Welcome to the Metaverse workplace, a virtual world that acts as the primary place of business for an organization and where employees report to work as digital avatars. Though much has been theorized about this virtual realm, there is now proof that this work model can optimize your organization’s potential. In this book, Jason Gesing, a pioneer in leading and growing global organizations within virtual work environments, provides a comprehensive framework and actionable strategies so you can leverage this virtual terrain. Between topical research, case studies of organizations “going meta,” and the author’s own decade of experience in a Metaverse workplace, this book addresses the twelve focal points that should be at the top of any business leader's mind as they consider a Metaverse work model—from productivity and profitability to social equality and corporate well-being. This book is a call for business leaders to embrace the new digital revolution that will expand your work potential beyond anything you imagined possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Enron debacle to the Martha Stewart scandal, trust in business practices and in corporate leaders has been seriously jeopardized, hitting an all-time low. According to Matthew Gilbert in his latest book, The Workplace Revolution, the problem stems from a relentless work ethic, the tireless pursuit of profit, and the conflict between business values and human values. Today more than ever, people are waking up to the fact that they are not getting back what they give to their employers. While they are dedicating an inordinate amount of themselves to their work, their jobs offer little to meet their needs for community, self-expression, and service, and many have simply abandoned the possibility that self-serving, profit-driven companies can offer more than a paycheck. Gilbert assures us that the problem is not hopeless. In The Workplace Revolution, he provides both personal strategies and corporate methodologies for improving overall health in the workplace and restoring trust and goodwill between business leaders and their employees. With statistics and commentary from a wide range of sources and examples of companies such as Hewlett-Packard that are already balancing economic and human concerns, he demonstrates to worker and CEO alike that they can turn the experience of work into a spiritual, ideal-based, life-enhancing adventure for all concerned and still meet corporate goals. Revolutionary concepts for today's corporations and the health of their employees.

Book excerpt: Lerong Lu examines the biggest change in modern financial industry - the Fintech (financial technology) revolution - that denotes the close interaction between the financial services industry and latest information technologies such as big data, cloud computing, blockchain, and artificial intelligence. The three areas of banking institutions, online lending marketplaces, and money and payment systems are explored to assess how financial innovations affect the traditional financial industry, what kinds of regulatory challenges arise, and how global policymakers react to such challenges. With in-depth and international case studies on Fintech, including app-based banking services, mobile payments, P2P lending, and cryptocurrencies, the global Fintech hubs in six continents are assessed. The complex, dynamic, and multidimensional Fintech ecosystem is also investigated including its key players (such as regulatory strategy, regulatory sandbox, and RegTech) and Fintech corporations (including financial holding companies, Fintech unicorns, BigTech firms, and Metaverse platforms). Lu highlights the enormous benefits for financial institutions and their consumers and argues that Fintech contributes to a more equal, democratic, inclusive, and sustainable financial system. However, he also considers the risks and multiple legal, ethical, and regulatory challenges for policy-makers and financial authorities that Fintech has posed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The metaverse seems to be on everybody’s lips – and yet, very few people can actually explain what it means or why it is important. This book aims to fill the gap from an interdisciplinary perspective informed by law and media and communications studies. Going beyond the optimism emanating from technology companies and venture capitalists, the authors critically evaluate the antecedents and the building blocks of the metaverse, the design and regulatory challenges that need to be solved, and commercial opportunities that are yet to be fully realised. While the metaverse is poised to open new possibilities and perspectives, it will also be a dangerous place – one ripe with threats ranging from disinformation to intellectual property theft to sexual harassment. Hence, the book offers a useful guide to the legal and political governance issues ahead while also contextualising them within the broader domain of governance and regulation of digital technologies.

The Metaverse, what some describe as the future of the Internet, is likely to fuel even further disruption in journalism. Digital platforms and journalism enterprises are already investing substantial resources into the Metaverse or its likely components of augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence.. Although research shows most of the public has little knowledge of the Metaverse, many are keenly interested in what it or its components may bring. Gartner (2022) predicts that a quarter of the public will spend at least one hour per day in the Metaverse by 2026. Journalism may be an important part of this future. This book will provide a critical examination of the implications of the Metaverse for the continuing transformation of journalism in the digital age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays highlights the sometimes absurd outcomes which an unjustified overprotection of intellectual property (IP) may lead to. It collects and comments on a series of IP disputes which have taken the notion of IP protection to extremes. From individuals being sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars for sharing a playlist, to sports spectators being arrested for wearing the 'wrong' dresses, passing through granting patents for inventions obtained by misappropriating traditional knowledge, and trademark protection of merely descriptive signs, this book brings together a broad range of examples from across the IP spectrum where protection and enforcement have been used or threatened on unreasonable and/or untenable grounds. The aim of the book is to criticise these excesses precisely because they harm IP; and because they contribute to creating an environment where more and more people are led to 'hate' IP, and view it as a protectionist regime which discourages creativity in innovation and ends up safeguarding the owners of monopolistic rights which restrict trade, competition and people's freedom. This is not, therefore, a book against IP, it is instead a call for change and an attempt to 'save' IP through critiquing its excesses and preventing such a fascinating area of law from continuing to be an easy target for criticism. The book includes a foreword by Jason Mazzone, Albert E Jenner Jr Professor of Law at the University of Illinois, USA.

Book excerpt: Recently there has been a tremendous paradigm shift in diversifying the workforce at both national and international levels. Having roots in the globalization trend that began in the 20th century, the boundaries of many states have been opened to foreign workers in the international business environment. Furthermore, depending on the dynamics of civilized societies around the world, employees from different ethnicities, races, and genders are offered more job positions day after day with the joint contributions of public and private enterprises. However, there is still a need to improve workplace diversity and equity, even if there have been promising developments. Role of Human Resources for Inclusive Leadership, Workplace Diversity, and Equity in Organizations brings together the emerging topics of inclusive leadership, diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizations in the digital transformation context. The book also offers theoretical infrastructure and the latest empirical research findings on inclusive leadership, diversity, equity, and digital transformation. Covering key topics such as social entrepreneurship, employee motivation, and diverse organizations, this premier reference source is ideal for managers, entrepreneurs, business owners, policymakers, researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners, instructors, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-renowned economist Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, explains that we have an opportunity to shape the fourth industrial revolution, which will fundamentally alter how we live and work. Schwab argues that this revolution is different in scale, scope and complexity from any that have come before. Characterized by a range of new technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, the developments are affecting all disciplines, economies, industries and governments, and even challenging ideas about what it means to be human. Artificial intelligence is already all around us, from supercomputers, drones and virtual assistants to 3D printing, DNA sequencing, smart thermostats, wearable sensors and microchips smaller than a grain of sand. But this is just the beginning: nanomaterials 200 times stronger than steel and a million times thinner than a strand of hair and the first transplant of a 3D printed liver are already in development. Imagine “smart factories” in which global systems of manufacturing are coordinated virtually, or implantable mobile phones made of biosynthetic materials. The fourth industrial revolution, says Schwab, is more significant, and its ramifications more profound, than in any prior period of human history. He outlines the key technologies driving this revolution and discusses the major impacts expected on government, business, civil society and individuals. Schwab also offers bold ideas on how to harness these changes and shape a better future—one in which technology empowers people rather than replaces them; progress serves society rather than disrupts it; and in which innovators respect moral and ethical boundaries rather than cross them. We all have the opportunity to contribute to developing new frameworks that advance progress.
