Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume continues the tradition of the preceding volumes. covering a wide range of crystal growth problems and treating aspects of critical importance for crystalliza tion. Changes in this field of knowledge have. however, changed the criteria for selection of papers for inclusion in this series. The increasing role of crystals in science and technology is even more apparent today. The study and utilization of these highly perfect objects of nature considerably facilitates progress in the physics and chemistry of solids. quantum electronics, optics, microelectron ics, and other sciences. The demand for crystals and crystal devices has grown steadily and has led to the emergence and rapid growth of the single crystal industry (we can safely saythat the state ofthe art in this industry is indicative ofthe overall scientific and technolo- cal potential of a country). At the same time, the introduction of crystallization techniques into other industries is gaining ever-increasing importance. To illustrate this last state ment, we can mention the fabrication of textured structural materials and direct methods of metal reduction in ores by using chemical vapor transport techniques. Crystallization tech ll niques progress both in "width" and in "depth : traditional methods are modernized. and novel techniques appear, some of them at the junction of the already existing technologies (for example, flux growth of crystals, growth from vapor with participation of the liquid phase, etc. ).

Book excerpt: In this somewhat emotional book, you will find it argued that anthropogenic global warming (AGW) is not real, but is in fact no more than a political tool. Actually, we'd be better of with more carbon dioxide rather than less. Further along in the book, you will find reasons (and possible ways) to in fact stop the failed experiment of politics and return to a more natural order: liberty, no aggression, no hypocrisy and a (better) future for all. It's the only way forward for mankind (planetkind). Also, government has turned against the people, and has thereby waived its right of existence. The only way forward for human kind, would be without government, in its entirety, as government will always devolve into what it is now: a force for harm. Like it or not, this leaves open only one (also the most durable) option: anarchism. Do not fear disorder: anarchism shall lead to more order in society. Anarchism is better in so many ways, that they would fill a whole book, and still leave out some.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s Richard B. Alley and his colleagues made headlines with the discovery that the last ice age came to an abrupt end over a period of only three years. In The Two-Mile Time Machine, Alley tells the fascinating history of global climate changes as revealed by reading the annual rings of ice from cores drilled in Greenland. He explains that humans have experienced an unusually temperate climate compared to the wild fluctuations that characterized most of prehistory. He warns that our comfortable environment could come to an end in a matter of years and tells us what we need to know in order to understand and perhaps overcome climate changes in the future. In a new preface, the author weighs in on whether our understanding of global climate change has altered in the years since the book was first published, what the latest research tells us, and what he is working on next.

Book excerpt: This book is a self-contained collection of scholarly papers targeting an audience of practicing researchers, academics, PhD students, and other scientists. This book describes the rapidly developing field of fiber laser technology filling the very important role of providing students, researchers, and technology managers with valuable, timely, and unbiased information on the subject. The objective of this book is to highlight recent progress and trends in fiber laser technology covering a wide range of topics, such as self-pulsing phenomena in high-power continuous wave (CW) Yb-doped fiber lasers, Q-switched fiber laser, mode-locked fiber laser using carbon nanotubes (CNT), properties of double-scale pulses in mode-locked fiber laser, Brillouin fiber laser, dual-wave length fiber laser (DWFL) for microwave (MHz) and terahertz (THz) radiation generation, tunable fiber laser based on twin core optical fiber, reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA)-based fiber laser, dissipative soliton phenomena in fiber lasers, noiselike pulses (NLPs) in Yb-doped fiber laser, ultra fast fiber laser, numerical simulation in Q-switched and mode-locked fiber laser, gain saturation in optical fiber laser amplifiers, heat generation and removal in fiber lasers, and different fiber laser based technologies for material processing. We hope that this book will be useful for students, researchers, and professionals, who work with fiber lasers. This book will also serve as an interesting and valuable reference that will impact, stimulate, and promote further advances in the area of fiber lasers

Book excerpt: This series of books, which is published at the rate of about one per year, addresses fundamental problems in materials science. The contents cover a broad range of topics from small clusters of atoms to engineering materials and involve chemistry, physics, and engineering, with length scales ranging from Ångstroms up to millimeters. The emphasis is on basic science rather than on applications. Each book focuses on a single area of current interest and brings together leading experts to give an up-to-date discussion of their work and the work of others. Each article contains enough references that the interested reader can access the relevant literature. Thanks are given to the Center for Fundamental Materials Research at Michigan State University for supporting this series. M. F. Thorpe, Series Editor E-mail: thorpe@pa. msu. edu v PREFACE th th During the period 4 -8 August 1996, a conference with the same title as this book was held in Traverse City, Michigan. That conference was organized as a sequel to an interesting and successful WEM workshop in a similar area run by Profs. Hans Bonzel and Bill Mullins in May 1995. This book contains papers presented at the Traverse City conference. The book focuses on: atomic processes, step structure and dynamics; and their effect on surface and interface structures and on the relaxation kinetics of larger leng- scale nonequilibrium morphologies.
