Book excerpt: Drawing on a mixture of theory, cases, and interviews, Startups and Crisis Management provides a valuable overview of how new ventures fared in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. It then considers the wider lessons for startups operating in times of crisis and adjusting to the ‘new normal’. The macroeconomic shocks of rising unemployment, lockdowns, and remote working have impacted the entrepreneurial ecosystem and raised questions about how startups can survive, adjust, and thrive once more. This book analyses the reciprocal relationship between startups and their ecosystems, using theoretical lenses such as push and pull factors, necessity entrepreneurship, networking, and embeddedness. Each chapter contains case studies based on interviews with individuals from startups around the world, exploring how real-life firms reacted to the coronavirus crisis. This illuminating text will be a useful resource for modules exploring startups during times of crisis, and courses on entrepreneurship and crisis management more broadly.

Book excerpt: As the Internet has reshaped the way we communicate, people’s reading has become more fragmented and attention has been directed to a more concise and general form of language that outlines the most important information. This language of the internet, a language system that concentrates on the content of events and public emotions, has emerged and received wide currency. This monograph is one of the first books to examine the language of the internet in the Chinese context. By analysing content and discourse, the author examines Chinese website buzzwords since 2010. She reveals the mechanisms of generation, the cultural nature and political characteristics of the network language, analyzes the causes of its emergence and popularity, and highlights its social and academic significance. Meanwhile, she argues that research in the area is essentially interdisciplinary, involving not only perspectives from Journalism and Communication Studies, but also Philosophy, Culture, Linguistics and Sociology. Students and scholars of Communication Studies and Journalism, as well as Culture Studies should be greatly interested in this title.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of crisis management shows that companies embark on particular strategies in response to crisis. So why are some companies’ crisis communication strategies successful, while others are not? The purpose of this book is to broaden the existing knowledge of crisis response strategies by focusing on corporate identity as one of the factors that is most likely to influence their choice. Drawing upon insights from the sensemaking and chaos theories, as well as traditional and alternative, non-European, approaches to strategy formation, Olga Bloch contends that there is a reciprocal relationship between corporate identity and crisis response strategies. This relationship is examined on the example of Toyota Motor Corporation’s communication in response to a crisis caused by a series of recalls of its vehicles in 2009-2010.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market failure at medium intervals is inevitable in a capitalist economy. Such failures may not be seriously seen in the short run because market adjusts demand through hoarding of inventory or import of required goods and services. The market also adjusts demand in the long run through expansion of concerned industrial output and also by the entry of new firms. The crucial variable is price which also adjusts the commodity and the labor market. The problem comes when there are issues of overproduction, over capacity utilization of plants, over liquidation and excess supply of money, change in demand because of change in tastes and habits of consumers, households and the public. All these create knife edge disturbances in the economy. As a consequence they need adjustment through some variables such as employment and growth of population, saving propensity, technology, exhaustion of existing inventory, monetary and fiscal balancing. In this volume an attempt has been made to appraise the working of a market economy where short term disturbances may occur, market efficiency reduces, recessionary cycle emerges and after certain fundamental measures the market recovers. Starting with a brief recent history of the crisis and the recession, discussions in this volume turn to how deliberations in macroeconomics yield implications for specific policies, some of which have been tried and others still to be tested. Further in the volume we propose policies necessary for efficient regulation of the economic system, and give a brief assessment of the extent to which global policy coordination has been mulled in policy circles even if these are not seriously practiced.

Book excerpt: The day after the epidemic broke out in Wuhan, Chinese people in France are already busy sending masks across borders and sharing media information; at the same time, a significant number of Chinese people are victims of racist attacks, insults and discrimination in France. Based on both quantitative and qualitative empirical data, this book reveals the new dynamics and interactions generated by the Covid-19 pandemic not only between different sub-groups of Chinese in France, but also between ethnic Chinese and their both countries: China and France. Mutual aid, local or transnational solidarity, inclusion initiatives, like any act of exclusion and hostility, invite you to question the essence of humanity in transnational settings, beyond the racialization of the Covid-19 virus.

