Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Massachusetts Teacher, Vol. 5 The Massachusetts Teacher is conducted by a Board of Editors, who are appointed annually by the Massachusetts State Teachers' Association, of which body it is the responsible organ. It was established because it was believed that our profession needed a paper of its own. Teachers felt that a Teachers' journal was needed, - one which would come home directly to their own business and bosoms. They believed that such a publication might be made a powerful instrument in advancing the interests of education, and of elevating the profession of teaching. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the Moving School in Massachusetts The first four chapters - those which deal with the evolution of school control and of school support - may not seem to be logically connected with the subject proper. They are, in fact, an introduction to it, made necessary for the reasons that school control up to the present time has been considered as progressing during the seventeenth century from control of the many to con trol of the few, whereas the reverse is the truth; and also because no study has yet been made, and the results presented, of the subject of school support for this period. While there is a unity in the whole by reason of the fact that it was written from a single point of view - that of describing in a complete manner the origin of the moving school, yet the discussion of the reasons for its creation begins with Chapter V. The preceding chapters serve the purpose of paving the way for a satisfactory presenta tion of the subject proper as contained in the last six chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abstract of the Proceedings: Of the Massachusetts Teachers' Association, 1845-80 The Massachusetts Teachers' Association was organized in 1845. Its history is substantially embodied in the following abstract of its proceedings. In preparing this abstract, the committee to whom the work was assigned have aimed to record every important act of the Association; to give the names of all persons who have favored it with lectures, papers, or illustrative exercises, and the subjects thereof; to specify the topics of all the discussions and the persons who participated in them; and to furnish a complete list of the officers of the Association and their time of service, and of the editors of the Massachusetts Teacher. The limits necessarily assigned to this publication are such as to forbid all attempts to present an abstract of the discussions. Such an abstract would fill several volumes. The changes made from time to time in the Constitution of the Association have been stated in immediate connection with the original articles. Two of the changes are specially noteworthy, as having been the occasion of long-continued discussions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abstract of the Massachusetts School Returns: For 1839-40 Another very important requisite in a teacher is a skill in governing a school. Unless good order is kept in school, there can be but little improvement. This is a faculty, the deficiency of which can never be made up by the application of corporal punishment. Children will. Very soon learn whether order is to be observed or not. And since we have, in all our Common Schools, those who are incapable of governing themselves, they must be governed, or there is an end to the improvement of that school. Your committee feel, therefore, con strained to direct your attention to these qualifications in a teacher, because they feel that our schools have suffered in consequence of deficiencies in these particulars. They have called your attention to these particulars, in hope that the several districts would instruct their prudential committees to make due inquiries concerning the character of the individuals who apply for our schools helbra they employ them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of the High School in Massachusetts: Teachers College, Columbia University Contributions to Educations, No; 45 The high school in Massachusetts had its beginning in the third decade of the nineteenth century. Within that period fall the estab lishment of the English Classical (high) School of Boston in 1821, the founding of the Boston High School for Girls in 1826, and the passage of the act in 1827 which formed the basis of all subsequent legislation affecting the high school in Massachusetts. In a wider sense, however, we must trace the origin of the Massachusetts high school and secondary education in the nine teenth century back to an earlier period, and, to gain a conception of the meaning and extent of the change then brought about, we must examine the conditions prior to the nineteenth century and antecedent to the beginning of the high school movement proper. Such an examination will involve some consideration of the colonial Latin grammar school and of the academies which prae tically dominated secondary education at the beginning of the nineteenth century, together with a consideration of the public school system in general. N o exhaustive treatment of these movements can be attempted here, but sufficient attention must be given to them to afford a knowledge of the situation immedi ately preceding the period with which this discussion is concerned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Hand-Book: For the Institute and the Class Room In the preparation of this book it was no part of the author's aim to write merely that with which everybody would at once agree. In such a case there would be no necessity that it should be written. The world does not especially need to read the oft-told tale of that which it already believes. But free thought and free discussion are the soul of progress. Differences of opinion are the life of discussion, out of whose crucible must finally issue the pure gold of truth, the only Philosopher's Stone worthy of human seeking. If, therefore, what is here written shall serve to excite discussion, awaken interest, and quicken zeal in the great work of elevating the teachers of our country to that commanding position which they should ever be worthy to occupy in the public regard, its leading purpose will have been fully realized. There are two characters, one or the other of whom must in the future occupy a conspicuous place in public attention, the educator and the warrior. Either the ballot or the bullet, the pen or the sword, will eventually dominate the destinies of mankind.
