Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Memoirs of Baron Thiebault, Vol. 2 of 2: Late Lieutenant-General in the French Army All this while my convalescence did not make so much progress as I had hoped and a doctor of high reputation, after a careful examination of me, decided that I must return to France and follow a course of treatment which, as he said, was impossible, except with the regular habits of domestic life. Accordingly on June 10 I started in a felucca for Nice. J ust after passing Savona we fell in with another felucca, which went along in company with us. It had General Sarrazin on board, and also a young captain who had been on Bonaparte's staff in Egypt. I have forgotten his name, but he was a clever and enthusiastic young fellow. He was leaving the service to marry, and I took him in my carriage from Nice to Paris. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Memoirs of Baron Thie bault, Vol. 1 of 2: Late Lieutenant-General in the French Army The rage for publishing the recollections left in manuscript by those who witnessed or took part in the conflicts that were distracting Europe a century ago, has brought to light during the last few years an enormous amount of material of very various merit. It is almost needless to say that for by far the largest proportion of this we are indebted to France. France is, and always has been, the chosen home of them memoire. Other nations have produced equally great and perhaps more trustworthy historians; but from the days of Joinville till now, in the art of relating personal experiences, the Frenchman has stood supreme. As regards the particular period, moreover, it is only what we should expect. The gigantic part played by France in the world's affairs from 1789 to 1815 was surely enough to turn every Frenchman, conscious of the smallest literary faculty - and few Frenchmen are devoid of it - into a Thucydides. A vast number rushed into print before the echoes of the conflict had fully died away. They had their reward in a keener personal interest, but on the other hand trammels of "fear or favour" were upon them; and even if they could have succeeded in freeing themselves from these, odium et amor on the reader's part were still to be reckoned with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Memoirs of Baron Thiebault (Late Lieutenant-General in the French Army), Vol. 1 of 2: Translated and Condensed General Thiebault belonged to the latter class; at least so we must assume from the fact that his memoirs have remained in manuscript for nearly fifty years after his death The editor, M. Fernand Calmettes, does not indeed say in so many words that they have been so long withheld from publication by Thiebault's expressed desire; but considering the distinguished position which the writer held both as a soldier and as a man of letters, it would seem improbable that, without some such obstacle to their publication, his family would have allowed such an extremely valuable contribution to the history of the time to remain so long unknown. Book Synopsis Wellington Against Soult by : David Buttery
Download or read book Wellington Against Soult written by David Buttery and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2016-07-31 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of David Butterys third book on the Peninsular War lies the comparison between two great commanders of enormous experience and reputation Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, and Jean de Dieu Soult. In Soult, Wellesley met one of his most formidable opponents and they confronted each other during one of the most remarkable, and neglected, of the Peninsular campaigns. Soults invasion of Portugal is rarely studied in great depth and, likewise, the offensive Wellesley launched, which defeated and expelled the French, has also received scant coverage. As well as giving a fresh insight into the contrasting characters of the two generals, the narrative offers a gripping and detailed, reconstruction of the organization and experience of a military campaign 200 years ago.
