Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1944, these speeches deserve study by contemporary students of leadership, media, and international relations. Written and delivered by the then Foreign Minister of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, they were broadcast over BBC radio as part of the Allied media campaign against the Nazis during the Second World War. Listening to them was punishable by death under Hitler's regime. Yet untold thousands of Czechoslovak citizens regularly risked their lives on Wednesday evenings to hear Jan Masaryk. From September 1939 through the end of the war, Masaryk was one of the wittiest and most popular voices on the air, hosting a program called Volá Londýn (London Calling). He evoked Jan Hus and the Good Soldier Švejk, recited poetry, told jokes, provided eyewitness reports of the bombing of London, news of battles in Europe and Africa, and of public opinion in the United States. His extraordinary broadcast marking the Jewish New Year 5704, in September of 1943, includes one of the first explicit references by an international leader to the extermination of the Jews. Masaryk's broadcasts were so treasured that after the war, a Czech collection of the talks sold out its 60,000-copy printing, followed by similar success in London. "Seven decades have come and gone since these speeches were first aired, but the fundamental message of respect and caring for one another — and of living in freedom — remains both timeless and timely." Madeleine K. Albright, U.S. Secretary of State, 1997-2001

A fascinating study that enhances our understanding of this tragic period." James R. Felak, University of Washington "The author has long experience with security police archives and brings together material never before presented in a joint analysis. The text will be very valuable to all who are interested in the operations of Soviet-style authorities and in secret police methods generally." Geoffrey Hosking, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London "This study is a meticulously researched and convincingly argued masterpiece. It is also immensely readable and full of fascinating depictions of the personalities involved. Book excerpt: "Jande?ková pulls back the curtain to give us a glimpse of the inner workings of Communist Czechoslovakias secret police in connection both with the false border operation Kamen and the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk. A fascinating study that enhances our understanding of this tragic period." James R. Felak, University of Washington "Václava Jande?ková's text is based on a great variety of sources, which are thoroughly and resourcefully interrogated and clearly presented. It is in two parts: the first investigates the Communist Czechoslovak security police operation to flush out potential troublemakers by luring them to a false frontier on the pretence of organising their escape to West Germany. The second is a searching re-examination of the murder of Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk in March 1948. The author has long experience with security police archives and brings together material never before presented in a joint analysis. The text will be very valuable to all who are interested in the operations of Soviet-style authorities and in secret police methods generally." Geoffrey Hosking, Emeritus Professor of Russian History, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London "With this book Václava Jande?ková emerges as a star among historians of Cold War intelligence operations. Combing her analytical skills with deep understanding of Czech history, she has mapped out the scandalous Operation KAMEN and its many dimensions in astonishing detail. This study is a meticulously researched and convincingly argued masterpiece. It is also immensely readable and full of fascinating depictions of the personalities involved. It is a marvelous piece of work, a major contribution to our understanding of the early postwar years of the Cold War. I cant recommend it highly enough." Igor Lukes, Pardee School of Global Studies, Boston University Václava Jande?ková is an independent researcher, a co-founder of the Association for Research of Communist Crimes, member of the International PEN Club (Czech Centre) and a graduate in international relations.

This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An English translation of a successful title by the first post-1989 Czech ambassador to Israel, Miloš Pojar. The book is a result of the author’s life-long interest in this difficult and taboo theme. Starting with the first publication of the samizdat collection, TGM and Our Present Day, Czech anti-Semitism has been newly researched in a broad context. This book presents a useful summary of Tomás Garrigue Masaryk’s stances from his writings and political activities, including a detailed description of the historic first visit of the head of the state to Palestine in 1927. The English edition contains a preface by Shlomo Avineri and a personal essay by Petr Pithart.
Book Synopsis The Masaryks: The Making of Czechoslovakia by : Zbyněk Zeman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this biography of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937), the founder of the Czechoslovak republic, and of his son Jan Masaryk (1886-1948), who became foreign minister in the Czechoslovak government-in-exile in London during World War II, the author retraces their lives against the dramatic background of the history of Central and Eastern Europe. “Zeman is sympathetic to his subjects but completely honest in presenting them as men, not myths.” — John C. Campbell, Foreign Affairs “Dr. Zeman draws an interesting portrait of [T.G. Masaryk] the ‘scholar President’, an individualistic, curiously apolitical and yet far-sighted figure... The author has written a sound biography, at its best in the descriptions of Masaryk’s attempts to found the new state.” — Lisanne Radice, International Affairs “Zeman’s portrait of the Masaryks is engagingly written and may be profitably read by the non-specialist.” — Victor S. Mamatey, The American Historical Review

Book excerpt: Berlin, 1948. Still occupied by the four Allied powers and largely in ruins, the city has become the cockpit of a new Cold War. The legacies of the war have become entangled in the new Soviet-American conflict, creating a world of bizarre and fleeting loyalties—a paradise for spies. As spring unfolds, a Western withdrawal looks increasingly likely. Berlin’s German inhabitants live in fear of the Soviet forces who occupy half the city, and whose legacy of violence has ripped apart many families. John Russell works for both Stalin's NKVD and the newly created CIA, trying his best to cut himself loose from both before his double-agency is discovered by either. As tensions between the great powers escalate, each passing day makes Russell’s position more treacherous. He and his Soviet liaison, Shchepkin, seek out one final operation—one piece of intelligence so damning it could silence the wrath of one nation and solicit the protection of the other. It will be the most dangerous task Russell has ever taken on, but one way or the other, it will be his last.
