This book was released on 2022-07-10 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psalm-Motet (Eng.) This piece continues Pinkham's series of Psalm-Motets, very brief settings of Psalm verses, many of which were written as gifts for personal friends of the composer. These beautifully concise works are particularly suitable for use as introits and offertories. All of the Psalm-Motets may be performed a cappella or with accompaniment by piano or organ. The keyboard parts, rather than being literal doublings of the choral parts, are conceived to lie well in the hand, to provide acoustic reinforcement to the choir, and, occasionally, to enrich the harmony with pitches that are not found in the choral parts. Typically, this work fills its brief duration with a maximum of musical variety, particularly in the realms of harmony and texture. The first phrase of this soberly dramatic and reflective work begins in unison and expands first to two and then to four real parts. A crescendo from piano to forte in this same phrase foreshadows the vivid dynamic contrasts thatwill figure prominently in the rest of the motet.

Download or read book Musicking written by Christopher Small and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending the inquiry of his early groundbreaking books, Christopher Small strikes at the heart of traditional studies of Western music by asserting that music is not a thing, but rather an activity. In this new book, Small outlines a theory of what he terms "musicking," a verb that encompasses all musical activity from composing to performing to listening to a Walkman to singing in the shower. Using Gregory Bateson's philosophy of mind and a Geertzian thick description of a typical concert in a typical symphony hall, Small demonstrates how musicking forms a ritual through which all the participants explore and celebrate the relationships that constitute their social identity. This engaging and deftly written trip through the concert hall will have readers rethinking every aspect of their musical worlds.

It has been remarked that the discovery of many of our medicinal springs has been due to some romantic incident, or, in other cases, to some occurrence partaking almost of the ludicrous. At the famed Carlsbad, for instance, a princely hunter pursues his stag into the lake where it has sought refuge, whereupon the unusual cries of his hounds, too eagerly breasting the waters, speedily reveal to him the strongly thermal nature of the spring which feeds the lake, and the discovery has benefited the thousands who annually frequent that health-giving resort from almost every land. On the other hand, in the case of our own Bath, although well known to the ancient [...]".
