Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1820 and 1913, approximately 16,000 black people left the United States to start new lives in Liberia, Africa, in what was at the time the largest out-migration in US history. When Tolbert Major, a former Kentucky slave and single father, was offered his own chance for freedom, he accepted. He, several family members, and seventy other people boarded the Luna on July 5, 1836. After they arrived in Liberia, Tolbert penned a letter to his former owner, Ben Major: "Dear Sir, We have all landed on the shores of Africa and got into our houses.... None of us have been taken with the fever yet." Drawing on extensive research and fifteen years' worth of surviving letters, author Susan E. Lindsey illuminates the trials and triumphs of building a new life in Liberia, where settlers were free, but struggled to acclimate themselves to an unfamiliar land, coexist with indigenous groups, and overcome disease and other dangers. Liberty Brought Us Here: The True Story of American Slaves Who Migrated to Liberia explores the motives and attitudes of colonization supporters and those who lived in the colony, offering perspectives beyond the standard narrative that colonization was driven solely by racism or forced exile.

Book excerpt: Through poetry this book provides insightful reflections on the attributes of and imperative for human decency in one’s personal life and in the process of national development. Focusing on Liberia, the book illuminates aspects of the country’s history, particularly its war and postwar situation as well as the challenges for development. The book further advocates the need for patriotism, peace, knowledge, integrity and capacity building while conveying a message that development should not be regarded solely by the level of material wealth, but also by how it touches human life and whether it protects or undermines the dignity of people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of discrimination is an appropriation by Liberians for what I consider a settled assumption in which they are classified as despisers and erudite learners. Can Liberians escape from their choice to discriminate? No and yes. Let me be clear from the outset that no answer to this question can ever be completely convincing. What I confer depend on the existential condition of really living and not worry about fruition. This belief is becoming defensive for Liberians to make a promise for destiny. Strenuously, this belief constellate the despisers to be gronam or yanam boys, market women, and do menial labors; and the erudite learners are bookish and professional. In other words, who is responsible for the boundary of Liberians without redemption according to what is available? I know a chorus of critics will be ready for me with objection. Since formidable confusion is arising to detect who is a descendant of Americans and Africans, this dualism is for identity despite the fact that they are on the West Coast of Africa. This book should be able to explore the culpable negligence of Liberians through discourse narratives that are merely an attempt to further the use of acquired education and natural capacity. There has been tension for unity to abandon the reproach—we are separated, not equal—the distinctiveness for discrimination.

Book excerpt: "[These essays] reflect a lively, unselfconscious, rigorous, erudite, and earnestly open mind that's busy refining its view of life, literature, and a great deal in between." —Los Angeles Times Split into five sections--Reading, Being, Seeing, Feeling, and Remembering--Changing My Mind finds Zadie Smith casting an acute eye over material both personal and cultural. This engaging collection of essays, some published here for the first time, reveals Smith as a passionate and precise essayist, equally at home in the world of great books and bad movies, family and philosophy, British comedians and Italian divas. Whether writing on Katherine Hepburn, Kafka, Anna Magnani, or Zora Neale Hurston, she brings deft care to the art of criticism with a style both sympathetic and insightful. Changing My Mind is journalism at its most expansive, intelligent, and funny--a gift to readers and writers both.

Book excerpt: This book presents poetry, which the author believes is another suitable medium of scholarship for expressing his views on Liberia's development. He says that studying poetry, evaluating its messages, and embracing them within relevant contexts can be helpful to Liberians to empathize with and support each other rather than engaging in acts of violence and destruction. The poems cover some of the salient issues of Liberia’s developmental process, highlighting the conditions of progress, stagnation, and regression. The lyrics, figuratively in some poems and literally in others, express the author’s sentiments and hopes for positive change now and in the future for Liberia. . It also includes lyrics with philosophical and social overtones regarding family and friends.

They are not arranged in chronological order, but there is a consistent underlying theme: the author’s reaction to war, politics and transitional justice in Africa, with a particular focus on Sierra Leone and Liberia. He has studied these two countries more intimately than all others; but this book includes articles on Ivory Coast, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African continent is home to spectacularly expressive human beings: rebellious anti-colonial and opposition leaders, eloquent novelists, political and social activists, comical geniuses, pensive and philosophical poets and intellectuals, as well as a few raving dictators. And the body of proverbial wisdom from Africa alone could fill many volumes. Despite being eminently quotable, Africa is not so readily quoted. Stewart's Quotable Africa covers the whole of Africa - north to south and east to west - and includes memorable statements from hundreds of speakers including Nelson Mandela, Doris Lessing, Chinua Achebe, Julius Nyerere, Kofi Annan among others, as well as biblical passages and proverbs. Julia Stewart has spent over a decade collecting the 5000 plus quotes found in this book, all of them either by Africans or about African subjects.
