Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary and Theological Review, 1835, Vol. 2 Among those interiour grounds of dependence for the success of the Gospel, Learning must be named as the first and most conspicuous. When the church emerged from the ignorance and corruption of the dark ages, and caught a glimpse of the light and glory of the Gospel in contrast with the reigning and universal superstition, im osture and wickedness, the minds of men were roused, an the transi tion gave to eve species of knowledge a captivating power; and in re ation to the first and main object, conversion and salvation of men, assigned to human learn ing a mistaken oflice and an undue importance, which the invention of printing encouraged, and various causes have helped to perpetuate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary and Theological Review, Vol. 5 But Dr. Pond seems to forget all this when he adverts to the argument of our author on p. 114. That the vol un tary rinciple produces a spiritual war and jurisdiction out 0 the Church, which is yet to b: exercised over the Church. For, he says on pp. 412, 413, Were this as sumption founded in truth, no doubt the societies in question would be fraught with danger and mischiefs' in abundance. All those which our author has mentioned, and a great many more, mi ht reasonably be expected from them. But the assumption as no foundation in truth. It is not true in either of its parts. They are instruments, which the Church has adopted, if not created, by means of which to operate in blessing the world. They are, moreover, responsible to the Churcli, because the subsist upon the approbation and patronage of the Chur and should these at any time be withdrawn, their days would at once be numbered and tin iehed. Nor is it true that the societies under consideration are endeavouring or wishing to exercise a legislative con troul over the Church. Never was an idea conceived or uttered, more purely imaginary, more thoron hly false and unfounded than this. Legislate for the Churc l l &c. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Examiner and Theological Review, 1824, Vol. 1 Nor has tlns progress of opinion been attended with any extraordinary excitement of uncharitable feelings. Doubt bss, in common with all, who have been in a minority in religion, we have occasionally had cause to regret that we were mi?udged and misrepresented. But we think we look in vain or any other instance, in which so considerable a reformation of belief has been e 'ected with so little mutual irritation. In comparison with those, who in other times and counn-ies have engaged in similar labours, we consider our selves to havd been signally privileged in regard to the amount of' obloquy, which we have been called to endure, and the to nptations to unchristian feeling, which we have had to resist. And we have ceased, in a great measure, to dread the in uence of controversy upon an intelligent and serious community, since we have perceived, that in the course of these discussions, they have assumed a more moderate and elevated character 3 and a better mutual understanding, and greater mutual respect, have come to prevail between the adherents to opposite Opinions. Exceptions to this remark undoubtedly occur; but it is no small cause of satisfaction that, to such an extent, a good example is set by those whose example will naturally be regarded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Critic: Quarterly Theological Review and Ecclesiastical Record; July, 1834 Watson, late Secretary to the Wesleyan Missionary Society. By Thomas Jackson. London. 1834. The subject of these Memoirs certainly appears to have been a very extraordinary man. We can scarcely wonder that the Wesleyans should be proud of him. With a very feeble frame of body, and a very irregular intellectual training, he undoubtedly achieved wonders within a very short span of life; for he died at the age of fifty-two, worn down by the combined operation of constitutional malady and of incessant toil. The following is a brief sketch of his biography, collected from the volume now before us: of which volume we have only to say, that it is written in a perspicuous and tolerably unambitious style; but that, withal, it is most tremendously diffuse, and stuffed out with enormous extracts from the Missionary Reports, drawn up by the deceased in the course of his labours as Secretary to the Wesleyan Missionary Society. This, however, is a peculiarity which will, probably, do nothing to impede the circulation of the work among the members of Mr. W'atson's own communion. While his memory is yet fresh, they will hardly be weary of perusing the words of their distinguished and venerated minister. The time may, possibly, come, when a somewhat briefer narra tive may satisfy the curiosity of the religious public. It is their natural and obvious meaning. It is the sense which the laws of philology and symbols assign to them. It is consistent with all the other teachings of the sacred word. It is obnoxious to no legitimate objection whatever; and can be opposed only on the ground of false principles of inter pretation and arbitrary theory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Critic, and Quarterly Theological Review: April, 1841 In glancing at the state of negro education at this date, says Mr. Latrobe in his Official Report of his visit to our West India Colonies, as Inspector of Schools, in 1838, the past must not be overlooked: for without some knowledge of its character, it would be difficult to form a just estimate of the present. It appears evident that, previous to the emancipation in 1834, the education of the negro was carried forward in all these colonies, more or less, under every disadvantage. XVI-XIX These changes of the past are assuredly predictions for us Of the similar modifications which any analogous religious reforms must hereafter introduce into the temporal concerns Of the nations by which they may be adopted. If we alter our creed in any important particular, it will not be only in the formularies Of the Church or in books of divinity, or in the religious sentiments Of individual souls, that the result will be found In departments Of human energy apparently disconnected with religion, among the habits, feelings, efforts Of the boor and the poet, the statesman and the man Of science, the result will be marked. The little leaven of doctrine will leaven the whole lump of life's affairs. Through remote and imperceptible channels the influence will force its way, and because a man has altered his ideas of things above, he will alter his action as regards all things below.
