Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of Celebrated Travelers, Vol. 3 of 3 This enterprising and distinguished traveller was born on the 10th of September, 1771, at Fowlshiels, a farm occupied by his father on the banks of the Yarrow, near Selkirk. In common with the greater number of the sons of Scottish yeomen, Mungo Park, notwithstanding that the number of his brothers and sisters amounted to no less than thirteen, received a respectable education, and at the age of fifteen was bound apprentice to a surgeon at Selkirk. At the close of this apprenticeship, in 1789, Park continued his medical studies at the university of Edinburgh, where, though nothing remarkable is recorded of him, he seems to have applied with great assiduity to his professional studies. His summer vacations, during one of which he made a tour to the Highlands, were devoted to botany. Having completed his education, Park removed to London in search of professional employment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of Celebrated Travellers, Vol. 2 of 3 The death Of his father, which took place in 1677, delivered him from theology and the church. He was now entire master of his time; and, in order the more completely to gratify his inclinations, made a tour through the mountains of Dauphiny and Savoy, where he collected a great number of fine plants, which formed the nucleus of his herbarium. This journey increasing instead of gratifying his cu riosity, and probably adding fresh vigour to his naturally robust frame, while it at the same time enhanced his gayety, was merely the prelude to others more adventurous and extensive. In 1769 he set out from Aix for Montpellier, where, besides improving himself in his anatomical and medical studies, he enjoyed all the. Advantages which the rich botanical garden created by Henry IV. Could afford an enlightened botanist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of Celebrated Travellers, Vol. 1 Dr. Southey, speaking of the works of travellers, very justly remarks, that "of such books we cannot have too many!" and adds with equal truth, that "because they contribute to the instruction of the learned, their reputation suffers no diminution by the course of time, but that age rather enhances their value." Every man, indeed, whose comprehensive mind enables him to sympathize with human nature under all its various aspects, and to detect - through the endless disguises superinduced by strange religions, policies, manners, or climate - passions, weaknesses, and virtues akin to his own, must peruse the relations of veracious travellers with peculiar satisfaction and delight. But there is another point of view in which the labours of this class of writers may be contemplated with advantage. Having made use of them as a species of telescope, for bringing remote scenes near our intellectual eye, it may, perhaps, be of considerable utility to observe the effect of so many dissimilar and unusual objects, as necessarily present themselves to travellers, upon the mind, character, and happiness of the individuals who beheld them. This, in fact, is the business of the biographer; and it is what I have endeavoured to perform, to the best of my abilities, in the following "Lives." Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the World's Great Travellers, Vol. 3 This mystifying prelude may seem rather disheartening to the stranger, primed with rational curiosity to under stand, as well as see, this unwieldy London. He will find, however, his curiosity whetted, deepened, elevated, in pro portion as he takes with him a moderate grounding in the historical associations of the old city. This easily acquired information will prove to be a key that will unlock hidden places holding bunches of other keys, so that everywhere one may turn, the streets, buildings, and monuments recite their own fascinating stories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of Celebrated Travellers, Vol. 2 of 3 Tournefort was born at Aix, in Provence, on the 5th of June, 1656. He received the first rudiments of his education at the Jesuits' College of that city; where manifestations of his passion for botany, to the gratification of which he devoted the whole of his life, appeared at a very early age. As soon as he beheld plants, says Fontenelle, he felt himself a botanist. He desired to learn their names; he carefully observed their differences, and sometimes absented himself from his class in order to botanize in the country, preferring nature to the language of the ancient Romans, which at that time was regarded as the principal object of education.
