Notwithstanding the great amount of information which has been written upon almost every branch of gardening, there are yet numerous subjects which have scarcely been noticed, hut which will continue to receive attention in future volumes. The Tenth Volume will close what may be called the First Series of the Magazine. For the greater facility of commencing subscriptions, the next volume will begin a New Series, or the Eleventh Volume of the entire work. Two title pages will he given, in order that the enumeration of the volumes may be continued. In the present volume, we have commenced the publication of a series of articles on the Insects which infest trees and plants, by that excellent entomologist, Dr. Harris. Two have already appeared, on insects which have but recently made their appearance, but which, should they be allowed to increase, will be highly injurious. These papers will be continued in our next, and future volumes, and will, we hope, he the means of aiding, by a knowledge of their habits, in the discovery of more effectual means for their destruction'. An article on the ripening of the Pear, (p. 22,) by Mr. Walker, is deserving of attention: since the introduction of the numerous varieties of this fruit, which ripen from November to May, it is quite important that the best mode of preserving them should he known. Mr. Teschemacher's articles on the growth of plants in charcoal and guano, arc subjects which will interest every cultivator. Mr. Carmichael's papers on pruning, and a continuation of our descriptions and engravings of pears, will he found valuable to the pomologist. We con versed with gentlemen from almost every State in the Union, at the Pomological Conventions, last autumn, and they all complained of the scarcity of fruit, - particularly of apples and pears. It is the more remarkable, from the fact that the failure was not produced by the same causes. In the south and west, late spring frosts destroyed the blossoms. The principal supply of apples has been obtained from northern New York, and Maine, where the crop was nearly an average one. Peaches were abundant in high and ex posed localities, throughout the State. The crop of grapes was large and excellent. The depression of trade and manufactures throughout the country has had a sensible effect upon the cultivation of the arts and sciences, and more especially upon that science which contributes in so great a degree to the luxuries, rather than the necessities, of life. Not only do such derangements in the commercial world affect the pecuniary means of the people, and compel them to cut off the expenditure of their resources in the completion of beautiful gardens and grounds, but they absorb so much of their attention that, for a time, all the pleasures arising from their possession are neglected or forgotten, and the latent taste, just being developed, is lost, perhaps, not again to be renewed. Such, to a certain extent, has been the case the past year; but few beautiful suburban dwellings have been erected, few fine gardens laid out, few greenhouses and graperies constructed, and few grounds richly ornamented and planted, compared with preceding years; and though the year closed with more interest in horticulture than it opened, there has not been that zeal and real interest prevalent which the ardent lover of rural improvement could wish to record. All this, however, we trust is but transient, to be followed with a revival of business everywhere, with a deeper interest in horticultural advancement than our country has yet witnessed. The introduction of new ﬂow ers, from abroad, has not been so great, within a year or two, as previously: so much disappointment has been occasioned by hasty importations of new things, that amateurs and others pre fer to obtain some correct information, before they purchase at high prices: in consequence of this, there have not been so many new plants noticed, as in some of our earlier volumes. In this volume, however, we have described a great number of new seedling verbenas, camellias, and geraniums, the produc tions of our amateur and practical gardeners, and most of them commended as among the finest varieties which have yet been raised of these admired tribes. Our Floricultural Notices have not been as extended as usual; but they will be more com plete hereafter. Among the Miscellaneous Intelligence is to be found some very valuable information. A hearty co-operation of the friends of horticulture, through. Out the country, is only needed, to render the Magazine more and more useful. The communications in the present volume. In our climate (belgium) if a variety Of strawberry does not bear well in an Open situa tion, the vicissitudes Of the winter if in the spring the fruit is partly abortive; if, during the summer, at the time, or after a scanty production, the leaves are unable to withstand the sun's rays, and consequently become scorched - such a variety does not merit general cultivation, even although the quality of the fruit may be good. A variety of this kind may be preserved for exceptional situations, but these do not enter into the question now under consideration.
