The article by our correspondent, Mr. Manning, describing upwards of a hundred varieties of apples, which he has proved at his Pomological Garden, in Salem, is one of the most excellent papers we have ever published; invaluable to those who wish to make a choice selection of apples for a garden. Mr. Walker's communication on the culture of the tulip, is a plain and practical treatise, so full and complete in all the particulars of the growth of this splendid flower, that any one may be enabled to bloom it in great beauty. To our botanical readers, the article by Mr. Oakes, upon several new plants of New England, will afford a rich treat. The paper read before the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, from Mr. Haggerston, upon the destruction of the rose slug, is of great value. Dr. Hildreth's article, on the state of gardening in Ohio, and the cultivation of plants in that climate, is highly interesting, and contains many useful hints, worthy the attention of every cultivator. The first article of our series of illustrations of the principles of landscape gardening has been given, containing a notice of the elegant residence of our correspondent, Mr. Downing, Newburgh, N. Y. It will serve as a copy of what we intend to continue in our next volume. Besides these, there are many other articles, which possess equal interest. The Reviews in this volume comprise a great amount of information, particularly that of Liebig's Chemistry. Under our General and Foreign Notices will be found the gleanings of the English periodicals, detailing the cultivation of many plants, fruits, and flowers. For the ready assistance which we have received from our friends, we again offer our thanks. To their aid the Magazine is indebted for much of its interest; and we trust they will continue the same kindness towards us, as in years past. The depression of trade and manufactures throughout the country has had a sensible effect upon the cultivation of the arts and sciences, and more especially upon that science which contributes in so great a degree to the luxuries, rather than the necessities, of life. Not only do such derangements in the commercial world affect the pecuniary means of the people, and compel them to cut off the expenditure of their resources in the completion of beautiful gardens and grounds, but they absorb so much of their attention that, for a time, all the pleasures arising from their possession are neglected or forgotten, and the latent taste, just being developed, is lost, perhaps, not again to be renewed. Such, to a certain extent, has been the case the past year; but few beautiful suburban dwellings have been erected, few fine gardens laid out, few greenhouses and graperies constructed, and few grounds richly ornamented and planted, compared with preceding years; and though the year closed with more interest in horticulture than it opened, there has not been that zeal and real interest prevalent which the ardent lover of rural improvement could wish to record. All this, however, we trust is but transient, to be followed with a revival of business everywhere, with a deeper interest in horticultural advancement than our country has yet witnessed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Vol. 32: Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs; 1866 Comparing this summary of the season with the last and previous years, we find that the winter of 1864 - 5 was above the average for temperature, with no extremes of cold, the lowest being 2 below zero; the uniformity of temperature was very remarkable. Though but very little snow fell, - at no time we think exceeding four inches, - yet the ground was well covered from December 8th till spring. The month of March, usually accompanied with keen cutting winds, and sometimes a very low temperature, was mild and favorable. There were fewer extremes of temperature than often occur during our winters. The general characteristics of the year might be classed as a mild winter, a warm and favorable spring, a dry and hot summer, and a mild autumn - somewhat similar to that of 1864; indeed, it is rare to find two seasons so much alike to follow in succession. The summer was as dry as that of 1864, but the drought commenced earlier that year than in 1865, and owing probably to the liberal rains of April and May, vegetation suffered less the last year than in 1864. In our climate (belgium) if a variety Of strawberry does not bear well in an Open situa tion, the vicissitudes Of the winter if in the spring the fruit is partly abortive; if, during the summer, at the time, or after a scanty production, the leaves are unable to withstand the sun's rays, and consequently become scorched - such a variety does not merit general cultivation, even although the quality of the fruit may be good.
