Excerpt: ... delegate to congress, and he was an acting member of that body, Mr. Carroll still retained his seat in that convention, and all the time he could be spared from the former, he devoted to the business of the latter, by his personal attendance. In this year he was elected a member of the convention for framing a constitution of government for the newly formed independent state of Maryland; and after it was adopted, he was in the same year, chosen a member of the state senate. Thus the honors of the state were bestowed on him bounteously by a grateful people, who now began to realize the mag. nitude of the services he had rendered them. Early in 1777, he was re-appointed to a seat in the congress, where his services had been so truly patriotic and beneficial; and he continued to hold his seat until 1778, when he relinquished it. He was again chosen to the senate of Maryland in 1781; and after the federal government was established by an adoption of the new constitution of the United States, in 1788, in the month of December he was appointed a member of the first United States senate, for the state of Maryland. At the balloting for classing the senators, which look place at the first session of the first congress, Mr. Carroll fell into the first class; and his term of service closed at the end of the first two years. In May, 1791, he was chosen into the senate of Maryland. Of this body he continued a member, until 1801, at which time he was left out by a revolution of the parties in the state. The venerated emigrants who first planted America, ana .most of their distinguished successors who laid the foundation of our civil liberty, have found a resting place in the peaceful grave. But the virtues which adorned both these generations; their patience in days of suffering; the courage and patriotic zeal with which they asserted their rights; and the wisdom they displayed in laying the foundations of our government; will be held in lasting remembrance. It has, indeed, been said, that the settlement of America, and the history of her revolution, are becoming "a trite theme." The remark is not founded in truth. Too well does the present generation appreciate the excellence of those men, who guided the destinies of our country in days of bitter trial; too well does it estimate the glorious events, which have exalted these United States to their present elevation, ever to be weary of the pages which shall record the virtues of the one, and the interesting character of the other. The minuter portions of our history, and the humbler men who have acted a part therein, must, perhaps, pass into oblivion.
