Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Crawford was digging in the same dirt as his ancestors before him. They had spent their lives scratching a living out of this poor cotton farm in West Tennessee to provide for those of their own. He was a loving husband and father and cared deeply for his wife, Mary, and their three boys. A message came to their door one day that brought the news of a tragic loss while at the same time placing before them a decision that would change their lives forever. It was a message of life and death and one that brought both sorrow and joy to their home. The story weaves itself through times of great struggle and, with it, the despair that entered into their lives. The family is thrown into turmoil when William passes through a near-death experience that sent him into a long and deep valley of depression. In the months to follow, he would become distant from his family and walk the fields, begging God to take his life. It shows forth the grit and determination of three young boys as they take on the responsibilities normally reserved for the head of the family. In their father's absence, the farm itself was suffering along with those that depended on it for their very survival. If Crawford farm was to be saved, they alone must do it. The story is set in the south in the year 1952. It tells of the difficulties of hand-to-mouth living and of the families that endured desperate times to stay on the soil that they loved. The reader is carried to another time and place where people treated one another with respect and neighbor helped neighbor. In the end, victory comes shining through the dark clouds of discouragement and the family stands united in the light of God's love.

Book excerpt: As night falls on December 13, 1862, bitter winds sweep the battlefield of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Patrick O'Hanrahan, a Union soldier, lies wounded, surrounded by his dead and dying comrades. With more than two years of war ahead of him, Patrick doesn't know if his life will last even two more minutes. He also doesn't see the moral conflict he will eventually be forced to deal with after meeting Lou Ann Sommers, though he still plans to marry his hometown sweetheart, Beth Wheeler. Before the war is over, his encounter with Nathan, a slave, will profoundly affect his understanding of the cause for which he fights. And Patrick is stunned when he comes face-to-face in battle with his boyhood friend, Joshua Halperin, a Confederate captain, in a farmer's wheat field near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. One Nation Under God illuminates the war's bloody contests through the eyes of four young people, traumatized by the fracturing impact of the Civil War. As they struggle to survive violence and upheaval, compounded by fear, suspicion, loneliness, and lost love, their hearts and minds become entwined and forever changed. Their courage to stand for their beliefs and risk everything reflects the nobility of our forefathers, who forever reshaped our great United States of America.

Book excerpt: In life, have we ever been catapulted to a comfortable stratosphere? And suddenly, one day, we can’t believe we’ve been dropped in the middle of nowhere. That is what happened in the complex lives of the two main characters, Pastor David Wyan and his wife, Debora Wyan. The unimaginable lurked around every corner, waiting to trip them up and totally destroy them. Incredible demands were forced in their lives. How did they manage to stay sane in their little Christian community? Buried beneath these pages, there is an army of hidden, dark secrets. Some of them leave our thoughts and imaginations at the edge of steep, rocky cliffs. And other secrets drive us to a place of stolen identity. Nevertheless, whenever we love something, we fight incredibly hard to take back our control and what is rightfully ours. This story is provocative, alluring, riveting, heart-wrenching, and enthralling.

Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Barbara Wood: An exciting thriller teeming with adventure and suspense about two sisters caught in a deadly international game. It's been four years since Lydia Harris last spoke to her elder sister, Adele. When Adele telephones from Rome and interrupts Lydia's work as a nurse at the Santa Monica Emergency Hospital, she's more than a little surprised—and curious. Adele explains that she sent a parcel to Lydia, and after Lydia receives it, she must come to Rome at once. Disturbed by her sister's cryptic message, Lydia is further puzzled when the parcel arrives containing a beautiful Egyptian gaming piece in the form of a jackal. When Lydia's apartment is suddenly burglarized, she's astonished that the only thing stolen is the wrapping paper in which the jackal was mailed. Deeply concerned about her sister's fate, Lydia determines to track her down, flying first to Rome and then to Cairo. But the deeper she becomes involved in her search, the further she leaves behind the comfortable world of her hospital and the undeclared love of a handsome doctor. Drawn into a lethal battle of wits, Lydia confronts murder, mysterious strangers, and death threats. But in a final confrontation in the Valley of the Kings, Lydia just might face her worst nightmare.

Abetted by states who think that outsiders can better use the lands than the people who have lived there for centuries, outside commercial interests have displaced indigenous dwellers from pastoral territories. This volume presents case studies from Eastern Africa, based on long-term field research, that vividly illustrate the struggles and strategies of those who face dispossession and also discredit ideological false modernist tropes like ‘backwardness’ and ‘primitiveness’.

Experience how to let your faith be bigger than your fear.
