Book excerpt: This is a cultural and intellectual history of the Ordnance Survey, which mapped Ireland from 1824 to 1846. Captain Thomas Larcom of the Survey intended to produce and encyclopaedia-like series of county memoirs to accompany the maps, a great survey that would explain Ireland literally, as the maps would represent it graphically. Only one memoir (for Templemore, County Derry), was published before the project was suspended by not before and immense amount of research had been undertaken for the whole country. These memoir reports by Ordnance engineers, scholars and local civic assistants constitute a remarkable archive on culture, folklore, religious practices, oral histories and social structures, before much was swept away by the Famine, modernization and anglicization. This study establishes the critical importance of the Ordnance Survery in nation building.

Download or read book Stephen J. Cannell Television Productions written by Jon Abbott and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The face of 1980s television was shaped by a man who stayed behind the scenes. Stephen Cannell's reluctant white knights--put-upon private eye James Rockford, World War II fly-boys the Black Sheep Squadron, hapless superhero Ralph Hinckley, fugitive mercenaries the A-Team, and maverick cop Hunter--traversed the television landscape from the 1970s to the 1990s. Cannell changed the face of the action-adventure genre, updating the crime-show format with a hybrid of rebellious morality, juvenile wit, intelligent sarcasm, and radical conservatism. This book discusses in detail the programs of the writer-producer and lists every episode of his award-winning productions from the early 1970s to the early '90s. The book features publicity photos and descriptions of unsold pilots.

Download or read book The Munster Plantation written by Michael MacCarthy-Morrogh and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1986 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first detailed study of the English settlements in southwest Ireland, this book argues that the migration was, rather than a "colonial" process, a natural movement from southwest England to a pleasant neighboring region. Concentrating on the Munster plantation, the author reveals the ways in which the English both modified the province and were changed by its local conditions.
