Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanics of Building Construction During the summer of 1906 the author was requested by the Board of Education to give a course of lectures at South Kensington upon "The Mechanics of Building Construction" to a number of Science teachers selected by the Department from all parts of the Kingdom, with the object of perfecting their knowledge of the subject and at the same time illustrating the manner in which it should be taught. The course was so well appreciated by the teachers that a repetition was asked for in 1907, and was duly given to another selected group. Those lectures form the basis of the present work; but in preparing his notes for the press the author has made some alteration in the division of the sections and many additions to the text and drawings, and has revised the remainder where expedient. The details have been expanded, and explained more fully than they were in the first instance, so that what was originally prepared for teachers only is now available also for students, and forms a complete text-book of all the more important branches of the subject. The matter is divided up into thirty chapters so that, if used as lectures, each would occupy not more than one and a half hours in delivery, including the time taken up in sketching the diagrams on the blackboard. The want of a good general work upon the principles of Structural Engineering, which covers the whole ground that a student needs to traverse before he begins to specialise, has often been felt by young architects and engineers, although there are many books dealing with some of the elementary branches which leave little to be desired. This work is intended to supply the deficiency. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Construction and Materials The volumes of the International Library of Technology are made up of Instruction Papers, or Sections, comprising the various courses of instruction for students of the International Correspondence Schools. The original manuscripts are pre pared by persons thoroughly qualified both technically and by experience to write with authority, and in many cases they are regularly employed elsewhere in practical work as experts. The manuscripts are then carefully edited to make them suit able for correspondence instruction. The Instruction Papers are written clearly and in the simplest language possible, so as to make them readily understood by all students. Necessary technical expressions are clearly explained when introduced. The great majority of our students wish to prepare them selves for advancement in their vocations or to qualify for more congenial occupations. Usually they are employed and able to devote only a few hours a day to study. Therefore every effort must be made to give them practical and accurate information in clear and concise form and to make this infor mation include all of the essentials but none of the non essentials. To make the text clear, illustrations are used freely. These illustrations are especially made by our own Illustrating Department in order to adapt them fully to the requirements of the text. In the table of contents that immediately follows are given the titles of the Sections included in this volume, and under each title are listed the main topics discussed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Building Construction The art of building has never been fully discussed from the engineer's standpoint, and it is not proposed herein to attempt such discussion, but there are a number of points resulting from practical experience which will be touched upon with a view to supplementing the course in Building Construction at the Engineer School. Every military engineer should be master of construction in all its forms. Probably the first really difficult structures erected by man had their origin in military requirements; so, military engineering may fairly claim to be the father of all construction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Safe Building Construction: A Treatise Giving in Simplest Forms Possible Practical and Theoretical Rules and Formulae Used in Construction of Buildings and General Instruction Safe building construction is the logical sequence of my former work on Construction, Safe Building. Methods of construction and building materials have changed so radically that this new book seems called for. Much of my former work has been retained, though my object has been to condense - saving the student's time in these busy days while still following the original plan which wasz - to furnish to any earnest student the Opportunity to acquire, so far as books will teach, the knowledge necessary to erect safely any building. While of course, the work will be based strictly on the science of mechanics, all useless theory will be avoided. The object will be to make the articles simply practical. To follow any of the mathematical demonstrations, arithmetic, a rudimentary knowledge of algebra and plane geometry will be sufficient. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Construction, Vol. 1: Showing the Employment of Timber, Lead, and Iron Work, in the Practical Construction of Buildings; Text IN preparing the following pages, the author has been mainly desirous to place before the student a statement. Of the leading points connected with the employment of Timber, Lead, and Iron in the construction of buildings, in such a way that, while being to a large extent explana tory of the technical terms used in Building Construction, they would also convey a fair idea of the methods by which these various materials are used, and the forms and arrangements they assume in practice. An explana tion of the natural peculiarities, and a description of the industrial characteristics and values of the materials, and of the principles upon which the structures in which they are used are based, forms no part of the scheme of the work. This is reserved for the volume on Building Construction, Advanced Course, in this series, to which, therefore, the student is referred. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Construction and Superintendence, Vol. 2 The successful practice of Architecture requires not only ability to draw and design, but also a thorough knowledge of building construction in all its branches, at least so far as to know how the work should be done, and conscientious and painstaking supervision of the work. Without a knowledge of the best methods of performing building operations, and of the materials that should be used, it is impossible for the architect to prepare his specifications intelligently, and so as to secure the kind of work he wishes done; and upon the thoroughness with which the specifications are prepared depends in a great measure the satisfactory execution of the work. The position occupied by the architect as a judge or referee between the owner and contractor also makes it necessary that he should be able to show such thorough familiarity with common practice as will command the respect of both. Workmen soon discover whether the superintendent is familiar with the difference between good and bad work, and if they find him wanting they are quite sure to take advantage of his lack of knowledge. After the plans and specifications have been prepared with the utmost care, accidents, failures and bad work are quite sure to occur unless the building operations are carefully and intelligently supervised. In fact, probably more failures in buildings occur from the use of poor materials and bad workmanship than from faults in the plans. While it is impossible for one to acquire a thorough knowledge of building construction from books alone, it is necessary, for the young architect, especially, to depend upon technical books to a large extent for his knowledge of how work should be done, and of what materials are best suited for certain purposes, and how they should be used. As a substitute for his lack of knowledge, he must rely largely upon knowledge gained through the experience of others, oftentimes at great cost. In these books the author has endeavored to describe all the ordinary building operations in such a way that they may be easily understood, and to point out the defects often met with in building materials and construction, and to indicate in a measure how they may be avoided. To get along well with contractors and workmen the architect must feel sure that his opinions and decisions are correct, and stick to them. Of course one can often learn much from practical builders, but unless he is already somewhat informed upon the subject he is often likely to be imposed upon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Materials: Being an Introduction to the Study of the Principal Materials Used in Building Construction This book is intended to be an introduction to the study of Building Materials for the instruction of the young builder and architect. Only the principal materials are dealt with, special stress being laid on the exact examination of the materials for their constructional strength under different conditions, and their composition as revealed by chemical analysis, and by the microscope. The author realises that some, at any rate, of his readers may be unacquainted with the elements of chemistry. He has, therefore, tried to make the essential chemical information as simple as possible at the risk of some repetition. The student is advised to regard this book as merely introductory, and pursue his studies further by reading, more especially, Howe's Geology of Building Stones; The Materials of Construction, by Johnson; The Chemistry and Testing of Cements, by Desch; Concrete, Plain and Reinforced, by Taylor and Thompson; Modern Brickmaking, by Searle The Mechanical Properties of Wood, by Record; House Painting and Decoration, by Jennings; and Modern Asphalt Pavements, by Richardson. The author wishes at this point to express his deep indebtedness to these text-books in particular, as well as to others, for the information contained in the following pages. In addition, various text-books, the publications of the Engineering and Architectural Societies, both here and in America and the Reports of the Washington Bureau for the investigation of Building Materials have been consulted. Students interested in the resistance to fire of various materials should consult the Reports of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The author wishes especially to thank Professor Desch, Mr Searle, Mr Howe, Mr Borthwick, Mr Jennings, and Mr Vaughan for having kindly looked through the chapters in which they are Specially interested, and made many valuable criticisms and suggestions.
