Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Message of Peace, and Other Christians Sermons The Song of the Angels was the first public preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Its advent had been announced privately to those who were elected to be its instrument, in dream and vision, in angelic salutation, in inspirations of the Holy Ghost. To Zacharias in the Temple, to Mary in the secret chamber, in the night watches to Joseph, in the joy of her unborn child to Elisabeth, the assurance of its approach had been given. It had been recognized and welcomed in words such as had never yet burst from the hearts of men, from human gladness, from human hope My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Peace My father has left a volume on Peace. Shortly before his death he corrected the final proofs. It is fitting so, for during his life he preached peace. In his 'Notes of Recent Exposition' in the Expository Times he wrote of the Copenhagen Conference, and quoted these words of Dr. Jowett: 'I was impressed with the grave necessity of demonstrating our will-to-peace as men demonstrated their will-to-war. ... Behind Governments and politicians, behind diplomatists and militarists, there is a great silent world of men and women yearning for peace. Delegates from every land spoke about it.... The people are not numb; they are only dumb. They do not lack heart, they are only in want of a voice. They cannot demonstrate their desires. They cannot speak so as to make Governments hear and heed. They need an organ of expression, and where can they find an organ except in the Church of the Living God? What is the Church for but to be a mouth for the dumb, an instrument to utter the silent yearnings of the purest and the best in every land?' But Dr. Hastings believed that a further duty is laid upon the Church. The people are not all seeking an 'organ of expression, ' for they are not all seeking peace. A fresh moral force to move them to the will-to-peace is needed. He hoped that preachers in all Churches would make Peace a message in the coming winter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Peace: A Collection of Essays on War and Peace Tnnnz has been, since the time of the gifted Erasmus, a great deal of eloquent writing on Peace; and the follow ing pages contain the best productions on the subject not only of past ages, but of our own. No theme has ever waited a purer or loftier inspiration and on no topic in the whole range of morals, theology, or, general literature, can there be found finer specimens of taste and eloquence. We have also culled from a wide as well as luxuriant field from the gardens of intellect and learning in both hemis pheres, from some of the best writers in the last three cen turica, from men of every faith, Protestant and Catholic, Orthodox and Unitarian, Episcopal, Baptist and Presbyte rian. The subject is itself a sort of Delos, whither the best spirits of every party, creed and clime gather to blend in sweet and hallowed sympathy; and these pages exhibit. A constellation of the peaceful pleiads pouring their mingled splendors on this common theme of religion, humanity and Christian patriotism. Many years later Maxine Hong Kingston wrote a Fourth Book of Peace, but it too was burned--in the catastrophic Berkeley-Oakland Hills fire of 1991, a fire that coincided with the death of her father. Now in this visionary and redemptive work, Kingston completes her interrupted labor, weaving fiction and memoir into a luminous meditation on war and peace, devastation and renewal.

With that inspiring challenge the Hebrew Christians Of the Olden time were urged to more patient endurance and more steadfast endeavor. They were encouraged to regard their little lives as the observed Of those unseen Observers, the saints and heroes who crowd the galleries of Hebrew history.
