Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Master of Game is the oldest and most important work on the chase in the English language. Based primarily on Gaston de Foix's Livre de chasse, originally composed in 1387, The Master of Game was written by Edward of Norwich at his leisure between 1406 and 1413, mostly while being held prisoner for having treasonous designs against his cousin, Henry IV. While much of the book is almost an exact translation of de Foix, Edward added five chapters of his own to form the major source for our knowledge of the medieval hunt. The book begins with a description of the nature of popular quarry, such as the hare, deer, and badger, including their behavior, characteristics, and even smells, and then moves to a discussion of various hunting dog breeds and how to train them. The medieval chase was a ritual event, so the book continues with an explanation of the various rules and techniques for a successful hunt, including how food was to be distributed among the hunters, the support persons, and the dogs. Weapons and traps of choice are also described, as well as the different horn calls used for communication. The Master of Game is a unique text for naturalists, hunters, and persons interested in social history. Although hunting is nowadays far removed from most people's experience, it was of major interest in the time of Edward of Norwich for ritual, sport, and, of course, food. Some knowledge of the chase was essential for all persons of medieval times. This edition, the first paperback ever of the original version edited in 1909, includes a hearty foreword by Theodore Roosevelt, who adds some important contextual information about the chase and draws on his own vast hunting experience. A delight to read, even for those who are not keen on the sport, The Master of Game has, as one review exclaimed," all Chaucer's freshness, love of the open sky and fragrant woodland."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Master of Hounds: Illustrated From Photographs This, the third volume of The Hunting Library, deals with a subject at once more simple and more complex than that covered by its predecessors; more simple because its scope is determined by a review of the personality, the duties and the difficulties of a single official more complex because, if we are to contemplate any approach to a proper estimate of all that the Master of Hounds means in the social and sporting world, it is necessary to consider hls privileges and obli gations not merely from his own standpoint, but also from those of his followers, farmers or otherwise, and his servants. To a complete under standing of his merits, indeed, a word from the hounds would be essential, but short of that it is hoped that something has been accomplished in the following pages to show the Master as he sees himself and also as others see him. They've grown up listening to the nighttime songs of hounds in the pursuit of the wily ringtail. Chasing raccoon through darkened hills, Jacob teaches his sons the legends of their hometown and a deep respect for all woodland creatures. Hunting and the lessons taught keep the Ernst family together. And the brothers bond with their dogs-loyal to one another until the end. For this is Painted Post-a storied place where the lessons of life, love, and death play out beneath its mighty oaks. But worlds collide. Evil follows the Ernst family and their hounds into these mystical hills. The scourge of the illegal drug trade, coupled with the treachery of one of their own, leads to an inevitable showdown. Some will learn that not all of Painted Post's vivid tales are pure legend, and this rugged woodland will wield its own brutal justice. For in the darkest hollows, solid bonds are forged.

Book excerpt: A thrilling, harrowing novel of war, intrigue and dark, uncontrollable magic, Toll the Hounds is the new chapter in Erikson's monumental series - epic fantasy at its most imaginative and storytelling at its most exciting. In Darujhistan, the city of blue fire, it is said that love and death shall arrive dancing. It is summer and the heat is oppressive, but for the small round man in the faded red waistcoat, discomfiture is not just because of the sun. All is not well. Dire portents plague his nights and haunt the city streets like fiends of shadow. Assassins skulk in alleyways, but the quarry has turned and the hunters become the hunted. Hidden hands pluck the strings of tyranny like a fell chorus. While the bards sing their tragic tales, somewhere in the distance can be heard the baying of Hounds...And in the distant city of Black Coral, where rules Anomander Rake, Son of Darkness, ancient crimes awaken, intent on revenge. It seems Love and Death are indeed about to arrive...hand in hand, dancing. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: One man cannot take on an empire.Or rather, he can try-but it should come as no surprise when he's crushed by the vast powers arrayed against him. Caius Oppita knows this, but after what he's seen, it suits him better to go down fighting than to crawl on his hands and knees. The empire he's served faithfully since he was a boy now wants him dead, and the lover he thought he could trust has betrayed him in the worst possible way. Maybe Caius can't win the fight he's about to undertake, but he'll damn well drag the imperial family's corruption into the light of day if it kills him.And if the battle takes him to the same underbelly of the capital where his former lover fled after ripping Caius' world apart? Well, it won't be the first time this hardened general has engaged in combat on two fronts. Not all enemies are what they seem.Sometimes the course of a war can turn on the smallest thing.* * *Master of Hounds: Book 2 is the second installment in an M/M epic fantasy trilogy by USA Today bestseller R.
