Book Synopsis The Meaning and Translation of ἰδού and ἴδε 'behold' by : Nicholas A Bailey
Download or read book The Meaning and Translation of ἰδού and ἴδε 'behold' written by Nicholas A Bailey and published by SIL International. This book was released on 2023-10-25 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Koine Greek particles ἰδού and ἴδε have been traditionally translated as either 'behold' or 'lo'. But such mechanical renderings are inadequate as they suggest these particles can be reduced to a single meaning or function. As argued in this monograph, these particles actually have several distinct uses that are conditioned by their linguistic context, and a translator should find natural idioms in the receptor language that match the meaning and function of these Greek uses.

Book Synopsis Nave's Topical Bible by : Orville James Nave
Download or read book Nave's Topical Bible written by Orville James Nave and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 1990 with total page 1618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nave's Topical Bible, " the best known of all topical bibles, has been a valuable Bible-study reference and a best-seller for more than 75 years. It is a comprehensive digest of over 20,000 topics and subtopics with more than 100,000 associated Scripture references. The most significant references for each topic actually include the full text of the verse cited--saving the need to separately look up each verse. Because "Nave's "groups verses by "idea" (or "topic"), it offers a better overview of relevant Scriptures than a concordance, which only lists or indexes verses according to specific words. This edition also includes the helpful Scripture index (left out of some other editions), which makes it possible for the reader studying a particular biblical text to locate every topic and grouping of Scripture in "Nave's "whenever a particular verse is included. That way, it is possible for the reader to study either all the verses related to a particular topic "or" all the topics related to a particular verse--it works both ways. For the pastor or teacher interested in saving hours of time but not willing to give their second best, and for anyone wanting to be challenged by what God has to say about a given subject, "Nave's Topical Bible" is the passport that will allow immediate and successful entry to the many points of interest.
Book Synopsis Language System, Translation Technique, and Textual Tradition in the Peshitta of Kings by : Janet W. Dyk
Download or read book Language System, Translation Technique, and Textual Tradition in the Peshitta of Kings written by Janet W. Dyk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the VU University syntactically analyzed, hiearchically structured database of ancient languages, the authors compared the Masoretic text of Kings to the Syriac Peshitta translation. The core question in this comparison is: which deviations between the two texts are related to the requirements of the distinct language systems, which are related to other aspects of the translation process, and which are related to the transmission history of the translated text? Though linguistic and text-historical approaches differ in method and focus, research into ancient biblical translations must take both into account. On the basis of a synoptic matching at clause level, corresponding phrases within the clauses are matched, and corresponding words within phrases. A choice out of a wealth of detailed differences thus brought to light are discussed at the syntactic level at which the phenomenon best fits: word, phrase, clause and above the clause.

Book Synopsis Introduction to the Interlinear Bible by : Steven Ortlepp
Download or read book Introduction to the Interlinear Bible written by Steven Ortlepp and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-01-27 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interlinear is closely connected to translation work in general. Where translation occurs, there one will find an interlinear in one form or another. What is meant by "interlinear"? An interlinear consists of two parts, the original language text, accompanied by its translated text, above or below the line. Where the "interlinear" text is found next to the original language text (in brackets), the translation could be classified as an interlinear, although strictly speaking, it should be called an "intertext" translation. This Introduction examines the history and development of the interlinear Bible.
Book Synopsis Africans Are Not Black by : Kwesi Tsri
Download or read book Africans Are Not Black written by Kwesi Tsri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africans are not literally black, yet they are called black. Why? This book explores the genesis and evolution of the description of Africans as black, the consequences of this practice, and how it contributes to the denigration (blackening) and dehumanisation of Africans. It uses this analysis to advance a case for abandoning the use of the term ‘black’ to describe and categorise Africans. Mainstream discussions of the history of European racism have generally neglected the role of black and white colour symbolisms in sustaining the supposed superiority of those labelled white over those labelled black. This work redresses that neglect, by tracing the genesis of the conception of Africans as black in ancient Greece and its continued employment in early Christian writings, followed by an original, close analysis of how this use is replicated in three key representative texts: Shakespeare's Othello, the translation of the Bible into the African language Ewe, and a book by the influential Ghanaian religious leader, Mensa Otabil. It concludes by directly addressing the argument that ‘black’ can be turned into a positive concept, demonstrating the failure of this approach to deal with the real problems raised by imposing the term ‘black’ on its human referents.
