Download or read book Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Cheats, and Devices written by Charles Siegel and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the earliest surviving English version of tales about Till Eulenspiegel, published in the mid-1500s and translated from a German text published in the 1510s, which was the first written version of oral tales that circulated in the 1400s. In the nineteenth century, when Till Eulenspiegel became a favorite subject of children's books, the tales were bowdlerized and the pranks were innocent. Eulenspiegel was often drawn wearing a jester's cap. In the original tales, Eulenspiegel is an opportunist who is always inventing schemes to avoid work and to cheat people out of their money. The humor can be crude, the character can be exasperating, and the pranks can be cruel-particularly when they are meant as revenge against those who resisted his schemes. Modern readers may well find many of the tales offensive, but they are a good example of the popular humor of Europe during the early Renaissance. The spelling and punctuation of the tales are modernized, so it is easy for contemporary readers to understand the text. They are accompanied by the original woodcut illustrations from a German edition of 1515. We are pleased to make this classic accessible to modern English-speaking readers for the first time.

Book excerpt: The welcome return of one of Michael Rosen's favourite books! Till Owlyglass (Till Eulenspiegel) is a boy who was special from the day he was baptised three times. But not in a good way. Not in a way his parents liked. He was always in trouble for his rudeness and practical jokes, and grew up to be the most outrageous trickster in Germany. Everyone told stories about him¿ and they still do five centuries later. In this wickedly funny book, Michael Rosen retells the best ofthese traditional German tales, with pictures by Fritz Wegner which are perfectly in the spirit of the prankster's wild tricks.

Book Synopsis Underground in Berlin by : Marie Jalowicz Simon
Download or read book Underground in Berlin written by Marie Jalowicz Simon and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 38410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling piece of undiscovered history, this is the true account of a young Jewish woman who survived World War II in Berlin. In 1942, Marie Jalowicz, a twenty-year-old Jewish Berliner, made the extraordinary decision to do everything in her power to avoid the concentration camps. She removed her yellow star, took on an assumed identity, and disappeared into the city. In the years that followed, Marie took shelter wherever it was offered, living with the strangest of bedfellows, from circus performers and committed communists to convinced Nazis. As Marie quickly learned, however, compassion and cruelty are very often two sides of the same coin. Fifty years later, Marie agreed to tell her story for the first time. Told in her own voice with unflinching honesty, Underground in Berlin is a book like no other, of the surreal, sometimes absurd day-to-day life in wartime Berlin. This might be just one woman's story, but it gives an unparalleled glimpse into what it truly means to be human.
Download or read book Eva's Cousin written by Sibylle Knauss and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berchtesgaden, Germany, is a beautiful place, set among the gentle meadow-clad hills rising to the sheer heights of bare Alpine peaks. It is here where an elderly woman arrives and recollects her past--and her peripheral role in a chapter of world history. She walks along a beaten path, which has come into being because so many tourists have ventured this way . . . to see something that exists only in her memory. In the summer of 1944, twenty-year-old Marlene is thrilled when her older, more glamorous cousin, Eva Braun, Adolph Hitler's mistress, invites her to come to the Fuhrer's Bavarian mountain retreat. Against her father's wishes, Marlene accepts, and immediately sets forth to Berghof. There, while Hitler is away desperately trying to turn the tides of war, Marlene finds herself in a strange paradise, a world of opulence and imminent danger, of freedom and surveillance. The two women sneak off and skinny-dip in a nearby-lake, watch films in the Fuhrer's private cinema, and flirt with the SS officers at the dinner table--one of whom will become Marlene's first lover. Initially delighted by Eva's attentions, Marlene later tries to understand the elusive connection between her cousin and the man she loves. In quiet defiance, she begins to commit her own acts of subversion, which include listening to BBC radio broadcasts, forbidden by the Fuhrer. But a clandestine mission of mercy will force her to question her allegiance to both her cousin and her country--and to face the chilling reality that exists outside her sheltered world. Based on the true experiences of Eva Braun's cousin, Gertrude Weisker, who has shared her memories with Sibylle Knauss after more thanfifty years of silence, "Eva's Cousin is a novel that illuminates the banality of the domestic face of evil. It casts a special light on the profound questions of innocence and complicity that still haunt much of the world today. "From the Hardcover edition.
