Book Synopsis Tear Off the Masks! by : Sheila Fitzpatrick
Download or read book Tear Off the Masks! written by Sheila Fitzpatrick and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When revolutions happen, they change the rules of everyday life--both the codified rules concerning the social and legal classifications of citizens and the unwritten rules about how individuals present themselves to others. This occurred in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, which laid the foundations of the Soviet state, and again in 1991, when that state collapsed. Tear Off the Masks! is about the remaking of identities in these times of upheaval. Sheila Fitzpatrick here brings together in a single volume years of distinguished work on how individuals literally constructed their autobiographies, defended them under challenge, attempted to edit the "file-selves" created by bureaucratic identity documentation, and denounced others for "masking" their true social identities. Marxist class-identity labels--"worker," "peasant," "intelligentsia," "bourgeois"--were of crucial importance to the Soviet state in the 1920s and 1930s, but it turned out that the determination of a person's class was much more complicated than anyone expected. This in turn left considerable scope for individual creativity and manipulation. Outright imposters, both criminal and political, also make their appearance in this book. The final chapter describes how, after decades of struggle to construct good Soviet socialist personae, Russians had to struggle to make themselves fit for the new, post-Soviet world in the 1990s--by "de-Sovietizing" themselves. Engaging in style and replete with colorful detail and characters drawn from a wealth of sources, Tear Off the Masks! offers unique insight into the elusive forms of self-presentation, masking, and unmasking that made up Soviet citizenship and continue to resonate in the post-Soviet world.

Book excerpt: Of this long-awaited sequel to "The Forever King", "Publishers Weekly" says "this narrative interweaves present-day events and flashbacks to Camelot, recasting many Arthurian elements into a mythology that appears new while managing to employ all the classic touchstones. With its high-minded themes and echoes of the metaphysical thrillers of Charles Williams, this satisfying sequel lives up to its popular predecessor".

Book Synopsis The Struggle for Justice and Truth by : Tomas Cudzis
Download or read book The Struggle for Justice and Truth written by Tomas Cudzis and published by Tomas Cudzis. This book was released on 2023-02-09 with total page 983 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of all four parts of The Struggle for Justice and Truth book series by Tomas Cudzis, a fan fiction work dedicated as a tribute to the Linkin Park music band, from which songs the author’s inspiration has come. The goal being, it should look like Linkin Park were making the soundtrack for the book, not the other way around. Note: This book only includes references to the songs that should be played with each section for an enhanced experience, It doesn’t contain any of the songs referenced in itself, and it’s purely optional for the reader to gain access to those songs at their own expense. As use of those songs is purely experimental, it doesn’t guarantee improved experience compared to merely reading this book, although test readers did find it most helpful. Synopsis: Tomas’s sense of inferiority since his childhood has forced him to transform himself physically, becoming the underground king of illegal MMA fights in the heart of Hong Kong. After an unfortunate incident involving the Triads, he is forced into hiding in the United States, where he is actively hunted by them and others. Realizing he has no other choice, he takes on the Triads by himself in his last attempt for freedom, or vengeance. To his surprise, he survives, with the help of a top-secret US agency, enlisting in their ranks and together taking on criminals considered to be untouchable. However, with the ever-increasing body count at Tomas’s hands, he realizes he can’t handle the emotional trauma and doesn’t like what he is turning into. Determined to break the chain and leave his old life behind, Tomas finds himself sucked right back into it every single time he tries, leaving him feeling hopeless fighting a fight that he considers pointless. “I don’t know. It can’t be outfought, it can’t be outdone, it can’t be outrun. It’s just the way it is. There is no justice, except the one that is paid for in blood or money. I don’t have money.” In his personal struggle for justice and truth, convinced that the current government is becoming more and more dystopian with every passing day, he pushes to find out the truth against all odds, in hopes that it will finally bring him inner peace stopping worldwide growing tyranny.
