Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story begins in 1757 when Spain established a fort and a mission in the area. It was later claimed that the Spaniards discovered a rich mine and hid a room full of silver bars in a mine before being massacred by Indians. In 1831 Jim Bowie looked for the silver and found a battle with Indians instead. In 1868 an expedition from San Marcos located the supposed mine but were unable to excavate the shaft that held millions of dollars of silver bars. In the 1900's some of the most unique characters Texas ever created devoted their lives to the project. There was Julius Norton, a railroad engineer turned prominent San Antonio attorney who spent the last 13 years of his life living at the mine, only to die alone at the site under mysterious circumstances. There was Martha "Wenonah" Learn, a vaudeville dancer, a friend of Harry Houdini, who left the stage to run a business in San Antonio to then turn up at the mine and live there for the rest of her days. The last person to search the mine died in 1990. The treasure may have never existed but the history of the area and all of the unique people involved is the treasure. A massacre, two murders, a suspicious death, the inventor of the modern shrimp industry, Jim Bowie, fortunes lost, a lady immune to rattlesnakes, events that changed the course of history, the Texas Folklorist J. Frank Dobie, San Antonio con men, and an unmarked grave. It is all there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1868, four treasure hunters from San Marcos, Texas, searched for a lost mine on the San Saba River, near today’s Menard. It was popularized as folklore in J. Frank Dobie’s treasure legend classic Coronado’s Children. One hundred and fifty years later, a descendant of one of those four men set out to discover the history behind the legend. This book recounts that search, from the founding of the ill-fated 1757 mission on the San Saba River up to the last attempt, in 1990, to find the treasure in this particular legend. It describes Jim Bowie, a fake treasure map industry, murder trials, a rattlesnake dancer, fortunes lost, a very long Texas cave, and surprising twists to the story popularized by Dobie. The book will not lead anyone to the legendary ten-thousand pounds of silver, but it will open a treasure trove of Texas history and the unique characters who hunted the fabulous riches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trammel’s Trace tells the story of a borderlands smuggler and an important passageway into early Texas. Trammel’s Trace, named for Nicholas Trammell, was the first route from the United States into the northern boundaries of Spanish Texas. From the Great Bend of the Red River it intersected with El Camino Real de los Tejas in Nacogdoches. By the early nineteenth century, Trammel’s Trace was largely a smuggler’s trail that delivered horses and contraband into the region. It was a microcosm of the migration, lawlessness, and conflict that defined the period. By the 1820s, as Mexico gained independence from Spain, smuggling declined as Anglo immigration became the primary use of the trail. Familiar names such as Sam Houston, David Crockett, and James Bowie joined throngs of immigrants making passage along Trammel’s Trace. Indeed, Nicholas Trammell opened trading posts on the Red River and near Nacogdoches, hoping to claim a piece of Austin’s new colony. Austin denied Trammell’s entry, however, fearing his poor reputation would usher in a new wave of smuggling and lawlessness. By 1826, Trammell was pushed out of Texas altogether and retreated back to Arkansas Even so, as author Gary L. Pinkerton concludes, Trammell was “more opportunist than outlaw and made the most of disorder.”
