Book excerpt: As you walk around 'Louisiana' today, the location of buildings and landscape seems to be firm and unchanging, as if it had always been such. But under the apparently self-evident environment lies an epic story of creation and innovation that goes back to the Napoleonic Wars. The museum now publishes a comprehensive and groundbreaking book, 'Louisiana: Architecture and Landscape', where the American architect, author and expert on modern Nordic architecture Michael Sheridan tells the story of the museum's long creation. It is the story of a museum that has grown organically in keeping with the evolution of contemporary art and the vision of the museum?s founder, Knud W. Jensen. Today, everyone wants to be like the museum in Humlebæk but how did Louisiana become Louisiana?

Book excerpt: An essential overview of Jafa's sweeping, dynamic and disquieting video portraits of Black American life Though he has worked in film and music for decades, American video artist Arthur Jafa only garnered acclaim in the art world in 2016 for his video work Love is the Message, the Message is Death. Composed of found images and videos, his oeuvre revolves around Black American culture, the history of slavery, and ongoing structural and physical violence against Black Americans. As Jafa put it in his 2003 text "My Black Death": "The central conundrum of black being (the double bind of our ontological existence) lies in the fact that common misery both defines and limits who we are. Such that our efforts to eliminate those forces which constrain also function to dissipate much which gives us our specificity, our uniqueness, our flavor by destroying the binds that define we will cease to be, but this is the good death (boa morte) to be embraced." This essential overview presents Jafa's best-known works, such as Love is the Message, the Message is Deathand its 2018 follow-up piece The White Album, alongside never-before-seen projects and essays by notable scholars. Filmmaker and artist Arthur Jafa(born 1960) grew up in Mississippi, where his lifelong fascination with found imagery manifested in his childhood hobby of assembling binders of photographs culled from various sources. As a cinematographer and director of photography, Jafa has collaborated with Stanley Kubrick, Solange Knowles and Spike Lee, among many others. His work on Julie Dash's 1991 film Daughters of the Dustwon him the Best Cinematography award at Sundance. At the 2019 Venice Biennale, he was awarded the Golden Lion for The White Album. Jafa lives in Los Angeles.

Book excerpt: Presents 110 Danish chairs and charts their success at home and abroad from the mid-20th century until the present day In the mid-20th century design became a cultural phenomenon that placed Denmark on the world map. Danish Design emerged in 1949 as a real brand, when American journalists started to write about Danish furniture in relation to a furniture exhibition by Snedkerlauget in Copenhagen. 'Den runde stol' made by Hans. J. Wegner was given the name 'The Chair'. This was not only the beginning of a great export adventure but also a challenge for the Danish designers, who became world recognized for their obsession with creating the perfect chair. The chair has always been the touchstone of designers and the design historians' favourite object. It touches and reflects the body it carries with arms, legs, seat and back. Besides this point, the chair is one of our most culture-bearing design objects and it tells a story about the period and the society from which it was created. In a very unique way this book shows, not just in words but also with drawings and photos how Danish chairs are built on historical furniture types, which are then refined into the infinite. The message and the explanation for the international success of Danish furniture is this; Danish furniture design is based on foreign culture and the best creations of former times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling examination of the art museum from a renowned director, this sweeping book explores how architecture, vision, and funding have transformed art museums around the world over the past eighty years. How have art museums changed in the past century? Where are they headed in the future? Charles Saumarez Smith is uniquely qualified to answer these questions, having been at the helm of three major institutions over the course of his distinguished career. For The Art Museum in Modern Times, Saumarez Smith has undertaken an odyssey, visiting art museums across the globe and examining how the experience of art is shaped by the buildings that house it. His story starts with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, one of the first museums to focus squarely on the art of the present rather than the past. When it opened in 1939, MoMA’s boldly modernist building represented a stark riposte to the neoclassicism of most earlier art museums. From there, Saumarez Smith investigates dozens of other museums, including the Tate Modern in London, the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the West Bund Museum in Shanghai, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He explores our shifting reasons for visiting museums, changes to the way exhibits are organized and displayed, and the spectacular new architectural landmarks that have become destinations in their own right. Global in scope yet full of personal insight, this fully illustrated celebration of the modern art museum will appeal to art lovers, museum professionals, and museum goers alike.

Book excerpt: In Dream Villa Singh explores how the night transforms what seems ordinary by day into something mysterious and unsettling. This series of colour photographs presents a landscape which exists as much in the artist's imagination as in the real world. Singh travels to many different cities never knowing where Dream Villa or its inhabitants will present themselves. It is a place where nothing is quite as it seems to be - it comes alive at night, when all is lit by artificial light and the moon is just ornamentation.

Book excerpt: An all-new collection of paintings and sculpture by art legend Robert Williams. First exhibited at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in early 2015, the work in this oversized, hardcover exhibition catalog is accompanied by insightful essays by the artist. --- "The current international capitol of artistic sophistication is New York City. Ever since the end of the Second World War, every small city in the United States that has an art community has looked to New York for cultural parenting. However, an interesting anomaly has developed over the years. "Sophistication," like any other folkway, travels slowly with misinterpretations happening along the way. By the time high culture reached the West Coast it had traded its Brooks Brothers suit for cut-offs, a Hawaiian shirt, and flip-flops. Art on the West Coast, as much as it tries to maintain blue blood affectations shows mutations. It just doesn't have the aloof adroit coldness the Eastern Seaboard art society seems to portray." - Robert Williams, from his introduction to Slang Aesthetics
