Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 1: January-June, 1851 The commencement of this New Series suggests the hope that the Philosophical Magazine may at this period receive an accession to the number of its supporters. Those of its Editors who have stood beside it for half a century, and made it their endeavour that it should be honestly, independently and usefully conducted, may be permitted, on this occasion, to urge how much the means of giving additional interest and value to the Journal must depend upon the support afforded to them; in the hope that many lovers of science who are not already subscribers may take this opportunity of adding to the number of those by whose encouragement alone the work has been upheld. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin, Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 25: New and United Series of the Philosophical Magazine, Annals of Philosophy, and Journal of Science; July-December, 1844 Chlorine gas, which has been exposed to the daylight or to sunshine, possesses qualities which are not possessed by chlorine which has been made in the dark. This is shown by the circumstance, that chlorine which has been exposed to the sunshine has obtained from that exposure the property of speedily uniting with hydrogen gas; a property not possessed by chlorine which has been made and kept in the dark. This quality gained by the chlorine arises from its having absorbed tithonic rays corresponding in refrangibility to the indigo. It is not a transient, but apparently a permanent property, the rays so absorbed becoming latent, and the effect lasting for an unknown period of time. The facts which I shall proceed to describe will be interesting to chemists, because they plainly lead us to suspect that the descriptions we have of the properties of all elementary and compound bodies are either inaccurate or confused. These properties are such as bodies exhibit after they have been exposed to the light; we still require to know what are the properties they possess before exposure to such influences. Natural philosophers will also find an interest in these phenomena, for they finally establish for the tithonic rays two important facts, - 1st, that those rays are absorbed by ponderable bodies; and 2nd, that they become latent after the manner of heat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 38: Fifth Series; July-December, 1894 Wien 187 1 The theoretical coefficient also varies as the power of the absolute temperature, but it has been shown by Loschmidt and Obermayer (site. Alcad. Wien, lxi., lxii., lxxv., lxxxi., lxxxv., lxxxvii., in experiments on several pairs of gases, that their coefficients of diffusion vary more rapidly with temperature than according to the theoretical law. They found empirically that the coefficients vary as powers of the temperature, ranging from to 2 instead of the of the theory of forceless molecules. Here is where the effect of molecular force comes in, just as in the case of viscosity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 4: July-December, 1877 The line of demarcation between the principal event, whose laws are to be determined, and the disturbances, here becomes still more undefined. And where we are still groping after a law of the phenomena (as in the case of meteorology) it is unknown what is to be classed as the principal event and what as disturbances. It is like looking at a series of irregular waves with ripples of various sizes on their surface until some law in the formation of the waves is discovered, it is unknown how large a ripple may be neglected in the discovery of that law. Nevertheless the only chance of discovery seems to be to neglect the ripples by some arbitrary rule, and to ex amine the main features of the series of waves.
