Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maiolica of Mexico Although the wares here treated are more of the na ture of the stanniferous faience of Holland, France and Germany than of the maiolica of Italy, and will therefore by some authorities be considered as not entitled to classi fication with true maiolica, the term has been used here for the reason that the ware is undoubtedly an offshoot of the maiolica of Spain, which re ects the art of the Italian potters. While the enameled ware of Mexico was never lustered like the Italian and hispano-moresque, and was not coated with a wash of lead glaze to impart brilliancy, it nevertheless possesses many of the characteristics of both. The writer takes pleasure in acknowledging his indebt edness to Schor Enrique L. Ventosa, of Puebla, and to Mrs. Zelia Nuttall, of Coyoacan, for valuable assistance in his investigations in Mexico; to Mr. Albert Pepper, and M. Gaston de Ramaix, Secretary of the Belgium Legation, both of the City of Mexico, and to Dr. Wilhelm Bauer, of Tacubaya, for photographs of important examples of Mexi can maiolica in private hands; to Rev. Francis S. Borton, of Puebla, for his researches among the early publications of Mexico and the manuscript records of the city of Puebla, through which many of the facts set forth in the following pages have been obtained; and finally to Mr. Albert H. Pitkin, of Hartford, who accompanied the author to Mex ico, for invaluable advice and assistance in securing ex amples of the ware for the Museum collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexican Maiolica: In the Collection of the Hispanic Society of America The earliest inspiration for the Mexican maiolists was the blue and white ware of Talavera de la Reyna, Spain, which began to appear in Mexico late in the sixteenth century. The Spanish influence is strongly marked in those pieces in which saints, heads of cherubs, horses and chariots, figures of squirrels. Boars. Bulls and hares appear among the decorative details, and in many of the forms of vessels, such as the urn-shaped jardinieres, the albarelli, or apoth ecary jars, and the barrel - shaped flower jars, which were borrowed from the Italians by the Spaniards. In the seventeenth century, potters went to Spain from Italy and introduced certain'styles of modeling and paintingthere. It is probable that some of these artisans went from Genoa or Savona, as we can trace a marked resemblance in some of the Talavera and Toledo wares to those of the two Italian cities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Maiolica: In the Collection of the Hispanic Society of America Towards the sixteenth century the Sevillano potters discovered a simpler way of making effective and artistic azulejos, which they called the cuerda seca process. These tiles were extensively produced at Seville through the following centuries, and many of them may be seen in the walls of the upper corridor of this Museum. The painted tile-work of Seville gained for her a well-merited reputation during the latter part of the sixteenth, and through the two following centuries. Large quantities of these tiles and panels were sent to Mexico, Peru and the West Indies and other Spanish possessions to be used in the mural decora tions of churches, convents and other structures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexican Maiolica: In the Collection of the Hispanic Society of America Maiolica is a soft pottery, of whitish or buff tint, covered with an enamel, or glaze, whose dense white color and great hardness are imparted by a greater or lesser proportion of tin in the composition. Being entirely opaque, the tin or stanniferous enamel will obscure an- decoration which may be applied beneath it. The colors must be painted either over the enamel, after it has been fixed by the fire, or in it, being applied to the dry enamel before firing. After being fused in the kiln, the inglaze designs appear to be incorporated with the enamel. This latter method was the one employed by the Mexican potters. Maiolica was first introduced into Mexico by Spanish potters from Talavera and Seville, Spain, toward the end of the sixteenth century, and native Mexican potters continued the manufacture from that time down to the present day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This multidisciplinary project studies religious murals that were painted by Christianized Maya artists in the first centuries after the conquest of Mexico. Solari and Williams study the paintings, all of which are based in the Yucatán Peninsula, from an art history perspective, along with the printed sources referencing the murals. At the same time, they examine the chemical signatures left by the murals' pigments and the techniques used in their production through state-of-the-art imaging technologies. By using these methodologies, the authors seek to explain the many ways in which cultural and material exchange took place between the Spanish and Maya peoples. At first glance, murals depicting Spanish ideals of Western Christianity would appear to be an obvious and frequent tool of oppression in the Yucatán, as they were elsewhere in the Americas, but they were also a form of agency for Indigenous people as a means to shape these narratives with their own subtle imagery and ideas drawn from Mayan cosmologies and cultural traditions. These painters used European pictorial techniques, such as perspective, while also using local materials to create vivid pigments and colors never before seen in murals in Europe. The authors seek to trace how the initial and continued use of these material sources to create these images led to a much more localized form of Catholicism that continues to be practiced by Mayan speakers today"--
