Book excerpt: Excerpt from Th Living Plant: A Description and Interpretation of Its Functions and Structure The very first words I would write in this book are addressed to my botanical colleagues, whom I wish to inform that the work is not intended for them. In this statement I am by no means invoking immunity from scientific criticism, but emphasizing the aim of the book. It is not designed as a digest of our present scientific knowledge of plant physiology for the use of experts in that subject, but, in conformity with the aim of the series of which it is a part, it seeks to present to all who have interest to learn an accurate and vivid conception of the principal things in plant life. I was once myself such a learner, and I have tried to write such a book as I would then have delighted to read. It is, in a word, an attempt at that literature of interpretation which was foreshadowed by Francis Bacon in the fine passage that stands on its dedicatory page. This aim will explain peculiarities of the work not otherwise obvious. Thus, I have been at more pains to be clear than to be brief, assuming on the part of my reader no great knowledge of the subject, but a large willingness to take trouble to learn; and as I have tried to discuss every process with fulness enough to elucidate its nature, my book has wandered through a leisurely course to a length quite shockingly great. But I comfort myself with the reflection that the plan and the subject hardly permit other treatment; for a royal road to a real understanding of plant phenomena does neither exist nor can it be built.

Each one of the 100 “recipes” specifies the type and quantity of plants needed; clearly numbered instructions detail each step; and 400 photographs show how to place every stem. Traditional pots and plant containers are used, but so are less conventional vehicles and methods, like shutters and planting under glass. A basic how-to chapter provides planting techniques, a tools and materials list, sourcing and plant care information, and expert advice.

Book excerpt: Who would imagine that plants can become master teachers of a radical new way of seeing and interacting with the world? Plants are dynamic and resilient, living in intimate connection with their environment. This book presents an organic way of knowing modeled after the way plants live. When we slow down, turn our attention to plants, study them carefully, and consciously internalize the way they live, a transformation begins. Our thinking becomes more fluid and dynamic; we realize how we are embedded in the world; we become sensitive and responsive to the contexts we meet; and we learn to thrive within a changing world. These are the qualities our culture needs in order to develop a more sustainable, life-supporting relation to our environment. While it is easy to talk about new paradigms and to critique our current state of affairs, it is not so easy to move beyond the status quo. That’s why this book is crafted as a practical guide to developing a life-infused way of interacting with the world.

Crandall challenges the pervasive assertion that you need to eat meat to grow big and strong with the highest quality and most up-to-date science available. Viewing the human body as a machine, he uses his training as an engineer to dissect common misconceptions surrounding the controversial nutritional landscape with ease. Within this text is a bold new dietary approach for strength athletes. Bradie asserts that a diet featuring plants could potentially be more conducive to building strength and mass than a diet featuring animal products. He breaks down the science and helps explain why across professional athletics, more and more elite athletes are adopting plant-based diets.

There may be few answers in PAINT THE LIVING, PLANT THE DEAD - indeed the whole thing is a bit absurd - but sometimes asking the questions can be enough. What is the point of life? Why is my hair gray? Where are my keys? These poems won't answer these questions, but you'll at least have something to read on your way to wherever you end up.

The Plant Messiah follows Carlos' dreams and disappointments; from his days as a school boy in the death throes of General Franco's Fascist dictatorship, to his advent as The Plant Messiah at the forefront of conservation, backed by the reputation and resources of The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and enthused by the potential that lies beyond. The book discloses for the first time the details behind his 'codebreaking' exploits and the secret stories behind his work; his genius, lateral thinking and steadfast belief that everything is possible.
