Book excerpt: Natural Therapy: A Manual of Physiotherapeutics and Climatology discusses natural ways of healing and treating certain diseases and disorders. The authors discuss the use of water in bath-treatments as used by John Smedley, Winternitz, or through methods known as "Kaltwasser Kuranstalten," or "Kneipp cure." The book explains the general principles of hydrotherapy or the systematic application of water at different temperatures in varying ways to the body surface. Water can have a therapeutic effect due to its temperature, volume, mechanical means, and chemical forms. The authors also discuss taking baths including general precautions (after physical exertion), techniques (arm, foot bath), use of drip sheet, and douches. Water in Nauheim baths are either naturally or artificial charged, in varying degrees, with carbonic acid gas, and mixed with small amounts of chloride and sulphate of soda. The bath is good for the circulatory system. The authors discuss other natural methods of treatment such as steam bath, massages, hydro-electric baths, and special diet cures. This book can be helpful for care givers, health workers, physical therapists, practioners of alternative or holistic medicine, and general readers who have an interest in natural treatment and healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Natural Therapy Some ten years ago the author conceived the idea of writing a book of this character. A commencement was then made, but owing to an unexpected change of environment and other circumstances, it was not proceeded with. During the past decade great progress has been made in methods of natural therapy, and particularly in the department of electrical treatment and electro-thermal methods. The author feels that the time has now arrived when there is a distinct want for a book on "Natural Therapy" in this country, and he ventures to hope that it may be welcomed by the medical profession. In the preparation of the work no attempt has been made to give a complete or exhaustive account of any of the departments dealt with, but the author has endeavoured to embody the chief points of interest and importance, briefly and succinctly, in such a manner as to awaken interest, and lead to further study and consideration of the methods treated of on the part of the reader. A bibliography has been added at the end of the book, and to the authors of many of the volumes therein mentioned the author herewith gratefully acknowledges his obligations. Throughout the text, footnotes, marginal references, and acknowledgments have been intentionally avoided, as embarrassing to the reader when frequently employed. The name of an authority is frequently mentioned in brackets. In the section on hydrotherapeutics it is difficult to mention any ascertained physiological fact which we do not owe to the work of Winternitz or Kellogg, and their names occur frequently. The encouragement extended to the author on all hands when help in the production of the book was solicited has been most gratifying. Book excerpt: More and more patients with chronic pain and other disorders are relying on neural therapy - a treatment concept based on employing the properties of local anesthetics to regulate disorders of the autonomic system - to alleviate their symptoms. Yet there are precious few spezialized, didactic resources for medical practitioners interested in learning about this highly effective therapeutic alternative. The Manual of Neural Therapy According to Huneke offers accessible, practical information on all aspects of neural therapy as it is practiced today. Designed for use in the classroom and in the clinic, this illustrated manual comprises three sections:- Theory and Practice of neural therapy according to Huneke -- including detailed definitions of all terminology; discussions of experiments, successes, and failures of neural therapy; the scientific theory behind segmental therapy and interference fields; and practical applications.- Encyclopedia of neural therapy -- featuring an encyclopedia of conditions and indications in every anatomic region, as well as numerous case studies. - Techniques of neural therapy -- a comprehensive, substantially illustrated list of injection procedures, including detailed guidance on insertion points, direction, and depth. Distilling decades of clinical research and hands-on experience, this unique book is essential reading for practitioners of all disciplines interested in exploring how contemporary neural therapy can complement and enhance the way they practice medicine.

Book excerpt: The Science and Clinical Application of Manual Therapy is a multi-disciplinary, international reference book based on work by the top basic science researchers and clinical researchers in the area of Manual Therapy and Manual Medicine (MT/MM). The first book to bring together research on the benefits of MT/MM beyond the known effects on musculoskeletal disorders, the volume presents evidence of the benefit of MT/MM in treating systemic disorders. This book makes a powerful case for how MT/MM affects the central nervous system and the autonomic effector systems (the circulatory, respiratory, gastrointestinal systems, and pelvic organs) which impact on a person’s health. The volume covers how MT/MM works and details the conditions – such as chronic skeletal and visceral pain diseases, asthma, pneumonia, and cardiovascular deregulation – that can benefit from it. Longstanding theoretical models of MT/MM mechanisms are critically assessed in the light of current understanding of physiological and neurophysiological function, and the influences of psychological and cortical processes on the effects of MT/MM are explored. The book, which is divided into four main sections, will appeal to osteopathic physicians, osteopaths, chiropractors, physical therapists and massage therapists, as well as all body workers/health practitioners who use their hands in health care. It will be of particular value to all practitioners involved in treatment of chronic pain disorders as well as those involved in basic and clinical research in this field. Authored by the leading multidisciplinary basic science and clinical researchers from throughout the world Describes research confirming benefit of MT for musculoskeletal disorders (which helps provide a rational for greater utilization of manual therapy and reimbursement for this healthcare service) Presents the latest findings on the beneficial effect of MT on systemic disorders including asthma, pneumonia, otitis media, heart rate dysfunction and GI disturbance Critically assesses longstanding theoretical models of MT/MM mechanisms with respect to the current understanding of physiological and neurophysiological function Explores the influences of psychological and cortical processes on the effects of MT/MM, including the effect of placebo Uniquely presents research findings from all the manual therapy professions and scientists making the case for the benefits of MT The symposium from which the book was derived was supported by the NIH National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine
