Book excerpt: An experimental method of determining dynamic flow stress where the stress is homogeneous is developed using a pendulum bar suspension system. A small specimen is mounted on the end of one of the bars and the other bar is impacted on the free and of the specimen. For copper, the dynamic stress is 29% larger than the static stress for a strain rate of about 100/sec (or an increase in strain rate of about 5 orders of magnitude). For various tests, the increase in dynamic stress over the static value varied from 17% to 45%. This variation is comparable with the expected scatter for a typical test (plus or minus 10%) predicted from the uncertainties in measurement. (Author).

Book excerpt: Cold-drawn copper rods were end-impacted with projectiles having lengths of 1 to 5 inches and initial velocities of 500 to 1240 in./sec, and the resulting plastic strain profiles were measured. Also the strain profiles were calculated using a numerical method based on the method of characteristics and on material properties which are rate sensitive. The reliability of the concepts employed in these calculations was indicated by the good agreement between the measured and calculated strain profiles. Strain rate exponent, defined as the slope of the curve of log stress versus log plastic strain rate, was found by these calculations to increase with increasing strain rate, reaching a value of about 0.04 at a plastic strain rate, reaching a value of about 0.04 at a plastic strain rate of 400/sec. Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Constitutive Relation in High/Very High Strain Rates (CRHVHSR) was held October 16 - 19, 1995, at Seminar House, Science University of Tokyo, under the sponsorship of IUTAM, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, The Commemorative Association for the Japan World Exposition (1970), Inoue Foundation for Science, The Japan Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences, and Science University of Tokyo. The proposal to hold the symposium was accepted by the General Assembly of IUT AM held in Haifa, Israel, in August 1992, and the scientists mentioned below were appointed by the Bureau of IUTAM to serve as members of the Scientific Committee. The main object of the symposium was to make a general survey of recent developments in the research of constitutive relations in high and very high strain rates and related problems in high velocity solid mechanics, and to explore further new ideas for dealing with unresolved problems of a fundamental nature as well as of practical importance. The subjects covered theoretical, experimental, and numerical fields in the above-mentioned problems in solids, covering metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Emphasis was given to the following fields: 1. Material characterization of solids in high velocity deformation, experimental techniques, typical data obtained by these techniques, modeling, and constitutive relations 2. Strain rate dependent elasto-visco-plastic stress waves 3. Crack initiation, propagation, and dynamic fracture toughness 4. Dynamic stress concentration 5. Structural dynamics in impact and constitutive relations of solids 6.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers data, examples, and applications supporting the use of the mechanical threshold stress (MTS) model Written by Paul S. Follansbee, an international authority in the field, this book explores the underlying theory, mechanistic basis, and implementation of the mechanical threshold stress (MTS) model. Readers are introduced to such key topics as mechanical testing, crystal structure, thermodynamics, dislocation motion, dislocation–obstacle interactions, hardening through dislocation accumulation, and deformation kinetics. The models described in this book support the emerging theme of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) by offering a foundation for the bridge between length scales characterizing the mesoscale (mechanistic) and the macroscopic. Fundamentals of Strength begins with a chapter that introduces various approaches to measuring the strength of metals. Next, it covers: Structure and bonding Contributions to strength Dislocation–obstacle interactions Constitutive law for metal deformation Further MTS model developments Data analysis: deriving MTS model parameters The next group of chapters examines the application of the MTS model to copper and nickel, BCC metals and alloys, HCP metals and alloys, austenitic stainless steels, and heavily deformed metals. The final chapter offers suggestions for the continued development and application of the MTS model. To help readers fully understand the application of the MTS model, the author presents two fictional materials along with extensive data sets. In addition, end-of-chapter exercises give readers the opportunity to apply the models themselves using a variety of data sets. Appropriate for both students and materials researchers, Fundamentals of Strength goes beyond theory, offering readers a model that is fully supported with examples and applications.

Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications SHOCK INDUCED TRANSITIONS AND PHASE STRUCTURES IN GENERAL MEDIA is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1990-91 IMA program on "Phase Transitions and Free Boundaries." The workshop focused on the thermodynamics and mechanics of dynamic phase transitions that are mainly inertially driven and brought together physicists, metallurgists, mathematicians, engineers, and molecular dynamicists with interests in these problems. Financial support of the National Science Foundation made the meeting pos sible. We are grateful to J .E. Dunn, Roger Fosdick, and Marshall Slemrod for organizing the meeting and editing the proceedings. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, .Jr. PREFACE When a body is subjected to a strong shock the material may suffer severe local structural changes. Rapid solidification, liquification, or vaporization can oc cur, and, moreover, complex structural heterogeneity is often left in the wake of the passing wave. Thus, inertially driven shock waves raise fundamental questions involving experiment, theory, and mathematics which bear on phase stability and metastability, as well as on reaction kinetics and appropriate measures of phase structure.
