Book excerpt: As a cousin of Queen Victoria, the beautiful Princess Marigold is obliged to yield to the Queen’s wishes when it comes to marriage – and the Monarch is most reluctant to allow her to marry the man she loves, Prince Holden of Allenberg, because she views his tiny European Principality as insignificant and uninfluential. So, although the Queen assents to their engagement, she puts obstacles in the way of their marriage in the hope that Princess Marigold will fall out of love with Prince Holden if she can keep them apart for any length of time. One such obstacle is the Royal order that Marigold travels to Greece to represent the Queen at the State funeral of Prince Eumenus. Determined to stay with her beloved Holden, the Princess comes up with a cunning plan. She will send another young woman in her place – and Prince Holden knows the ideal candidate, the beautiful young Vicar’s daughter called Avila Grandell, who looks uncannily like the Princess and, being half-Greek, speaks the language fluently. And so, with her mother’s concerned consent, this awestruck young innocent’s adventure begins, voyaging to Athens and on to the island of Malia. Little do any of them expect Avila to be touched by the Light of the God Apollo and would then fall in love with a handsome charming Prince of her own!

Book Synopsis Keats, Hermeticism, and the Secret Societies by : Professor Jennifer N Wunder
Download or read book Keats, Hermeticism, and the Secret Societies written by Professor Jennifer N Wunder and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jennifer Wunder makes a strong case for the importance of hermeticism and the secret societies to an understanding of John Keats's poetry and his speculations about religious and philosophical questions. Although secret societies exercised enormous cultural influence during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, they have received little attention from Romantic scholars. And yet, information about the societies permeated all aspects of Romantic culture. Groups such as the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons fascinated the reading public, and the market was flooded with articles, pamphlets, and books that discussed the societies's goals and hermetic philosophies, debated their influence, and drew on their mythologies for literary inspiration. Wunder recovers the common knowledge about the societies and offers readers a first look at the role they played in the writings of Romantic authors in general and Keats in particular. She argues that Keats was aware of the information available about the secret societies and employed hermetic terminology and imagery associated with these groups throughout his career. As she traces the influence of these secret societies on Keats's poetry and letters, she offers readers a new perspective not only on Keats's writings but also on scholarship treating his religious and philosophical beliefs. While scholars have tended either to consider Keats's aesthetic and religious speculations on their own terms or to adopt a more historical approach that rejects an emphasis on the spiritual for a materialist interpretation, Wunder offers us a middle way. Restoring Keats to a milieu characterized by simultaneously worldly and mythological propensities, she helps to explain if not fully reconcile the insights of both camps.

Book Synopsis Under the Spell of Orpheus by : Judith E. Bernstock
Download or read book Under the Spell of Orpheus written by Judith E. Bernstock and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive view of the Orpheus myth in modern art focuses on an extremely rich artistic symbol and cuts through all the clichés to explore truly significant problems of meaning. The author takes a new approach to the iconography of major modern artists by incorporating psychological and literary analysis, as well as biography. The three parts of the book explore the ways in which artists have identified with different aspects of the often paradoxical Orpheus myth. The first deals with artists such as Paul Klee, Carl Milles, and Barbara Hepworth. In the second, Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoschka, and Isamu Noguchi are discussed. Artists examined in the final part include Pablo Picasso, Jacques Lipchitz, Ethel Schwabacher, and Cy Twombly. The author documents her argument with more than sixty illustrations.

Book Synopsis Blue Heart, Red Blood by : Apollo Alehc Sore
Download or read book Blue Heart, Red Blood written by Apollo Alehc Sore and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue Heart, Red Blood is a poetic exposition of one man's road to finding true freedom and happiness. It's thoughtful, revolutionary, and as personal as a man can objectify. An autodidactic poet, Apollo Alehc Soré's poems are aggressive and bold and beautifully breaks what he perceives to be constricting rules of formation, rhyme schemes, and subject matter of "scholastic" poetry. This book was written for human-to-human relatability, so the author can feel less alone in the thoughts, emotions, and experiences that have shaped him into who he is today, as he feels that someone somewhere can relate. From the dregs of society, his voice and his poetry are universal and loud.
