Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working alone, to start with, I filled three pages of legal pads with two columns per page with notes on events in my life. The title of the book came from the incessant questioning by my daughters for stories of my life, and of the lives of those near and dear to me. In retirement since 1988, my wife and I have spent the winters in a deluxe country club complex in Florida and our summers on our 11-acre farm in Connecticut. I played golf, spent afternoons in the condominium pool, and, following advice given to me by my dad's brother, a doctor, I have a three-ounce martini every night to keep the blood thin and the heart relaxed.

They've even got chubby pets and zany monster sidekicks! They're chibis! Excruciatingly cute, highly stylized, and beloved in all manga genres (fantasy, magical girls, shounen, anthro, sci-fi-, and more), without them, manga would barely exist. And now you can learn, step by step, how to draw virtually every chibi out there, how to "chibify" ordinary manga characters—and how to invent your very own designs! Covering facial expressions, those iconic manga eyes, costumes, character interaction, and story settings, Manga for the Beginner Chibis has it all.

The journey was a publicity stunt creating media opportunities for paediatric healthcare service providers. And, of course, Chris relished the opportunity to taste his very first Guinness at the source. But was the trip all the way to Dublin worth it? Battling ill health and broken friendships this rollercoaster ride eventually cost Chris his eyesight. He relays the story of his adventures on the road, medical trauma and recovery with passion and good humour. After his devastating prognosis as a blind man, Chris thought that sight loss would cause his adventures to end but it has rather ignited his curiosity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When she retired, Carole Howard took a surprising – some might call it radical – giant step out of her comfort zone. With little idea of what to expect, she overcame her usual risk-aversion and volunteered with her husband to be management consultants for a non-profit in Senegal, West Africa. The experience was so life-affirming they did it again the following year in Uganda. And then three more times after that, in Namibia, Thailand, and Ghana, each time for two months. Her adventure was simultaneously an outward journey (of miles and cultures) and an inward journey (of small victories and self-discovery). While she knew she couldn’t save the world, she found that doing one thing for one person or organization in one place is the next best thing. TALES OF A SILVER-HAIRED VOLUNTEER is a personal memoir that is inspiring, written with a light (sometimes hilarious) touch. She now knows the answers to the questions she posed above...... and a whole lot more.

Book excerpt: When millionaire ad executive Rich Larson flees New York for the Catskills, he seeks the kind of happiness derived from a rod, reel, and a bucket of worms. But after he assumes a new identity as Johnny Paycash, a singer-songwriter who regularly performs at the Hooten Holler Taproom, he is inexplicably framed as a drug-dealing terrorist by a crooked, cross-dressing cop. After his fingerprints are found on a bag of cocaine, Johnny is arrested, thrown in the slammer, and forced to rely on Fat Schanz, his gambling-addicted ex-convict lawyer, to bail him out. If not for his girlfriend, Sugarfoot, a vivacious farm girl who sings like an angel and shoots like Annie Oakley, Johnny might go insane the exact defense his lawyer is planning on his behalf. As Johnny stands in court in front of Judge Perkins, he receives raucous support from the unruly regulars of the Hooten Holler Taproom including Big Al, a house painter who looks like Elvis, and Tommy Dick, a womanizing honky-tonk piano man. As mayhem surrounds the trial, a mysterious ghostwriting gossip columnist chronicles the adventures and leads the entire oddball group to a surprise unveiling of the truth about a kidnapping, a murder, and quite possibly a miracle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parents and families, teachers and community leaders have a serious responsibility for the children God has placed in their care. Some children do OK without the influence of adults, but most dont. Instead, many of them are scarred without parental guidance and adult supervision. As a result theyre rootless, struggling through a maze heading for a life of crime. Often they are friend-less and loners, rootless and hopeless, feeling dumb and worthless, with low self-esteem a sure road to crime. From Rags. . .to Free Room and Board is the story about a young boy, abandoned by his biological father before birth, sexually abused by a pedophile in his teens, committed crimes along the way, an alcoholic early on as he wandered through a wilderness maze. Finally, he committed a horrendous murder triggered by an attempted homosexual attack, and is presently serving an indeterminate life sentence. Sad! In his story one can feel prison life from the inside. At the age of 64, he has spent half his life in the California Prison System. Though one sees the path put him there, why is he still there after getting a parole that was withdrawn, and has had 17 denials by the Parole Boards since? The reader can see inside the judicial system regarding this, as well as: Can one ever pay for taking a life? Is his being locked up indefinitely the only way? Can anyone know if he can make it outside? Has his human rights been violated? Is rehabilitation possible? Have parole hearings verified whether Donn has been rehabilitated? Is he past due for release? Here are insights to these and many other questions. It is urgent that parents and teachers, churches and youth leaders, be concerned with a host of struggling youth in lifes maze. Officials must re-examine incarceration and rehabilitation in light of vastly overcrowded prisons and huge escalating costs of keeping prisoners locked up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this most recent sequel to his award-winning memoir, "Mother and Me—Escape from Warsaw 1939," Julian Padowicz presents the adult years of his continuing struggle to become his own person, in the face of his domineering mother's responses to the personal challenges created by the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Three previous memoirs covered his childhood and adolescence as Julian and his courageous and creative mother struggle to survive WWII and escape to America—in this one, adult Julian, educated now in the United States, struggles to free himself of the suffocating pall his celebrated but driven and self-centered mother has laid over his life. Growing up in a venerable boarding school and the homes of relatives, while his mother pursues social objectives, Julian searches for companionship, love, and a career, achieving them eventually, after a series of missteps and misadventures.
