Equation (6) can be easily derived from (9); if we put 11 lp for tp, we shall get Multiplying (12) and (13) together and comparing the product with (14), equating irrational parts with irrational parts, and rational parts with rational parts, we shall get which are fundamental equations in trigonometry. V Also, if in (6) we put n = 2, we shall get (cosap-simp)" = cos2centsp + /(--1) SlI124p; expanding the binomial, and equating irrational parts, we shall get _ SiI12(p=2SlI1lpCOSqJ, cos 2 p = cos' lp--sin" tp. It is evident that (15) and ( 16) will give the same results if we put a = b = tp. Again, if in equation (9) we write---(p for tp, we shall have ' _ + 2. If we develop the exponentials in these equations, we shall get 8 5 For other applications of these equations see CnAuvE1mr's Trigonometry, and MorcNo's Differential Calculus. DEMONSTRATION. Let re = 1 and y = 1; since these are the least values that can be given them. Then will the succeeding values of z be 1---b, 1---2b, &c., to 1 + (12---1) b, for the nth solution. (Prop. VII.) Substituting for x and y their least values for the nth solution, as thus obtained, we have ax-l--by=a(1----(n--1)b)--b=(n--1)ab--a---b=c; which is the value required. Pnor. XI. When c = nu b, the equation ax---by = c admits of only n--1 solutions, in whole numbers. DEM. Put v for the first value of 2: . Then will v---(n---1) b be the nth value as before. Excerpt: ...hypothesis either of right angle or of obtuse angle; and therefore (from V and VI of this) is destroyed the hypothesis of acute angle. So then it holds, that there will be no place for the hypothesis of acute angle, if the straight AX drawn under however small angle from the point A of AB must at length meet (anyhow at an infinite distance) any perpendicular BX, which is supposed erected at any distance from this point A upon this secant AB. Quod erat etc. SOME DIVISIBILITY TESTS. By WM. E. HEAL, Member of the London Mathematical Society, Marion, Indiana. In the Educational Times for March, 1897, Professor Sylvester proposed the following problem: "If the digits r in number of any integer AT read from left to right be multiplied repeatedly by the first r terms of the recurring series 1, 4, 3, --1, --4, -3; 1, 4, 3, -i, --4, -3, show that, if the sum of these products be divisible by 13, so N will be, and not otherwise." The reason for the rule is apparent when we notice that 1, 4, 3, --1, --4, --3 are the remainders in reverse order of 10', 102, 103, 10, 105, 10" mod. 13; or what is the same thing in the development of,1s as a circulating decimal. Since we may prefix any number of ciphers to any number, it is clear that we may start with any number of the series only being careful to preserve the cyclical order. For example, we might equally as well write the series 3, -1, -4, -3,1,4. Example. 11140640173 is divisible by 13 because 1(1) +4(1) +3(1)--1(4)-4(0)-3(6) + l(4) + 4(0) + 3(l)-l(7)-4(3)=-26=-2(13). 728 is divisible by (13) because 3(7)-l(2)-4(8)=-13. The reason for the rule suggests its extension to any number whatever. Thus i developed in a circulating decimal gives the constant remainder 1 and we have the well known rule that...

Book excerpt: With an emphasis on value-added business leadership, Estes (Strategic Measures Inc.) examines the key issues of fully participating in the green revolution while maintaining and enhancing organizational profitability. He cleverly draws upon his extensive consulting experiences to provide a timely, user-friendly guide for small to midsized organizations on implementing ecosensitive and sustainable business practices. From building alliances to a whole-systems approach to sustainability, the book's eight well-written and readable chapters clearly articulate the challenges and opportunities of participating in the cultural shift to a green world. Step by step, chapters explore the unique synergism among entrepreneurship, sustainability, and success as a part of an organization's strategic and profit plans. An appendix containing a useful list of green resources completes the book.
