Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mercersburg Review, 1861, Vol. 13: Edited for the Alumni Association of Franklin and Marshall College The majority of these congregations were no doubt converts from heathen ism. This appears from chapter 4, 8. 9, where their former condition is de scribed as one of ignorance concerning God, and as a service Of false or un real gods; also from the remark, 6, 12, that the J udaizing errorists con strained them to be circumcised, which implies that they were not circumcis ed before. Compare also 1, 16. 2, 9. 4, 12. 5, 23. 6, 12. 13. At the same time we must suppose from the analogy of the other congregations founded by Paul, that a number of the Galatian converts were originally Jews, who, according to Josephus, were numerous in Ancyra. This appears from Gal. 2, 15 if. 3, 13. 8, 23-25. 4, 8, where the apostle, as a Jeans/z Christian, speaks of himself and his readers in a common plural. This explains also the more readily the frequent allusions of the Epistle to the Old Testament, and the allegorical interpretation of Sara and Hagar, chapter 4, 21 - 31. The congregations of Galatia were, therefore, like all the churches founded by Paul, of a mixed, yet predominantly Gentile Christian character. It was his practice to preach the Gospel first in the synagogue, and then through the medium of the proselytes of the gate, i. E. The God-fearing Gentiles or un circumcised semi-jews, who frequently attended the Jewish worship, to pre pm the way for the conversion of the Gentiles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born of Water and the Spirit presents essays on the sacraments by the three major representatives of "Mercersburg Theology," John Nevin, Philip Schaff, and Emanuel Gerhart. It focuses on Mercersburg's doctrine of baptism and Christian nurture, attempts to correct putative deficiencies of the major Reformed trajectories (e.g., New England and Princeton), and vigorously critiques the anti-sacramental animus of revivalistic evangelicalism. Mercersburg understood baptism as initiating a person (adult or infant) into the sacramental life of the church. Baptism and Eucharist were objective, spiritually real actions that made (what Nevin called) the "mystical presence" of Jesus Christ present to Christians, bringing transformative power into their lives. The present critical edition carefully preserves the original texts, while providing extensive introductions, annotations, and bibliography to orient the modern reader and facilitate further scholarship. The Mercersburg Theology Study Series is an attempt to make available for the first time, in attractive, readable, and scholarly modern editions, the key writings of the nineteenth-century movement known as the Mercersburg Theology. An ambitious multiyear project, it aims to make an important contribution to the scholarly community and to the broader reading public, who can at last be properly introduced to this unique blend of American and European, Reformed and Catholic theology.

Book excerpt: The mid-nineteenth century is a gold mine for contemporary scholars interested in American Protestant ecclesiology. There one will find the extensive writings of John Nevin who came to the notice of the theological world with The Anxious Bench, a critique of the "quackery" of Protestant revivalism. Influenced by a critical appropriation of cutting-edge contemporary German theology, he came to believe that the church was not "invisible," but the visible manifestation of Jesus Christ's incarnate life. Christians were to pursue unity, not in external institutional arrangements, but as unity of spiritual life. This compilation presents his theology of the catholicity of the church prior to his masterwork, The Mystical Presence, and a multifaceted, sophisticated critique of American sectarianism. This edition carefully preserves the original texts while providing extensive introductions, annotations, and bibliography. The Mercersburg Theology Study Series presents for the first time attractive, readable, scholarly modern editions of the key writings of the nineteenth-century movement known as the Mercersburg Theology. An ambitious multi-year project, it aims to make an important contribution to the academic community and to the broader public, who can at last be properly introduced to this unique blend of American and European Reformed and Catholic theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together with the sixteenth century, the nineteenth century is universally recognized as one of the two most creative periods in Protestant thought. It is also widely regarded as a period that marked a break with the heritage of the Reformation. In five elegantly written essays, B. A. Gerrish challenges this assumption by showing that some of the foremost leaders of nineteenth-century liberal Protestantism found loyalty to their tradition compatible with change and desired a development, rather than either rejection or repetition, of traditional doctrines. Gerrish considers five basic theological issues and shows how each is developed in the thinking of a nineteenth-century theologian of the Reformed tradition. The formal question of continuity and change in theological reflection is viewed through the work of Schleiermacher. Four other Reformed leaders are then studied to exemplify the material transformation of particular doctrines: Nevin (the church), John McLeod Campbell (the atonement), Alexander Schweizer (providence and predestination), and Biedermann (life eternal). Gerrish permits each of the five theologians to speak for himself about what he was doing and how it constituted a continuation of old doctrines. In so doing Gerrish invites the provocative question whether there was not something characteristically Protestant about their thinking precisely because they understood continuity as a kind of change. The essays offer a reassessment of nineteenth-century theological history, fresh interpretations of some classical answers to enduring theological questions, and a contribution to the wider problem of tradition in the modern world.

Book excerpt: John Nevin’s vision of the church as “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic” grew out of his critique of the revivalism and sectarianism that prevailed throughout evangelical Christianity in the nineteenth century. He deepens his perception of catholicity as an expression of Christian wholeness, his response to the parochialism that ruled American religion and life. He grounds congregational life and mission in the Lordship of Jesus Christ, ordered by the whole Christian tradition, which comes into focus in the Apostles’ Creed. This edition carefully preserves the original texts while providing extensive introductions, annotations, and bibliography to both orient the reader and to facilitate further scholarship. Book excerpt: In the mid nineteenth century, Reformed churchmen John Nevin and Philip Schaff launched a fierce attack on the reigning subjectivist and rationalist Protestantism of their day, giving birth to what is known as the "Mercersburg Theology." Their attempt to recover a high doctrine of the sacraments and the visible Church, among other things, led them into bitter controversy with Charles Hodge of Princeton Seminary, as well as several other prominent contemporaries. This book examines the contours of the disagreement between Mercersburg and Hodge, focusing on four loci in particular-Christology, ecclesiology, sacramentology, and church history. W. Bradford Littlejohn argues that, despite certain weaknesses in their theological method, the Mercersburg men offered a more robust and historically grounded paradigm for the Reformed faith than did Hodge. In the second part of the book, Littlejohn explores the value of the Mercersburg Theology as a bridgehead for ecumenical dialogue, uncovering parallels between Nevin's thought and prominent themes in Anglican, Catholic, and Orthodox theology, as well as recent debates within Reformed theology. This thorough study of one of the most creative movements in American theology offers an alluring vision of the quest for Reformed catholicity that is more relevant today than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the relatively short history of American Protestantism countless pastors, theologians, and pastor-theologians have addressed a variety of pragmatic issues facing Christian congregations. No one has done so with greater theological precision and passion than the Reformed theologian John Williamson Nevin (1803Ð1886). Nevin made his mark in American Protestantism with the publication of 'The Anxious Bench' and 'The Mystical Presence'. In this volume, Sam Hamstra brings to light Nevin's previously unpublished ÒLectures on Pastoral Theology,Ó a work that provides students with a more comprehensive portrait of one of the nineteenth century's leading Reformed theologians in America. Hamstra's introduction provides an important companion to Nevin's ÒLectures,Ó one that includes application for twenty-first-century pastors, as well as a surprise for those familiar with Nevin's critique of New Measures.
