Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of a volunteer music therapy program on the self-esteem and locus of control of children survivors of domestic violence residing in a shelter for domestic violence. An experimental group which received music therapy and a no-contact control group were used in this study. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory Scale was used to measure the subjects' selfesteem while the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control scale was used to measure the subjects' locus of control in both groups. These tests were administered before and after treatment for the experimental group. The control group was pre-tested during their first week in the shelter, and post-tested during their last week. No significant difference between groups was found for the subjects' self esteem while significant differences were found between groups for the subjects' locus of control. It appeared that some individual subjects in the experimental group benefited from their involvement in the music therapy sessions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the quality of life and anxiety/depression level of cancer patients and their families within a hospital setting. Any patient admitted to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare that met the criteria for this study as determined by the medical personnel, was considered as a potential subject. The music therapy sessions consisted of a song written about the patient and family, live preferred music and counseling to help the patient and family. The experimental and control groups were randomly assigned. The experimental group (N=40), recieved two sessions of music therapy. The first music therapy session was used to gather information that the patient and family wanted to use in the song and also to assess the level of coping. The second music therapy session consisted of giving the patient a copy of the song, and a live performance of the song. The patient and one family member then provided self-report data on the Anxiety/Depression questionnaire, and the Hospice Quality of Life Index questionnaire. One week later, the patient was contacted and asked to fill out the same questionnaires as before and a Songwriting Quesionnaire. The control group (N=40), received one music therapy session consisting of preferred live music and counseling for the patient and family. At the end of each session, the patient and family member completed the Anxiety/Depression questionnaire and the Hospice Quality of Life questionnaire. One week later, the patient was contacted again to complete the same questionnaires as before. The patient Hospice Quality of Life questionnaire showed significantly higher scores for the experimental one-week post session group than the control one-week post session group. The Songwriting Questionnaire filled out only by the experimental subjects, showed a high mean score of 8.5 on a 10 point scale for coping skills.

As such, it provides neuroscience with a highly effective tool to develop our understanding of brain function, connectivity and plasticity. Increasingly sophisticated neuroimaging technologies have enabled the expanding field of music neuroscience to reveal how musical experience, perception and cognition may support neuroplasticity, with important implications for the rehabilitation and assessment of those with acquired brain injuries and neurodegenerative conditions. Other studies have indicated the potential for music to support arousal, attention and emotional regulation, suggesting therapeutic applications for conditions including ADHD, PTSD, autism, learning disorders and mood disorders. In common with neuroscience, the music therapy profession has advanced significantly in the past 20 years. Various interventions designed to address functional deficits and health care needs have been developed, alongside standardised behavioural assessments. Historically, music therapy has drawn its evidence base from a number of contrasting theoretical frameworks. Clinicians are now turning to neuroscience, which offers a unifying knowledge base and frame of reference to understand and measure therapeutic interventions from a biomedical perspective. Conversely, neuroscience is becoming more enriched by learning about the neural effects of ‘real world’ clinical applications in music therapy. While neuroscientific imaging methods may provide biomarking evidence for the efficacy of music therapy interventions it also offers important tools to describe time-locked interactive therapy processes and feeds into the emerging field of social neuroscience. Music therapy is bound to the process of creating and experiencing music together in improvisation, listening and reflection. Thus the situated cognition and experience of music developing over time and in differing contexts is of interest in time series data. We encouraged researchers to submit papers illustrating the mutual benefits of dialogue between music therapy and other disciplines important to this field, particularly neuroscience, neurophysiology, and neuropsychology. The current eBook consists of the peer reviewed responses to our call for papers.

Book excerpt: There has been a limited amount of research on the use of experiential education with music therapy students. Most of the research conducted has focused on the experiences of graduate level students. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to understand the potential effect of experiential music therapy education on undergraduate and graduate equivalency students' reported empathy and self-esteem. Five undergraduate and five graduate equivalency students were enrolled in a music therapy course in which they were asked to role-play the therapist and the client in mock music therapy sessions. Undergraduate participants completed the Davis Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and the Janis-Field Feelings of Inadequacy Scale (Janis-Field) as pre and posttest measures. Undergraduates also provided responses to elicited journal questions and participated in a semi-structured telephone interview. Graduate participants completed the IRI and the Janis-Field as a posttest measure after the completion of the semester, provided responses to elicited journal questions, and participated in a semi-structured telephone interview. There were no significant changes from pretest to posttest for undergraduate students and no significant relationships between the posttest scores of undergraduate and graduate participants. Qualitative data analysis for undergraduate and graduate students indicated that participants were able to identify changes in their own empathy and self-esteem as a result of the role-playing experiences. Implications for further research are discussed.
