Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of an Englishman The dark young man who had just come out of Holy-well Street, a little uncertain, as if he had lost his way, crossed the Strand with hesitation. He drew back as some hansoms came careering towards him, made as if to return to the pavement, then ran across to St. Clement Dane's. He paused awhile on the island, looked at the faintly red sky over the Cecil. There was dubiousness in his movements, the dubiousness of the stranger in a large town, who is anxious to find his way and, because of his pride, reluctant to ask it; there was interest too, the stranger's revealing interest in houses with unfamiliar faces, in the traffic which in foreign lands so perversely clings to the wrong side of the street. At last he seemed to muster resolution as he turned eastwards. Some minutes had elapsed since the booming of the quarter from the bells of the nearest church, and as the young man stopped again to look at the Griffin, he seemed to listen to the endless confirmation of the surrounding chimes. They came muffled and faint after their long journey from St. Paul's and Westminster, shrill from St. Dunstan's and the Chapel Royal; the chimes seemed crisp and aloof, detached in aristocratic fashion from the rumble of the omnibuses and the sharper clip-trop-trop of the cab horses. The dark young man walked slowly, his eyes and ears very aware of all this unfamiliarity and its intimations of unpenetrated mysteries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of English This little work was announced as in preparation some years ago, but illness compelled me to lay it aside when only a few pages had been written, and since then my health has seldom permitted me to attempt any work in addition to my daily task as one of the editors of the Oxford English Dz'ctz'onai. Some of the faults of this volume may be due to the desultory manner in which it has been composed; but, on the other hand, the length of time that has elapsed since it was first planned has given me opportunity for more care ful consideration of difficult points. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Book excerpt: A history of the common people and the Industrial Revolution: “A true masterpiece” and one of the Modern Library’s 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the twentieth century (Tribune). During the formative years of the Industrial Revolution, English workers and artisans claimed a place in society that would shape the following centuries. But the capitalist elite did not form the working class—the workers shaped their own creations, developing a shared identity in the process. Despite their lack of power and the indignity forced upon them by the upper classes, the working class emerged as England’s greatest cultural and political force. Crucial to contemporary trends in all aspects of society, at the turn of the nineteenth century, these workers united into the class that we recognize all across the Western world today. E. P. Thompson’s magnum opus, The Making of the English Working Class defined early twentieth-century English social and economic history, leading many to consider him Britain’s greatest postwar historian. Its publication in 1963 was highly controversial in academia, but the work has become a seminal text on the history of the working class. It remains incredibly relevant to the social and economic issues of current times, with the Guardian saying upon the book’s fiftieth anniversary that it “continues to delight and inspire new readers.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of English Literature Each chapter marks a chronological advance on the preceding chapter, except in the last book. There, for reasons suggested in the text, the three chapters deal with three separate departments of the literature of a single period - prose, the novel, and poetry. The titles of the various books and chapters are in harmony With the pur pose to make the volume a discussion of literature and literary movements rather than of general English history. Various helps to more extended study are given in an Appendix, where they may be easily referred to in con nection with the treatment of each period, but where they will not interfere with the continuous reading of the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the English Nation There are so many School Histories of England already in existence, that it may perhaps seem presumptuous on the part of the authors of this series to add six volumes more to the number. But they have their defence: the Oxford Manuals of English History are intended to serve a particular purpose. There are several good general histories already in use, and there are a considerable number of scattered 'epochs' or 'periods'. But there seems still to be room for a set of books which shall combine the virtues of both these classes. Schools often wish to take up only a certain portion of the history of England, and find one of the large general histories too bulky for their use. On the other hand, if they employ one of the isolated 'epochs' to which allusion has been made, they find in most cases that there is no succeeding work on the same scale and lines from which the scholar can continue his study and pass on to the next period, without a break in the continuity of his knowledge. The object of the present series is to provide a set of historical manuals of a' convenient size, and at a very moderate price. Each part is complete in itself, but as the volumes will be carefully fitted on to each other, so that the whole form together a single continuous history of England, it will be possible to use any two or more of them in successive terms or years at the option of the instructor. They are kept carefully to the same scale, and the editor has done his best to put before the various authors the necessity of a uniform method of treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Englishman's Castle An Englishman's house is his castle, and although the outworks may be crumpled like tissue paper as soon as he is in Open conflict with society, so long as he keeps on the windy side of the law he possesses an impregnable fortress. In the garrison's 1nterest and our own we need permission to enter the ques tion is, what shall we pay? We certainly should make our utmost endeavour to Offer the minimum bribe, but in the existing state of affairs some bribery is inevitable. One thing strongly in favour Of the district nurse is, that there is rarely any real need for her to give material aid. When patients have said to me, 'i s'pose you 've brought all as you 'll want, nurse 2 or, I should think as the doctor won't want nothing but what he brings along with him 2 my usual reply was, I have brought you my ten fingers. It is astonishing how much they can do when they are supplied with the wherewithal.' And then, in the tones of a person parting with a trade secret as a rare personal favour, I would tell them what was needed, where it could be bought or hired, and how much it would cost. My hearers stared and laughed, but seldom indeed did they fail to produce all that was necessary. Collecting implements for the doctor's use sometimes caused a greater struggle. Half an hour before a critical operation on his wife, a man refused me the use Of an absolutely indispen sable basin because the fowls has got to be fed and in similar circumstances an elderly woman declined to supply me with boiling water because the gudeman must have his dinner.' Incidents like these are exceptional, but they have to be faced. Nor is a nurse welcome in every home. I have sometimes, at the urgent request Of a medical man, visited a house as many as six times before gaining admittance, and even then it has been another fort night before I have been allowed to perform any nursing duties. But - for my encouragement - how Often I found the entree remorselessly refused to other workers! One day, while attending to a woman who was seriously ill, I heard a constant rapping at the front door. It would have been against all etiquette for me to Offer to go and see what was wanted, but when I observed that the patient was getting nervous and worried by the sound, I went to look for the husband, who had been requested to remain within call. I found him in the backyard, squeezed into the only corner which was not easily visible from the road. There is a lady knocking at the door.' NO response. I think it is Mrs. The vicar's wife.' Lerrer knock, then! He replied valiantly, I 'm not a tome. When the missus is about, she can do 's she like.' In another case a district visitor called time after time at a house, leaving and fetching tracts and magazines, but never receiving more than the curtest of greetings. One day she was welcomed with a beaming smile. Come right in, m'm. I 'm real glad to see you. I was hoping you 'd be round our way.' She had hardly time to renew her faith in copy-book maxims as to the value of perseverance, when the woman added cheerfully, Two Of the children 's down with the scarlack fever. I 'd like for you to look at them.' The visitor was a married woman with young children of her own, and hastily purchased the right to decline this privilege.
