Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mental Health of the Community and the Work of the Psychiatric Dispensary Indigestion and headache may be mental disorders just as truly as are morbid phantasies and distorted attitudes; it depends on their origin. The mental out-patient department or psychiatric dispensary of a hospital deals with symptoms of mental origin, whether the symptoms are called physical or mental. The psychiatric dispensary will be of the greatest value to the community when physicians and social workers who come into contact with cases of mental disorder or defect know the type of work done there. The teacher who promptly secures a psychiatric opinion on her subnormal and neurotic pupils, develops deeper insight into her own special educational task. Book excerpt: With relatable clinical vignettes that illustrate the applicability of each chapter’s content, as well as key chapter points that summarize major themes, Marijuana and Mental Health is the definitive, single source of comprehensive information on marijuana and mental health in modern American society. Balanced, focused, and highly readable, chapters address topics such as the effects of marijuana on the brain and mind, marijuana-related policy and legislation, the complex link between marijuana use and psychotic disorders, synthetic cannabinoids, and the treatment and prevention of marijuana misuse. Beyond offering clinical and research psychiatrists, psychiatric residents and fellows, clinical psychologists, and psychiatric nurses a comprehensive but concise compilation of research in this area, this reference informs clinical mental health practice as well as policy decisions by articulating the connection between marijuana and mental health, particularly in the United States.

Book excerpt: Significant changes have taken place in the policy landscape surrounding cannabis legalization, production, and use. During the past 20 years, 25 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis and/or cannabidiol (a component of cannabis) for medical conditions or retail sales at the state level and 4 states have legalized both the medical and recreational use of cannabis. These landmark changes in policy have impacted cannabis use patterns and perceived levels of risk. However, despite this changing landscape, evidence regarding the short- and long-term health effects of cannabis use remains elusive. While a myriad of studies have examined cannabis use in all its various forms, often these research conclusions are not appropriately synthesized, translated for, or communicated to policy makers, health care providers, state health officials, or other stakeholders who have been charged with influencing and enacting policies, procedures, and laws related to cannabis use. Unlike other controlled substances such as alcohol or tobacco, no accepted standards for safe use or appropriate dose are available to help guide individuals as they make choices regarding the issues of if, when, where, and how to use cannabis safely and, in regard to therapeutic uses, effectively. Shifting public sentiment, conflicting and impeded scientific research, and legislative battles have fueled the debate about what, if any, harms or benefits can be attributed to the use of cannabis or its derivatives, and this lack of aggregated knowledge has broad public health implications. The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids provides a comprehensive review of scientific evidence related to the health effects and potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis. This report provides a research agendaâ€"outlining gaps in current knowledge and opportunities for providing additional insight into these issuesâ€"that summarizes and prioritizes pressing research needs.

Book excerpt: Objectives:Increasing geographical and financial accessibility for the people with mental problems is one of the most important aims of the mental health care system. The budget for mental health care in Georgia has increased by 30% from 2016 to 2019. The great proportion (60%) of the budget is spent on improving the outpatient services for the patients with serious mental illness (SMI).Background:In order to improve the efficiency of the ongoing changes and to analyze the main obstacles for the reforms, the sixteen (16) outpatient clinics have been monitored in the different regions of Georgia.Materials and Methods:The assessment included quantitative and qualitative approach. The assessment was carried out by using a monitoring instrument approved by the Ministry of Health. We assessed the general data of the outpatient clinics and efficacy and availability of all the services, which are defined by the state program. Results and Conclusions: The study reveals that accessibility and provision with the necessary medication increased. But, due to the lack of mental health professionals in the regions, such as child psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, clinical psychologists, and social workers multidisciplinary treatment can't be carried out. Overall, we can conclude that the quality of outpatient services slightly but steadily is improving.

Book excerpt: This book educates and familiarizes psychiatrists with the impact of cannabis beyond the scope of addiction and ways to effectively discuss the existing literature and knowledge with patients. Cannabis in Psychiatric Practice is organized by clinical setting to help tailor the literature to psychiatrists and other mental health clinicians working in all areas, whether traditional outpatient clinics, emergency departments, inpatient psychiatry or medical units. It helps readers, regardless of their training background, learn about the impact of cannabis on a variety of disorders in a manner adjusted to the unique needs and challenges of their particular treatment settings and patient populations. The book also includes clinical cases and practical tips integrating the current evidence, treatment approaches, and psychoeducation needed to effectively practice in the era of modern-day psychiatry and cannabis legalization. Chapters are written in a clear, easy-to-read style, allowing readers to reference specific portions of the book as needed, increasing its utility for the general psychiatrist and mental health clinician. With the increasing prevalence and availability of cannabis and CBD products, this book is an invaluable reference for psychiatrists who wish to explore the impact of cannabis in their clinical practice.
