excerpt: Many "people believe that humanity's survival is threatened by catastrophic overpopulation. [The author believes that] nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the greatest threat to modern society--in North America, Japan, and Europe--is a global decline in birth rates combined with a massive tidal wave of retirees that will overwhelm our economies and social welfare systems. ... However, bioscience is on the verge of providing a solution: groundbreaking life-extension research could help us be productive and self-sufficient for much longer, and live healthily to 100 years and beyond. Alzheimer's, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, liver fibrosis, arthritis, even wrinkles, may soon be problems of the past"--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Molecular Biology of Ciliated Protozoa covers topics that are unique to ciliates, including major molecular progress, genetics, life history, and development of ciliates. Organized into 11 chapters, it focuses on the importance of ciliated protozoa as experimental organisms. The introductory chapter traces the ups and downs of ciliate biology, emphasizing the prominent role of the ciliates in early studies of cell structure, reproduction, and heredity. The book goes on to discuss ciliate genetics and conjugation, providing the basic biological framework for molecular studies of ciliate. Chapters 4 and 5 cover the nuclear DNA content, sequence, and arrangement of holotrichous and hypotrich ciliates. Chapters 6 to 9 examine the characterization of chromosomal telomeres, ribosomal gene amplification, and chromatin and histone structure using ciliated protozoa as experimental organisms. The final two chapters describe the mating mechanism of two ciliates, Blepharisma japonicum and Euplotes raikovi, and the function of surface antigens of Paramecium ciliate. The book is intended for students and investigators who want to learn more about the ciliated protozoa, particularly, in areas that cover fundamental features of eukaryotic biology.

Book excerpt: The study of microglial cells has recently gained importance for those researching degeneration and regeneration. Microglia in the regenerating and degenerating CNS supports the assertion that understanding microglial biology could perhaps be pivotal for unraveling the pathogenetic mechanisms that underlie Alzheimer's disease, In addition, microglia are also critical for understanding the sequelae of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, and for the important post-traumatic repair processes. This book gives an up to date account of the role of microglia in degeneration and regeneration of the nervous system and reviews their cell function and physiology.

Book excerpt: The third edition of The Ciliated Protozoa continues the innovative approach of the previous two editions, thoroughly documenting the progress in our understanding of the evolutionary diversification of these widely distributed eukaryotic microorganisms. The Glossary is considerably revised and expanded, serving as an illustrated ‘subject index’ of more than 700 terms. An introduction to the phylum is followed by chapters on the 11 classes. Each class chapter contains 7 sections: taxonomic structure life history and ecology somatic structures oral structures division and morphogenesis nuclei, sexuality, and life cycle other features The book includes new data on the ultrastructure of the somatic cortex of each class, molecular phylogenetics, ecology, and on other important aspects of ciliate biology. These new data are used, along with a novel conceptual approach, to rationalize a new system of classification for the phylum, presented in a major chapter on The Ciliate Taxa. The book includes an up-to-date bibliography of approximately 3,000 citations to both the ‘classical’ and recent literature, and both a Subject Index and a Systematic Index. This unique and timely book will serve as a comprehensive and authoritative reference work for students, teachers, and researchers who have an interest in the protozoa, and particularly the ciliates. As an additional feature, all figures are available electronically for free viewing on the book's homepage at www.springer.com/978-1-4020-8238-2, under Additional Information.

Book excerpt: Reviews our current understanding of the role of protein oxidation in aging and age-related diseases Protein oxidation is at the core of the aging process. Setting forth a variety of new methods and approaches, this book helps researchers conveniently by exploring the aging process and developing more effective therapies to prevent or treat age-related diseases. There have been many studies dedicated to the relationship between protein oxidation and age-related pathology; now it is possible for researchers and readers to learn new techniques as utilizing protein oxidation products as biomarkers for aging. Protein Oxidation and Aging begins with a description of the tremendous variety of protein oxidation products. Furthermore, it covers: Major aspects of the protein oxidation process Cellular mechanisms for managing oxidized proteins Role of protein oxidation in aging Influence of genetic and environmental factors on protein oxidation Measuring protein oxidation in the aging process Protein oxidation in age-related diseases References at the end of each chapter serve as a gateway to the growing body of original research studies and reviews in the field.
