Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manifesto of Islam, an Exposition of Islam as the Inevitable World Ideology, of the Future The present crisis in world affairs, threatening the total collapse of civilization and even the total extinction of the human rice, is forcing mankind to search for a remedy. Of late their interest in religion has suddenly revived. Is religion, properly understood, the only refuge of mankind from these impending calamities! They arc searching for an answer to this question. On the other hand the Muslims arc claiming openly and repeatedly before the whole world that Islam is the only ideology that can permanently unite the human race, establish a lasting peace on earth and carry man to that highest stage of his mental, moral, material and spiritual evolution of which there is a promise in the potentialities of his nature. This devolves upon the Muslims the responsibility to tell the world what Islam is, how it differs from other religions, what are the intellectual foundations of its claims, what arc its aims and objects and how it intends to realize them. "The Manifesto of Islam" is an endeavour to provide a brief answer to these questions. The word "manifesto" has been generally used for a declaration, by a sovereign, a state or a body of individuals, making known past actions and motives of actions announced as forthcoming. But since the appearance, a century ago, of the 'Communists Manifesto' as an instrument of world-wide propagation of Communism leading ultimately to the emergence of that ideology as a great political power in the world - this word has acquired a new significance, as a statement setting forth the historical bases, the fundamental principles and the expected achievements of an ideology demanding a world-wide recognition. I am using the word only in this latter sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is more than a book; it is a manifesto. It advocates a project through which participants will launch an American renaissance movement inspired by a new, revitalized, and uniquely American expression of Islam. This book is the product of more than twenty years of extensive research and interaction with communities across America. That background preparation has given the author, Dr. Souheil Ghannouchi, a deep understanding of Islam, of history, and of the reality in which all Americans (including Muslim Americans) live. Additionally, the text benefits from Dr. Ghannouchis careful study and observation of world events, and from his comprehension of the universal rules that govern the rise and fall of both nations and movements. This volume was originally meant to be the intellectual foundation for a renaissance movement for all Americans, and it was to be aimed at reviving the American Dream and restoring Americas fundamental values based on the founding fathers vision. The idea of recruiting all Americans to the task was inspired by serious concerns about Americas current situation and future risks, and by a firm belief that America can and should be the worlds foremost champion for compassion, peace, justice, and prosperity. At the same time, the book was intended to spearhead the renaissance of the Muslim American community so that it would begin to play a meaningful role in making the needed change in America. However, even though both the entire country and, more specifically, the Muslim community are in dire need of fundamental change, it became clear to the author that the two objectives could not be adequately advocated with one publication. Thus, this book focuses mainly on Muslim Americans, and it constitutes a manifesto for a renaissance in the American Muslim community and a blueprint for our full integration into the greater American society. Stemming from the authors firm conviction that both our nation and our community are experiencing a severe crisis, this book is prompted by his grave concern for the future as well as his unshakable resolve to significantly contribute towards the fundamental change that is needed right now within our society. His concerns and his resolve are shared by other Muslim Americans who will join in launching this project. We invite all Americans to participate. Even though Islam and Muslims have been present in the U.S. in one form or another for a long time, the Muslim American community is still regarded as a newcomer. One reason is that the connections with the greater American society have been weak and complicated. The Nation of Islam, which is largely comprised of United States-born African American Muslims, is widely viewed as a Black nationalist movement rather than an Islamic phenomenon. And even though immigrant Muslims began to establish Islamic centers as early as the beginning of the 20th century and also despite the establishment of the first chapter of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) in 1963 the organized presence of orthodox Islam did not truly emerge in America until the 1970s. The real proliferation of mosques, schools, and Islamic organizations took place as recently as the 80s and 90s. Furthermore, the integration of the Muslim American community into the greater American society stalled because of some typical factors that were exacerbated by religious and political issues and by some domestic and global events. As a result, the Muslim community was plunged into a deep crisis and became, for other Americans, a puzzle and a source of major challenge, especially after the 9/11 catastrophe. A huge divide was established between the community and American society at large, and a vicious action-reaction cycle is only reinforcing the divide and widening the gap. Moreover, the attempts at healing undertaken by both sides are not really improving the situation because the efforts made are too few and too i

Now, in this brilliant portrait of Islam today-- and tomorrow-- he draws on a lifetime of thought and research to provide an accurate, richly nuanced, and revelatory account of the fastest growing religion in the world. Here Esposito explores the major questions and issues that face Islam in the 21st century and that will deeply affect global politics: Is Islam compatible with modern notions of democracy, rule of law, gender equality, and human rights? How representative and widespread is Islamic fundamentalism and the threat of global terrorism? Can Muslim minority communities be loyal citizens in America and Europe? In the midst of these questions Esposito places an important emphasis on the issue of Islamophobia, the threat it poses, and its vast impact on politics and society in the US and Europe. He also turns the mirror on the US and Europe and paints a revealing portrait of how we appear to Muslims. Recent decades have brought extraordinary changes in the Muslim world, and in addressing these issues, Esposito paints a complex picture of Islam in all its diversity--a picture of urgent importance as we face the challenges of the coming century.

