Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Optical Glass and of Optical Systems: A War-Time Problem In industries of a highly technical nature, such as the chemical dye industry and the optical glass and instrument industry, the Germans had established such effective control that at the beginning of the war we were seriously embarrassed because we did not manu facture these commodities, and did not know how to make them. The Germans had been at the task for more than a quarter century and had developed a personnel trained and competent for the tasks. Their best scientists and engineers had originated and followed through the factory processes and were thoroughly familiar with them; with us it was a serious question whether we would be able to accomplish anything adequate in time to be of service on the field of battle. The records show that in the short period of 19 months, we did accomplish much to overtake the decades of German experience. In certain instances, as in Optical glass and instruments, there has been developed in this country an industry which more than suffices for our own needs and which will render us independent of Europe if we so desire. Millions of miles of optical fiber carry voice and data signals around the world. Lasers are used in surgery of the retina, kidneys, and heart. New high-efficiency light sources promise dramatic reductions in electricity consumption. Night-vision equipment and satellite surveillance are changing how wars are fought. Industry uses optical methods in everything from the production of computer chips to the construction of tunnels. Harnessing Light surveys this multitude of applications, as well as the status of the optics industry and of research and education in optics, and identifies actions that could enhance the field's contributions to society and facilitate its continued technical development.

Book excerpt: For more than 400 years, optical glass has provided mankind with a window into both the hidden microcosm and vast outer cosmos of the known universe, transforming philosophy, science, and engineering through its visage and, thus, shaping modern civilization. Its high transmittance, homogeneity, and precisely defined light refraction properties are the preconditions for highly resolved true-color imaging, making it an intrinsic component of technology in general. From consumer products, such as cameras and binoculars, to microscopes and telescopes-the most essential tools of research in many fields-the role of optical glass is integral to the very foundations of modern science and industry.

Book excerpt: Optical components are essential key elements in modern engineering and everyday life. The education of skilled personnel and specialists in the fields of theoretical and practical optics manufacturing is of essential importance for next-generation technologies. Against this background, this book provides the basis for the education and advanced training of precision and ophthalmic optics technicians, craftsmen, and foremen, and it is an extensive reference work for students, academics, optical designers or shop managers, and production engineers. It not only covers particularly used and applied machines, working materials, testing procedures, and machining steps for classical optics manufacturing, but it also addresses the production and specification of optical glasses as well as unconventional production techniques and novel approaches. Optics Manufacturing: Components and Systems furthermore covers the basics of light propagation and provides an overview on optical materials and components; presents an introduction and explanation of the necessary considerations and procedures for the initial definition of manufacturing tolerances and the relevant industrial standards for optics manufacturing; and addresses the production of micro optics, the assembly of opto-mechanical setups and possible manufacturing errors, and the impact of the resulting inaccuracies. In order to allow fast and clear access to the most essential information, each chapter ends with a short summary of the most important aspects, including an explanation of relevant equations, symbols, and abbreviations. For further reading, extensive lists of references are also provided. Finally, exercises on the covered basic principles of optics, approaches, and techniques of optics manufacturing—including their corresponding detailed solutions—are found in the appendix.

The chalcogenides have been the subject of study around the world for many years, and continue to be an important area of research and development in infrared optics. Written by a renowned glass specialist with extensive experience working with chalcogenide glasses, Glasses for Infrared Optics includes discussions of: Chalcogenide glasses - a unique class of vitreous substances Optical properties of chalcogenide glasses Elaboration of commercial glasses Technological basics for manufacturing optical chalcogenide glasses The material presented in Glasses for Infrared Optics is based on research performed at the Vavilov State Optical Institute in Russia. This is the first and only work that reviews every aspect of chalcogenide glasses. The scope of this comprehensive book is unique, and the major portion of this work has never been published before in English.
