Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Movement in France During the Nineteenth Century Then, we have Romanticism with its ascendant ego and incurable melancholy; more general in its admittance of the details of reality and always universal in its conception of the ideal; liberal in the application of formulas as well as spiritual and sentimental in its Christianity. Finally, we have Realism with its triumphant ego and enervating Pessimism; as exclusive in its acceptance of the real as it is arrogant in its suppression of the ideal; no less scrupulous in its superstition for form than absolute and decadent in its negation of truths which do not admit of empirical verification. Here, as M. Pellissier shows, Classicism is inspired by Greco-Latin antiquity; Romanticism turns to mediaeval art; Realism confines itself to the data of the present. Classicism, aiming at general truth, expresses the philosophical spirit; Romanticism, pursuing interior truth, is pervaded by artistic and religious sentiment; Realism, seeking only exterior truth, is the essence of the scientific spirit. Humanity only was admitted by ancient and Classic art. The nineteenth century, however, has given nature full aesthetic expression, first in a more subjective, later in a more objective form. Indeed, the constant advance of nature in modern art is one of the chief epoch marks of our century. Generally speaking, with Classicism it is the triumph of art over nature; Romanticism aims to conciliate art and nature; with Realism it is the triumph of nature over art. There is no purely objective art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lucid and innovative volume, three distinguished scholars trace this history of French literature from its beginnings to the present day. From the oral, unstable anonymous works of the early Middle Ages via the emergence of a print culture in the Renaissance, through to the attempted codification of genres and styles in the nineteenth century and the resourceful experimentation of the twentieth, A Short History of French Literature demonstrates the world importance of French literature, and the extraordinary richness of its range. The three main parts of the volume cover the Middle Ages, the Early Modern period, and the Modern period, and offer wide-ranging, personal, and detailed coverage of major writers and movements. Writing for the interested general reader as much as for students, the authors range expertly between authors and their works, historical events, and literary movements, offering as a whole an authoritative and innovative account of the history of French literature.

Book excerpt: The cult of decadence is usually dismissed as an eccentricity of French literature, a final twitter of Romantic neurosis, convulsing the lunatic fringe of letters during the last third of the nineteenth century. However, the nineteenth century's preoccupation with decadence provides us with a key to the secret places of its thought, to all the obscure passages and backstairs behind the triumphant façade. Between 1814 and 1914, there was no sense of disaster, no tragic sense. Civilization had become a habit, a side product of political constitutions and applied science. History was viewed pragmatically: of what use were such traditional symbols as throne and altar? Both are essentially propitiatory, evidence of man's uneasy knowledge that power is dangerous and destiny implacable. And both seemed anachronisms in a world where (it was thought) human reason had solved or would solve all the old problems. The theory of decadence is very largely a protest against this comfortable belief. Had the decadents not written, we should hardly suspect that the nineteenth century suffered from the same doubts and hesitations as all other ages, before and since.

Book excerpt: In this innovative study, the author carves out a new field, a sociology of literature in which he offers insightful commentary about the nexus of literature and society. Calling on history, sociology, and psychology as well as literature as points of reference, Allan Pasco examines the conceptual shift in the ideal of love in eighteenth-century France. Pasco explores the radical, though gradual, changes that occurred during the Enlightenment with respect to how the emotion of love was viewed. Earlier, love had been subordinate to the demands of family, king, and deity; passion was dangerous, and to be avoided. But over time, individual happiness became the "greatest good," and passion the measure of love. Authors as diverse as Marivaux, Marmontel, Rousseau, Baculard d'Arnaud, Pigault-Lebrun and Madame de Staël make it clear that the ideal of rapturous love did not live up to its billing: it did not last, and it brought destructive fantasies, an epidemic of disease, the "scourge" of divorce, and considerable anguish. Still, as Pasco points out, passion became and remained the ideal, and the Romantics were left to plumb its nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Louis XVIII returned to the throne in 1814, and again in 1815, France embarked upon a period of uneasy cohabitation between the old and the new. The writers of the age, who included Chateaubriand, Stendhal, Balzac, and Mme de Duras, agreed that they lived at a historical turning point, a transitional moment whose outcome, though still uncertain, would transform the French way of life—beginning with the French way of love. The literary works of the Bourbon Restoration ceaselessly return to the themes of love, sex, and marriage, partly as vital cultural questions in their own right, but also as a means of critiquing the deficiencies of past regimes, negotiating the politics of the present, and imagining the shape of the political future. In the literature of the Restoration, love and politics become entwined in a mutually metaphorical embrace. The Amorous Restoration, the first book in English devoted to literary and cultural life under the last Bourbon kings, considers this relationship in all its richness and many contradictions. Long neglected as a drab historical backwater, the Restoration emerges here as a vibrant era, one rife with sharp cultural and political disagreements, and possessed of an especially refined sense of allusion, discretion, and even humour. Drawing on literature, journalism, political writing, life writing, and gossip, The Amorous Restoration vividly recreates the erotic sensibilities of a pivotal moment in the transition from an amorous old regime to erotic—and political—modernity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Protest in Old French Literature The present study is an effort to discover the problems of social justice and personal liberty that interested the more thoughtful writers of medieval France. The intent has been to submit each author's views in his own words, with as little as may be of twentieth century interpretation. As the passages quoted, however, comprise less than a fiftieth part of the material originally selected for presentation, it will be seen that much abridgment has been necessary; but since the excluded portions are mere reiterations of the thought, their omission in no degree changes the purport of any passage. Except in the case of a few obvious errors, the textual reading of the editions cited has been followed. In the matter of the English rendering, the controlling principle has been regard for the convenience of the English reader. On the one hand, literal exactness has been sacrificed whenever the meaning of the original has thereby become clearer; on the other hand, no attempt has been made to smooth away the roughness of the original when a literal version could convey the sense. Like all other students of Romance Philology at Columbia University, the writer of this study has found inspiration in the accurate scholarship and generous assistance of Prof. H. A. Todd. The effort to win the high prize of his approval has at least made the present work less unworthy than it would otherwise have been. "Les Miserables", "The Lady of the Camelias" and "The Three Musketeers", "Balzac" and "Jules Verne" live in the popular consciousness as enduring human documents and cultural icons. Yet, the French nineteenth century was even more dynamic than the stereotype suggests. This exciting new introduction takes the literature of the period both as a window on past and present mindsets and as an object of fascination in its own right. Beginning with history, the century's biggest problem and potential, it looks at narrative responses to historical, political and social experience, before devoting central chapters to poetry, drama and novels - all genres the century radically reinvented. It then explores numerous modernities, ways nineteenth-century writing and mentalities look forward to our own, before turning to marginalities - subjects and voices the canon traditionally forgot. No genre was left unchanged by the nineteenth century. This book will help to discover them anew.