Book excerpt: This volume develops a theoretical framework for the modelling of meaning-making and cultural processes as crucial to the scientific study of contemporary complex societies. It focuses on the methodological and empirical aspects of the analysis of culture and its dynamics that could be applied to policymaking and to the understanding of social phenomena. It covers culture-based segmentation, ad hoc survey instruments like the VOC and PROSERV questionnaires, discourse flow analysis, the Homogenization of Classification Functions Measurement, and others. It also presents a detailed discussion of the methodology of cultural analysis in contexts of health and education. The volume showcases a top-down approach by including quantitative methods and/or automatized or semi-automatized procedures, and at the same time supports a hermeneutic, bottom-up, abductive approach, focused on the situated dynamics of meaning-making. It provides insights from cultural studies, social statistics, social policy, and research methodology in the social sciences. This is a useful resource for academics involved in studying cultural dynamics and for policy-oriented researchers and decision-makers who are interested in cultural dimensions of the design, implementation and reception of public policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic function of companies is to add value to society. Profits are a means to an end, not an end in itself. The ability of companies to innovate, scale and invest provides them with a powerful base for positive change. But companies are also criticized for not contributing sufficiently to society’s grand challenges. An increasingly VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world creates serious governance gaps that not only require new ways of regulation, but also new ways of doing business. Can companies effectively contribute to sustainable development and confront society’s systemic challenges? Arguably the most important frame to drive this ambition was introduced and unanimously adopted in 2015: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDG-agenda not only defines a holistic set of global goals and targets, but also foundational principles to guide meaningful action to their achievement by 2030. Multinational companies have signed up to the SDGs as the world’s long-term business plan. Realizing the SDGs provides a yearly $12 trillion investment and growth opportunity, while creating hundreds of millions of jobs in the process. But progress is too slow – witnessing society’s inability to deal with pressing human, ecological, economic and health crises – whilst the vast potential for societal value creation remains underutilized. This book provides a timely account of the systemic, strategic and operational challenges that need to be addressed to enhance the effectiveness of corporate involvement in society, by using the SDGs as the leading principles-based framework for actionable, powerful and transformative change. Principles of Sustainable Business is written for graduate and postgraduate (executive) students, policymakers and business professionals who want to understand the complex challenges of global sustainability. It shows how companies can design and implement SDG-relevant strategies at three levels: the macro level, to assess whether the SDGs present wicked problems or opportunities; the micro level, to develop and operationalize innovative business models, design new business cases and navigate organizational transition trajectories; and the meso level, to develop fit-for-purpose cross-sector partnering strategies. Principles of Sustainable Business presents innovative tools embedded in a coherent sequence of analytical frameworks that can be applied in courses for students, be put into practice by business professionals and used by action researchers to help companies contribute to the Decade of Action.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the market issues facing Asian industrialization and the possibility, feasibility, and sustainability of China integrating the Asian economics. How China's rise affects Asian market and the economic relation between China and other Asian economies? The book looks into this issue from market and regional perspectives and concludes that: Asian industrialization including China makes the unified regional market as the common goal of Asian economies; the integration of Asian markets is also a key strategy for China in the next 5-10 years; China may become a major player or even a leader in integrating regional markets; however, it will be a longtime process depending on China's economic strength in the future.

Book excerpt: A "riveting and illuminating" Bill Gates Summer Reading pick about how and why some nations recover from trauma and others don't (Yuval Noah Harari), by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the landmark bestseller Guns, Germs, and Steel. In his international bestsellers Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse, Jared Diamond transformed our understanding of what makes civilizations rise and fall. Now, in his third book in this monumental trilogy, he reveals how successful nations recover from crises while adopting selective changes -- a coping mechanism more commonly associated with individuals recovering from personal crises. Diamond compares how six countries have survived recent upheavals -- ranging from the forced opening of Japan by U.S. Commodore Perry's fleet, to the Soviet Union's attack on Finland, to a murderous coup or countercoup in Chile and Indonesia, to the transformations of Germany and Austria after World War Two. Because Diamond has lived and spoken the language in five of these six countries, he can present gut-wrenching histories experienced firsthand. These nations coped, to varying degrees, through mechanisms such as acknowledgment of responsibility, painfully honest self-appraisal, and learning from models of other nations. Looking to the future, Diamond examines whether the United States, Japan, and the whole world are successfully coping with the grave crises they currently face. Can we learn from lessons of the past? Adding a psychological dimension to the in-depth history, geography, biology, and anthropology that mark all of Diamond's books, Upheaval reveals factors influencing how both whole nations and individual people can respond to big challenges. The result is a book epic in scope, but also his most personal yet.
