This slang dictionary gathers the most amusing and useful terms from English history and helpfully presents them to be used in the conversations of our modern day. Originally published in 1785, the Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue was one of the first lexicons of English slang, compiled by a militia captain who collected the terms he overheard on his late-night excursions to London's slums, dockyards, and taverns. Now the legacy lives on in this colorful pocket dictionary. • Learn the origin of phrases like "birthday suit" and discover slang lost to time. • An unexpected marriage of lowbrow humor and highbrow wit Discover long lost antique slang and curse words and learn how to incorporate them into modern conversation. A Pocket Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue is perfect for enlivening contemporary conversation with historical phrases; it includes a topical list of words for money, drunkenness, the amorous congress, male and female naughty bits, and so on. • A funny book for wordplay, language, swearing, and insult fans, as well as fans of British humor and culture • Perfect for those who loved How to Speak Brit: The Quintessential Guide to the King's English, Cockney Slang, and Other Flummoxing British Phrases by Christopher J. Book excerpt: With its unparalleled coverage of English slang of all types (from 18th-century cant to contemporary gay slang), and its uncluttered editorial apparatus, Cassell's Dictionary of Slang was warmly received when its first edition appeared in 1998. 'Brilliant.' said Mark Lawson on BBC2's The Late Review; 'This is a terrific piece of work - learned, entertaining, funny, stimulating' said Jonathan Meades in The Evening Standard. But now the world's best single-volume dictionary of English slang is about to get even better. Jonathon Green has spent the last seven years on a vast project: to research in depth the English slang vocabulary and to hunt down and record written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible. This has entailed trawling through more than 4000 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and many newspapers and magazines - for relevant material. The research has thrown up some fascinating results

Book excerpt: Here is a wonderful Baedeker to down-and-dirty politics--more than six hundred slang terms straight from the smoke-filled rooms of American political speech. Hatchet Jobs and Hardball: The Oxford Dictionary of American Political Slang illuminates a rich and colorful segment of our language. Readers will find informative entries on slang terms such as Beltway bandit and boondoggle, angry white male and leg treasurer, juice bill and Joe Citizen, banana superpower and the Big Fix. We find not only the meaning and history of familiar terms such as gerrymander, but also of lesser-known terms such as cracking (splitting a bloc of like-minded voters by redistricting) and fair-fight district (which refers to areas redistricted to favor no political party). Each entry includes the definition of the word, its historical background, and illuminating citations, some going back more than 200 years. (We learn, for instance, that a term as seemingly current as political football actually dates back to before the Civil War.) Selected entries will have extended encyclopedic notes. The book also features sidebar essays on topics such as political words in Blogistan; a short history of "big cheese"; all about chads and the 2000 election; the suffix "-gate" and all the related Watergate terms; and the naming of legislation. Political junkies, policy wonks, journalists, and word lovers will find this book addictive reading as well as a reliable guide to one of the more colorful corners of American English.

Often we know what they mean, but do we know where they originated?Well in this book, you are about to find out!For example, when we want to wish someone a good nights sleep, people often say, "Night night, sleep tight." In order to make the bed firmer and more comfortable, people would have to pull on the ropes to tighten the mattress and hence the saying came about. This delightful book is full of well known sayings, beautifully matched with fun and original illustrations, which will make you laugh out loud. Part of the fun is seeing whether you can guess the saying just from looking at the picture. This book will appeal to lovers of trivia, history and language. It makes the perfect little gift for the someone that has everything! Keep it in on the coffee table and provide a little bit of amusement for all!Learn a little trivia, keep history alive.

Book excerpt: 'Evening all'- a police saying invented by television, spoken by the archetypal British policeman, P.C. George Dixon. But it's not in this book, because it isn't real. Instead you'll find 'Sarbut' inside? Is that a 'who' or a 'what'? And what are 'Appointments', because you won't find them in a diary. Why would you call someone 'Bungalow'? And who are the 'Donkey Wallopers'? What does 'All correct sir' mean, and is 'Carry on sir' straight out of a film? Find the answers in this light-hearted little book, which is essential 'Brummie' reading and lifts the lid on the strange phenomena of 'police humour'. This book explores more than five hundred phrases, abbreviations and nicknames, spoken by the police in the West Midlands over many decades. The nature of policing, with its adherence to rules and regulations, as well as procedures and the rule of law, implies that formality must be the norm. These principles can be evidenced no more clearly than by the tenets of the role of a police officer, which are enshrined within the 'DNA' of every member on joining the service, and defined as follows:'A Constable is a citizen, locally appointed, but having authority under the Crown, for the protection of life and property, the maintenance of order, the prevention and detection of crime and the prosecution of offenders against the Peace.' Notwithstanding the formalities that must be adhered to when working in an operational environment, the police service, in keeping with many other occupations, has developed its own sub-language and culture, which has been transformed and added to over the decades. The authors of this little book were born in Birmingham, and worked in the police in the City and wider West Midlands during their extensive service spanning more than seventy years. Having already explored the use of so-called 'Brummie' slang words in a previous book, 'Ta-ra-a-Bit, Our Kid', they have now taken a light-hearted look at the routine use of slang, abbreviations and nicknames in the police service in the West Midlands, from the days before 'political correctness' to the present day, assisted by the memories of more than fifty colleagues, both serving and retired.'Black Humour' is a facet of police culture and in truth it is also one of the many 'coping mechanisms' which enable human beings to function in a job which can be hugely stressful, often unpredictable and violent, as well as routinely challenging. Many of the slang phrases embrace an element of 'darkness' but rarely are, or were intended to be, malicious or negative. In an environment where most give 'as good as they get' the word 'banter' is quite commonly heard. Nowadays some of the content would be deemed culturally unacceptable, but the book represents a piece of social history, and the language represents the culture of its time. As such the authors did not feel that it would be right to apply today's values to the past. For simplicity, this collection of over five hundred phrases and abbreviations is presented in alphabetical order, using of course the phonetic alphabet, still routinely employed by officers and police staff to this day.Above all the book demonstrates that even police officers have a great but 'different' sense of humour!

This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the amusement of the pundits and the regret of the electorate, our modern political jargon has become even more brazenly two-faced and obfuscatory than ever. Where once we had Muckrakers, now we have Bed-Wetters. Where Blue Dogs once slept peaceably in the sun, Attack Dogs now roam the land. During election season--a near constant these days--the coded rhetoric of candidates and their spin doctors, and the deliberately meaningless but toxic semiotics of the wing nuts and backbenchers, reach near-Orwellian levels of self-satisfaction, vitriol, and deceit. The average NPR or talk radio listener, MSNBC or Fox News viewer, or blameless New York Times or Wall Street Journal reader is likely to be perplexed, nonplussed, and lulled into a state of apathetic resignation and civic somnolence by the rapid-fire incomprehensibility of political pronouncement and commentary--which is, frankly, putting us exactly where the pundits want us. Dog Whistles, Walk-Backs, and Washington Handshakes is a tonic and a corrective. It is a reference and field guide to the language of politics by two veteran observers that not only defines terms and phrases but also explains their history and etymology, describes who uses them against whom, and why, and reveals the most telling, infamous, amusing, and shocking examples of their recent use. It is a handbook of lexicography for the Wonkette and This Town generation, a sleeker, more modern Safire's Political Dictionary, and a concise, pointed, bipartisan guide to the lies, obfuscations, and helical constructions of modern American political language, as practiced by real-life versions of the characters on House of Cards.
