Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magyars in America The New American Series consists of studies of the following racial groups, together with a study of the Eastern Orthodox Churches: Albanian and Bulgarian, Armenian and Assyrian-Chaldean, Czecho-Slovak, Greek, Italian, Jewish, Jugo-Slav (Croatian, Servian, Slovenian), Magyar, Polish, Russian and Ruthenian, or Ukrainian, Spanish (Spaniards) and Portuguese, Syrian. These studies, made under the auspices of the Interchurch World Movement were undertaken to show, in brief outline, the social, economic and religious background, European or Asiatic, of each group and to present the experience - social, economic and religious - of the particular group in America, with special reference to the contact of the given people with religious institutions in America. It was designed that the studies should be sympathetic but critical. It is confidently believed that this series will help America to appreciate and appropriate the spiritual wealth represented by the vast body of New Americans, each group having its own peculiar heritage and potentialities; and will lead Christian America, so far as she will read them, to become a better lover of mankind. The writer, m each case, is a kinsman or has had direct and intimate relationship with the people, or group of peoples, presented. First-hand knowledge and the ability to study and write from a deeply sympathetic and broadly Christian viewpoint were primary conditions in the selection of the authors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hungarians in the American Civil War Although the Hungarian has but recently become an "element" in the great American "melting pot," he has been by no means a stranger on this continent. He seems to have even preceded here all European races except the Norsemen, for the Tyrker, or Turk, who, according to the Icelandic saga, discovered grapes at Vinland about the year 1000 A.D., could have been no other than an Hungarian. In Sir Humphrey Gilbert's ill-fated expedition to New Foundland in 1583 we find an Hungarian humanist, Stephanus Parmenius Budaeus, who had been selected by Sir Humphrey, on account of his learning and his elegant Latin verse, to be the historian of the expedition. Even the "fake" Hungarian nobleman appeared quite at the beginnings of colonial history, the first known example of this, fortunately not very numerous, species being no less a personage than the redoubtable Captain John Smith, President of Virginia, Admiral of New England, etc. He alleged to have received a patent of nobility, or grant of arms, from Sigismund Bathory, Prince of Transylvania, a copy of which is on file in the College of Arms in London. Hungarian historians, however, pronounced it to be a forgery, and a very clumsy one at that. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hungarian Exiles HE winter of 1041 was very severe throughout all Europe, and travel was made easier, in one way, by the freezing of the rivers. Therefore Bernard II, Duke of Saxony - a province of the German Empire whose rulers at that time were unusually independent - thought it a good time to travel with his household; and he decided to make a visit to his relatives in Poland, King Casimir and his Saxon mother, Ryxa. He also anticipated much pleasure in meeting that distinguished soldier, Bela, the exiled prince of Hungary, who had married Ryxa's daughter, Gisela, and who, together with his wife and two sons, Geyza aged ten, and Ladislaus, seven, formed part of the royal family at Gnesen. These little princes were not the last to learn of the intended visit; and as the Duke's son, Ordulf. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
