Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marriages of the Bonapartes, Vol. 1 of 2 The various historians who have dealt with the first Napoleon have hardly paid sufficient attention to the matrimonial alliances by which he hoped to found and consolidate, not only an empire as large as that over which Charlemagne held sway, but several kingdoms in addition. From a very early age Napoleon looked upon marriage as a means of pushing his fortunes in the world; and if at one time he contemplated marrying a lady old enough to be his mother, did not a Duc d'Alencon, at the age of seventeen, venture over to England to pay his addresses to Queen Elizabeth, who was then in her thirty-sixth year? It is true that an objection was raised on the score of age; but a marriage with the Duc d'Anjou, who was only a year older than his brother, had been seriously entertained by the maiden queen. A perusal of the following pages will show how the matrimonial schemes of Napoleon ended, and what little solidity they possessed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From CNN’s official royal historian, a highly praised young author with a doctorate from Oxford University, comes the extraordinary rags-to-riches story of the woman who conquered Napoleon’s heart—and with it, an empire. Their love was legendary, their ambition flagrant and unashamed. Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife, Josephine, came to power during one of the most turbulent periods in the history of France. The story of the Corsican soldier’s incredible rise has been well documented. Now, in this spellbinding, luminous account, Kate Williams draws back the curtain on the woman who beguiled him: her humble origins, her exorbitant appetites, and the tragic turn of events that led to her undoing. Born Marie-Josèphe-Rose de Tascher de La Pagerie on the Caribbean island of Martinique, the woman Napoleon would later call Josephine was the ultimate survivor. She endured a loveless marriage to a French aristocrat—executed during the Reign of Terror—then barely escaped the guillotine blade herself. Her near-death experience only fueled Josephine’s ambition and heightened her determination to find a man who could finance and sustain her. Though no classic beauty, she quickly developed a reputation as one of the most desirable women on the continent. In 1795, she met Napoleon. The attraction was mutual, immediate, and intense. Theirs was an often-tumultuous union, roiled by their pursuit of other lovers but intensely focused on power and success. Josephine was Napoleon’s perfect consort and the object of national fascination. Together they conquered Europe. Their extravagance was unprecedented, even by the standards of Versailles. But she could not produce an heir. Sexual obsession brought them together, but cold biological truth tore them apart. Gripping in its immediacy, captivating in its detail, Ambition and Desire is a true tale of desire, heartbreak, and revolutionary turmoil, engagingly written by one of England’s most praised young historians. Kate Williams’s searing portrait of this alluring and complex woman will finally elevate Josephine Bonaparte to the historical prominence she deserves.

Why sound the alarm?--why sow the seeds of distrust and excite animosities? Is it a sure method of preserving peace, to abdicate the modest title of consul, and immediately assume one more pompous? Is it, moreover, consistent and prudent, while you are setting 'forth the causes of war, to labour to show that all power is now lodged in the hands of the conqueror of Marengo? that he is ready to. aggravate his provocations towards Germany, by seeking to demonstrate to her that all the strength will henceforth be on one side, and all the weakness on the other and that she will probably find herself without resources to sustain the conflict? Hear me further; You well know that true valour detests butchery as much as it loves glory;--does an enemy yield? She ceases to strike;--she covets not blood, but honour, and even her enemy becomes dear to her if victory has cost her a great effort."- He replied with ill-humour--for I began to embarrass him: --"As against the passions," said he, " what is mere gallantry without courage? It is their slave; courage is their master." This conversation was without any result. I saw quickly that it was against his views, and particularly when I spoke in favour of the French princes. Their return had become the more difficult that he was in possession of their throne. To excuse himself in a manner to those who could not reconcile the idea of his virtues with his enterprising character, he said, After the battle of Marengo was gained (it is known to whom it belonged), the First Consul, leaving his suite by themselves, went into one of those small houses which are built among the vines for the purpose of protecting them. He strode rapidly lengthwise and across the room, which was neither long...
