Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of an Oration This manual is the outgrowth of nearly twenty years' experience in teaching rhetoric, in its various forms and applications, to successive classes of college students. Much of it was given originally as informal and unwritten lectures to classes in oratorical composition. Later these lectures were committed to writing for the purpose of making them more useful to my pupils. It is hoped that the informal style and methods of the classroom will not detract from the usefulness of the book. The aim of the following pages is preeminently practical. Their purpose is to present as clearly and definitely as may be the distinctions between the oration and other forms of discourse, and to set forth concretely and specifically the fundamental methods that must be pursued by him who would attain success in oratorical composition. No attempt is made to teach the higher and finer forms of oratorical style. What is the use of trying to teach in a book what can not be taught or learned, in any large and satisfying measure, in the classroom or from a book? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Press and the Stage: An Oration The position I assume is that the newspaper press has practically displaced the public in the exercise of judgment and the formation of the stage; that in ac cepting this ofice it has incurred its responsibilities; that this service of opinions to the public has paralyzed the freedom and strength of public judgment that actors seek to occupy high places by force of press advertise ment that the journalist, as a rule, is incompetent as a specialist in dramatic afi'airs, and encourages a trivial kind of drama and bujfoonery that the few journalists conspicuous by their capacity are too few to make head against this influence, and protest vainly, while the tor rent of ribaldry and charlatanism sweeps into bathos, and imposture sits on the dramatic throne. And of this state of things no great drama, no great actor, can possi bly come, and none has come - not one. Burlesque and so ciety melodrama monopolize the stage. So since 1850 not a single work of any enduring life has been added to dra matic literature: the age is barren. These are a few of the results I attribute largely to the agency of the press. And was afterwards included in the author's volume entitled Atlantic Essays. Teachers have several times urged that it should be separately printed as a little manual of literary composition; and I have indeed seen it used for that purpose in a college class-room. Now that Similar suggestions are beginning to be made as to the other brief essay, Hints on Speech making, it has seemed well to present the two together in a small volume. This is because figures of speech are not about hypothetical structures in things, but about real potentialities within language and within ourselves. The "figurings" of speech reveal the apparently limitless plastic

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of Lord Brougham's Translation of the Oration of Demosthenes on the Crown As, then, Lord Brougham has thought fit to publish his translation of the oration upon the Crown, when, according to honest Dogberry's phrase, there was no need of such vanity, let us see what are the reasons, which he openly avows as his motives for making this experiment, not on a vile substance, but on two such noble languages as the Greek and our own. Accord ing to his preface he had repeatedly formed and abandoned his intention of transferring this oration into our Saxon tongue. In 1812 he communicated his ideas on the subject to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Oration Delivered in Person Hall, Chapel Hill: On the 27th June, 1827, the Day Previous to the Commencement, Under the Appointment of the Dialectic Society The Literary Societies of this Institution, have resolved that an Address be delivered before them annually by some one of their members. This resolution, if carried into effect in the spirit in which it has been adopted, will be creditable to the Societies and favourable to the general Literature of the State. It is now more than thirty years since these Societies were established, and all the alumni of this University have been members of one or the other of them. Upon these alumni and upon others who shall go forth from this University, our hopes must chiefly rest for improvement in our literary character; and their zeal for such improvement cannot fail to be excited by being annually called together, and one of them selected to deliver a public discourse upon the progress and state of our literature, or some subject connected therewith. The Societies have conferred on me an unmerited honour by ap pointing me to deliver the first of these discourses. I accepted the appointment with pride, as it was an evidence of their esteem; yet with humility, from a conviction of my inability to meet public expectation an inability of which I am conscious at all times, but particularly so after a painful and tedious illness. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oration, Delivered Before the Few and Phi Gamma Socities, of Emory College It is objected that our slaves are debarred educational advantages. The objection is well taken, but is without great force their station m society makes education neither necessary nor useful, besides it comes with a bad grace from England - eight-tenths of whose pooulation have been de barred them by causes stronger than law, and if they could by any means obtain them, it is difficult to show the advantages of education to English laborers, who are doomed to toil twelve hours a day for a money compensation inadequate to supply their lowest physical wants. We are reproached that the marriage relation is neither recognised nor protected by law. This reproach is not wholly unjust, this is an evil not yet remedied by law, but marriage is not inconsistent with the institution of slavery as it exists among us, and the objection, therefore, lies rather to an incident than to the essence of the system. But even in this we have deprived the slave of no pre-existing right. We found the race without any knowledge of, or regard for the institution of marriage, and we are reproached for not having as yet, secured that and all other blessings of civilization. The separation of families is much relied on by the abolitionists in Europe and America. Some of the slaveholding states have already made partial provision against this evil, and all of them may do so; but the objection is far more formidable in theory than practice, even without legislative interposition.
