That is, it looked like a rock at first sight, but upon a closer inspection it proved to be a cube of well-fitted, although roughly finished, masonry. It was about six feet square, and there were three stone steps leading up in front. Behind this altar-like structure a vast wall of the natural rock, a dark limestone, had been sculptured into the shape of a colossal and exceedingly ugly human face,—as if the head of a stone giant were half sunken in that side of what was evidently an immense cave. There were men in the cave, but no women were to be seen. Several of the men were standing near the altar, and one of them was putting fuel upon the fire. The only garment worn by any of them was a ragged blanket, the Mexican serape. In the middle of the blanket was a hole, and when the wearer's head was thrust through this he was in full dress.

Book excerpt: William Osborn Stoddard (1835-1925) was an American author, inventor, and assistant secretary to Abraham Lincoln during his first term. Stoddard's father was a bookseller, and Stoddard worked in his bookshop while growing up. After graduation, Stoddard was employed in an "editorial position" in 1857 at the Daily Ledger (Chicago); by 1858 he had become editor and proprietor of the Central Illinois Gazette, in Champaign, Illinois. Stoddard knew Lincoln, worked hard for his election, and received a government appointment. After two bouts with typhoid, he left his White House post in July 1864. Stoddard first published work in 1869. He wrote both poetry and fiction, ultimately producing over a hundred books, including 76 books for boys. Stoddard also received nine patents for inventions.

'The Indians say that they first came to the city of Mexico from a place far to the north, in the desert, ' the friar said. 'Chicomoztoc it's called, the Place of the Seven Caves. They climbed up from a land beneath the ground and migrated by stages to the Valley of Mexico. The priest who Doña Isabella's father spoke to said that, before the final destruction of Tenochtitlan, seven temple priests took the treasure into the deserts of the north and concealed it deep within Chicomoztoc, in Tollan, the chief of their ancestors' subterranean cities.' 'My father searched the desert for the entrance to the caves, ' Doña Isabella added, 'but he never found them. It was his fruitless searching that bankrupted our family. He returned to Spain an impoverished man and soon our fortunes foundered. Now that we are destitute, my brother has taken up this foolish quest in his turn. We will wander the sands of the desert fruitlessly, until our bones bleach white in the sun!'

Book excerpt: In the year 1520 Hernando Cortez conquered the Aztec Empire and captured riches that filled the treasury of King Charles I of Spain to overflowing. Ships laden with gold and precious stones flowed from the New World to Spain, making Spain the riches country in Europe. However not all the treasure of the Aztec Empire was found by Hernando Cortez and his men as they slaughtered and looted their way through the new world. For hundreds of years rumors abounded of an Aztec secret chamber with rooms full of gold and precious gems that the Conquistadors never found. Quite by accident Peter Logan has found the chamber hidden for more than five hundred years. In a desperate flight from the Spanish family who claims the treasure belongs to them and a killer tracking him down, Peter must somehow find a way to return the treasure to its rightful place with the antiquities of Mexico.

Well then, this book is for you! Fortune and Glory tells you all you need to know in order to set off on an epic quest for the great lost treasures of history. Starting with a quick exploration of the history of treasure hunting and a look at the gear that you will need, it then delves into a survey of the 'lost' treasures that are out there just waiting to be claimed. Continent by continent, the book covers the legends of hidden locations like El Dorado and King Solomon's Mines, as well as covering the most illustrious lost artifacts such as the Holy Grail, the Hanjo Masamune, and the Irish Crown Jewels. If your interest lies with the loot rather than the history, the book also discusses Nazi gold, pirate treasure, and the treasure hordes of the Copper Scrolls. This book is your first step towards becoming the pistol-toting, fedora-wearing international tomb robber and treasure hunter you've always dreamt of being!
