Book excerpt: Joseph Viek, Bardo99's protagonist awakens to learn there has been an accident. But what kind of accident? The massive coronary that ends his own life, or a much more dread accident, the kind we associate with places like Chernobyl? On his way to the disaster zone, a road accident strands him in a deserted tundra. Rescued by an unholy trinity of American GIs, more adventures await him: quarantine in a cancer ward -- or is it an AIDS ward? -- a resurrection of the dead from all of post-modernist catastrophes: my lai, babi yar, kigali, and 'no-gun' ri. And why is it that everything he touches seems to have the uncanny misfortune of blowing up? Cecile Pineda has crafted a divine comedy where the sacred keeps uneasy truce with the profane--back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting journey down Theodore Roosevelt's "river of doubt" with a diverse crew of adventurers, scientists, and Indigenous leaders who shine light on the past, present, and future of a natural wonder. Sam Moses took part in the adventure of a lifetime when he, along with seventeen men and two women, embarked on the Rio Roosevelt Expedition. They would follow the former president's wake down five-hundred miles of extreme whitewater into the dark heart of the Amazon. The party was guided by two chiefs from the Cinta Larga tribe—the same tribe that stalked Roosevelt’s expedition in 1914—who, between rapids, tell the story of the tribe’s own Trail of Tears. After the wildest whitewater is past, Moses travels with the chiefs to their village to witness the massive illegal mahogany logging from their forest, the Roosevelt Indigenous Territory. River Without a Cause puts us in the raft during those heart pounding rapid descents, as we experience the drama, dynamics and disputes between the Bull Moose and his co-leader, Brazil’s most famous explorer, the rigid Colonel Candido Rondon. As the Amazon stands on the precipiece of hope with the election of a new Brazillian president, River Without a Cause is a moving and galvanzing tale of adventure that is a fitting tribute to this world wonder.

Book excerpt: There has been a dramatic increase in the amount of narrative work published by Chicana and Latina authors in the past 5 to 10 years. Nonetheless, there has been little attempt to catalog this material. This reference provides convenient access to all forms of narrative written by Chicana and Latina authors from the early 1940s through 2002. In doing so, it helps users locate these works and surveys the growth of this vast body of literature. The volume cites more than 2,750 short stories, novels, novel excerpts, and autobiographies written by some 600 Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban American, Dominican American, and Nuyorican women authors. These citations are grouped in five indexes: an author/title index, title/author index, anthology index, novel index, and autobiography index. Short annotations are provided for the anthologies, novels, and autobiographies. Thus the user who knows the title of a work can discover the author, the other works the author has written, and the anthologies in which the author's shorter pieces have been reprinted, along with information about particular works.

Book excerpt: This poetic narrative discusses the creative life of a 9th century Indian stonecarver who is drafted at an early age to spend his entire life working on the thousands of statues that fill the niches of an Indonesian temple. Exploring the muse-artist relationship as few works of fiction have done, this novel is an intensely political work--a parable that pits the blind cruelty of a feudal ruler against the creative expression of a single slave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before they were Amazonian queens, they were simply mothers concerned about their children at the hands of man. So long ago, two children went missing: one a young teen witch and one a young fairy child. Missing and unaccounted for, unbeknownst to each, witches and fairies alike, it would begin a reconciliation, which was thousands of years delayed. Both witches and fairies, worried with grief, began a search for their youth, only to be met with the truth of their demise at the hands of the savage man. Neither people could have foreseen the unification of their world, nor could they have predicted that they would become the most powerful people of all the dimensions. And that they would call their most beautiful land and dimension Amazon, named after the place in another dimension, where the last talisman of the Great Elders Wall was found at the beginning of the age of the elders long ago. No one could have foreseen the following events that led up to the missing of the twelfth queen. And unless they find her, all the accomplishments theyve achieve since the brutality of the missing girls so long ago will be lost. While the search is on to find the twelfth queen and to find out what happened to her, time is running out as man has grown a thousand fold and is even more brutal, as they once were long ago. The highest of the all witches and fairies alike was the twelfth queen, and without her guidance, they are faltered, unsure, and on the verge of internal war. As they close their prayers with We are the time, and we are one! there are those around the queens table that worry silently if the twelfth queen is even still alive. And if she is not, their steadfast fears just may become reality. A war among the witches and fairies with man gravely on their very doorstep, threatening to destroy them both, would cripple witches and fairies alike. Separately, they believe man can defeat them, each blaming the other for lack of focus and an overall weaker spirit. And if this worried insecure reasoning grows among them, it could cost them everything. So her most cherished and dearest of friends, Dartilia searches and searches for her anywhere and everywhere, all in hopes of finding her most cherished and dearest of friends, Fayla. As she searches, she remembered all Fayla had taught her and how she came to be known as Fayla, gentle and cruel, however still loved by most, but clearly and urgently missed by all.

Book excerpt: References of Amazons date back to the time of Plato where he mentions trade between the Amazons and the island nation of Atlantis. In the "Iliad," a reference is made as to a battle that occurred between the Amazons, an ally of Troy and a Greek contingent led by the Greek hero, Achilles. The battle ended with the death of the Amazon queen, and therein lies the beginning of my tale. The novel, Amazon Nights, explores the question of, can a civilization of women (or men for that matter) exist without having some interaction with the other sex? The answer to that question rest with the plight of the new queen to produce a female heir to the throne. For that, she needs the assistance of a man, one that can woo her, seduce her, excite her, and eventually impregnate her. The chosen male for this union has other ideas. He wants more-a relationship that is an unconditional commitment to love. And while these two people work out their differences, a plot to overthrow the queen unfolds and a new king sets off to claim the Amazon world. Monitoring the events as they unfold is a champion for both the Amazon queen and her lover-the great goddess Hera. She, too, is seeking an unconditional commitment to love and will do all within her power to aid the lovestruck pair. The final chapter culminates in a battle said to be too insignificant to be chronicled in the history books, but be forewarned there can be only one winner as revealed when the day blends into Amazon nights.
