Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Altsheler's French and Indian War Series consists of six volumes: 1. The Hunters of the Hills This is the first volume of a series dealing with the great struggle of France and England and their colonies for dominion in North America, culminating with the fall of Quebec. It is largely concerned with the Iroquois, the mighty league known in their own language as the Hodenosaunee, for the favor of which both French and English were high bidders. Altsheler notes that he consulted many authorities, and was not conscious of any historical error. 2. The Shadow of the North -The Shadow of the North, - while an independent story, in itself, is also the second volume of the Great French and Indian War series which began with -The Hunters of the Hills.- All the important characters of the first romance reappear in the second. 3. The Rulers of the Lakes Young Robert Lennox and his friend Tayoga undertake a dangerous trip through the wilderness to warn Fort Refuge of the approach of hostile forces. The story concludes with the battle of Lake George. The book is set almost completely in the wilderness, and provides an accurate picture of Iroquois life and warfare. The Rulers of the Lakes is a complete story, but it is also the third volume of the French and Indian War Series, following The Hunters of the Hills and The Shadow of the North. Robert Lennox, Tayoga, Willet, and all the important characters in the earlier romances reappear. 4. The Masters of the Peaks -The Masters of the Peaks- is a story of the great north woods and the fourth volume of the French and Indian War Series. Tayoga, Willet, and all the other important characters of the earlier romances reappear 5. The Lords of the Wild A Story of the Old New York Border with the backdrop of the French and Indian War: The Lords of the Wild is a complete story, following The Hunters of the Hills, The Shadow of the North, The Rulers of the Lakes, and The Masters of the Peaks. Robert Lennox, Tayoga, Willet, St. Luc, Tandakora and all the principal characters of the earlier volumes reappear. 6. The Sun of Quebec The mystery in the life of Robert Lennox, the central figure in all of the romances, is solved in this sixth and closing volume of the French and Indian War Series.

Book excerpt: The tall youth, turning to the right, went down a gentle slope until he came to a little stream, where he knelt and drank. Despite his weariness, his thirst and his danger he noticed the silvery color of the water, and its soft sighing sound, as it flowed over its pebbly bed, made a pleasant murmur in his ear. Robert Lennox always had an eye for the beautiful, and the flashing brook, in its setting of deep, intense forest green, soothed his senses, speaking to him of comfort and hope.He drank again and then sat back among the bushes, still breathing heavily, but with much more freedom. The sharp pain left his chest, new strength began to flow into his muscles, and, as the body was renewed, so the spirit soared up and became sanguine once more. He put his ear to the earth and listened long, but heard nothing, save sounds natural to the wilderness, the rustling of leaves before the light wind, the whisper of the tiny current, and the occasional sweet note of a bird in brilliant dress, pluming itself on a bough in its pride. He drew fresh courage from the peace of the woods, and resolved to remain longer there by the stream. Settling himself into the bushes and tall grass, until he was hidden from all but a trained gaze, he waited, body and soul alike growing steadily in vigor.

Book excerpt: In the wilderness of the Northeast, Robert Lennox's life is staked on how well he can evade the fierce Tandakora and his persistent warriors. Attuned to every sound and movement in the forest, he follows birds and hides his tracks in bubbling brooks en route to joining up with his friends Tayoga, an Onondaga warrior, and David Willet, a skilled hunter. Two forces compete in Robert's mind: a deep reverence for the beauty of the natural world, and an entrenched unease over ever-lurking danger. First published in 1919, The Lords of the Wild is a heralded entry in Joseph A. Altsheler's French and Indian War Series, which follows the exploits of young Robert Lennox and his friends as they are embroiled in one of the most tumultuous conflicts of American colonial history....Joseph Alexander Altsheler (April 29, 1862 - June 5, 1919) was an American newspaper reporter, editor and author of popular juvenile historical fiction. He was a prolific writer, and produced fifty-one novels and at least fifty-three short stories. Thirty-two of his novels were part of his seven series: The Civil War Series (8 volumes)The French and Indian War Series (6 volumes)The Gold Series (2 volumes)The Great West Series (2 volumes)The Texan Series (3 volumes)The World War Series (3 volumes)The Young Trailers Series (8 volumes)Although each of the thirty-two novels constitutes an independent story, Altsheler suggested a reading order for each series (i.e., he numbered the volumes). The remaining nineteen novels can be read in any order. [Note, however, that A Knight of Philadelphia was later expanded through the addition of nineteen chapters and some minor tweaks to become Mr. Altsheler's novel In Hostile Red.]The short stories, of course, can be read in any order. However, some readers might prefer to read them in the order in which they were published. The short story list below is displayed in chronological order with the publication dates shown alongside the titles.Early life and educationAltsheler was born in Three Springs, Hart County, Kentucky, to Joseph and Louise (née Snoddy) Altsheler. He attended Liberty College in Glasgow, Kentucky, before entering Vanderbilt University.CareerIn 1885, he took a job at the Louisville Courier-Journal as a reporter and later worked as an editor. He started working for the New York World in 1892, first as the paper's Hawaiian correspondent and then as the editor of the World's tri-weekly magazine. Due to a lack of suitable stories, he began writing children's stories for the magazine.Personal lifeAltsheler married Sarah Boles on May 30, 1888; they had one son, Sidney.Altsheler and his family were in Germany in 1914 when World War I began, and they were forced to remain in Germany for a time. The hardships the Altshelers endured in returning to the U.S. damaged Altsheler's health and rendered him a semi-invalid until his death. Upon returning to the U.S., he wrote The World War Series of books based on his ordeal.DeathAltsheler died in New York City on June 5, 1919, aged 57; his obituary appeared in The Evening World, on June 6, 1919. His widow, Sarah, died 30 years later. Both are buried at the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.

Yes, in spite of every danger that had been thrown across their path, they would be able to carry word in time. "We'll be there in half an hour, and we'll know what's going forward," said Willet. "We'll know before then," said Grosvenor confidently. "Our marvelous Indian friend here will tell us when we're half way." Tayoga smiled, but said nothing, and they started again, Willet, as usual, leading, and the Onondaga bringing up the rear. The spire of smoke thickened and darkened, and, to Robert and Grosvenor, it seemed most friendly and alluring. It appeared to rise from a little point of land thrust into the lake but they could not yet see its base, owing to an intervening hill. Just before they reached the crest of the hill Tayoga said: "Wait a moment, Great Bear. I think I hear a sound from the place where the smoke rises, and we may be able to tell what it means." They stopped promptly, and the Onondaga put his ear to the earth. "I hear the sounds very distinctly now," he said. "They are of a kind not often occurring on these shores." "What are they?" asked Robert eagerly. "They are made by axes biting into wood. Many men are cutting down trees." "They're building a fort, and they're in a hurry about it or they would not be felling trees so early in the morning." "Your reasoning about the hurry is good, Dagaeoga. The white man will not go into the forest with his ax at daybreak, unless the need of haste is great, but it is not a fort they build. Mingled with the fall of the axes I hear another note. It is a humming and a buzzing. It is heard in these forests much less often than the thud of the ax. Ah! I was in doubt at first, but I know it now! It is the sound made by a great saw as it eats into the wood." "A saw mill, Tayoga!" "Yes, Dagaeoga, that is what it is, and now mind will tell us why it is here. The logs that the axes cut down are sawed in the mill. The saw would not be needed if the logs were to be used...