He concludes with an overview of critical debates on important contemporary issues such as gender and veiling, state politics, and science and religion.

This book was released on 2002-12-30 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today the world stands in an imperative need for a code of universal teachings, such as Islam (Peace). It is our foremost duty to depict the teachings of Islam in its true perspective. In Europe, America, and even in India, there are still prevalent gross misconceptions and wrong notions about Islam and also about the Holy Prophet of Islam. This book contains comments, quotations, and writings from hundreds of eminent scholars, writers, and thinkers of the Non-Muslim world to show the real truth about Islam and its Prophet. As an American lady converted to Islam remarked, "The Muslims of to-day do not know the real meaning of Islam and the work life, example and precepts of their Prophet. Most of the to-day Muslims are living in gross ignorance of the true teachings of Islam." This book is needed at this juncture of the World when it is torn into blocks by ideologies and there is an impending danger of the annihilation of the whole human race and its beautiful civilization by nuclear, chemical, and other weapons of mass destruction. Today a nations status and existence should depend on superior ideology and not on arms and ammunition. Islam alone can supply this all-comprehensive superior ideology to be applied to the pressing problems of the present day World. Absolute faith in one and only one humanity earnestly taught by Islam can alone save the World and the modern civilization from degradation, destruction, and utter ruination. Islam and its holy prophet have a message to the whole mankind. The message is: The world in which we have our beings does not belong to us. It is a God's trust to men and women. All the powers, all the greatness that mankind posses should be ever used, employed as God's trust and according to this law and commandments. Men and women must not think themselves as master of all things and should not use them arbitrarily. They must think themselves as divine instruments to carry out God's trust faithfully and justly. Islam enjoys one universal brotherhood of all human beings and one humanity. This is what the present enlightened and think World is seeking as a new comradeship, a universal fellowship, a World community, a deeper understanding and peace above all. Another purpose of this book is to present Europe and America and to the Non-Muslim world a real and true picture of Islam and its Holy Prophet as told by their own people in order to remove them from the mind of the Western people of these prejudiced wrong notions, erroneous biases, and obsession against Islam and its founder. The liberal attitude of Islam to freedom of belief and thought is one of the fundamental tenets of Islam which established rights of human beings more than fourteen hundred years ago as part of creed as a universal message to humanity. This message is of utmost importance to the present state of human development. If the present day Muslims can intelligently appreciate the message of Islam and truly act thereupon, they would be able to regain confidence in themselves and contribute effectively to the peace and happiness of mankind. This is another purpose of this book. If the Western and Non-Muslim people could appreciate the teachings of Islam and its Holy Prophet, they would see the truth and would be glad to cooperate with the Muslims in the up-hill task of making this World a heaven for peaceful, prosperous, and brotherly living and for that noble purpose to form a universal brotherhood of all mankind. I express my obligation and gratitude to those from whose books and writings quotations have been made.

Book excerpt: Tariq Ramadan, one of Europe's leading thinkers and one of Islam's most innovative and important voices, explores in this volume what it means to be a Western Muslim, addressing a topic that is vitally important to the futures of both Islam and the West. Ramadan claims that a silent revolution is sweeping Islamic communities in the West, as Muslims actively seek ways to live in harmony with their faith within a Western context. French, English, German, and American Muslims--women as well as men--are reshaping their religion into one that is faithful to the principles of Islam, dressed in European and American cultures, and definitively rooted in Western societies.

Book excerpt: Mr. Fuller has attempted to fill the gap in our understanding of the diversity of political Islam and its place in world politics. It is a central thesis of his work that political Islam is not an exotic and distant phenomenon but can be understood in the context of the universal struggle by both liberals and authoritarians as they try to make sense of a troubling and rapidly modernizing world. Mr. Fuller sees political Islam as the one organizing principle that pervades the daily life in the Muslim world more profoundly than any other single ideological or conceptual force in that society. Therefore, one could argue that political Islam is also part of a drive to restore the identity and dignity of a world where a once glorious past has somehow led many to see only a bleak and future-less present.
